Excellent Guardian article linked below on Liz Truss's resignation. It’s really a pity that I can’t help the Guardian in any way, because I’m from Russia and it’s impossible to transfer even a small amount to help this resource due to European banking sanctions. 😔

British politics has always had an air of theatre about it, given its adversarial nature.
@randyjones3050
@randyjones3050 2 жыл бұрын
A big difference is that the Congress was originally envisioned as being a collegial body and not adversarial. That's why the House and Senate chambers are semi-circle shaped and not a bench design as in the U.K. Parliament. The intention was to encourage deliberative discussion rather than screaming matches between different party factions. Many of the framers of the U.S. constitution had a distaste for party politics and wanted to avoid bitter partisanship in government. Unfortunately, reality turned out much different than the original vision. However, that original seed of collegiality is still baked into the culture of the Congress which is why their debates are generally much more restrained than debates in governments with parliamentary systems.

All Members of Parliament know the Speaker's name. It's parliamentary protocol that they have to refer to him as Mr. Speaker. Also, by rule, the leaders debating cannot speak to each other directly. As such, they have to talk to the Speaker, since he's the one controlling who gets to talk. It's archaic and batshit, I know, but it is how it is.

The government has to come in and provide more money. Now if the TfL goes bust, we lose billions. They are not workers in the sense you believe but have put us in a very tough position.
