It's an absolute steal of a sword. No one is making rapiers by sticking this close to the originals. Let's not even mention the "rapiers" churned out by Windlass at this point that usually starts at 4mm-5mm thick at the base, which is wildly laughable, as the originals most start at 8mm, even higher-end production makers like Arms & Armor usually starts at around 6-7mm thick at the base, which is better not still for the most part not thick enough, and obviously don't have enough distal taper (because there's not enough thickness to taper down from). The one rapier in the Royal Armouries Collection's next batch might change that by being the only other product rapier that feels like a proper rapier, but there's still a while before it's released, and it's going to be at least 700 dollars, while having blunt edges. Starting at 8mm thick at the base (a friend of mine who got this sword reported 8.5mm thick) and finally having the correct distal taper really makes this one the best option on the production market, unless one wants to spend $4,000 to get a full custom complex-hilt piece. Preliminary cutting that you did looks great. Looking forward to the full review.

I checked at KoA and it’s 7.5-2 mm distal taper, 38 mm wide, and 40 3/8ths inches. The only thing I don’t like is the handle; if I had to carry this around as a weapon in use, I would want a leather handle with a less ornate pommel. Although it is threaded, so it could be used for ending opponents rightly. 😁 I have always thought that if the world went Mad Max, this is the kind of weapon I would want (along with a glaive/naginata type thing as a main weapon). Or possibly a long handled double edged blade to carry as a secondary weapon; like the Zombie Tools version that is loosely modeled on the Zulu weapon. The rapier has reach, is quick, and would be effective against most other swords though.

I used to be skeptical about European swords. But then I took an arrow to the knee. 😁 In all seriousness though, I feel like media has done Medieval and Renaissance European arms and armor a disservice. Great initial overview lads. Glad to hear that so far it’s living up to expectations as the market has been long overdue for mid-range rapier/basket hilt representation. To get a consistent edge on this long a blade is no simple ask so I’m happy to hear that it sounds like they have it figured out for this model. Keep up the good work!
