When I worked at a large kennel in SE Texas there were a lot of dogs dropped off for training because of severe behavioral issues around the house. A lot of the dogs were a big mess upon arrival. After several days of structured living and training the dogs would change into great dogs. After several weeks the owners would come to "see" how great the dogs were doing from inside the kennel office (no owner contact with the dogs.) After 6 weeks or so, owners would come to pick up their dogs and be given a very short instructional on how to use "equipment" (ecollars and such) and be sent home with their dogs. Pretty soon, most of the dogs would be back for "more training." If people don't change what they are doing at home with their dogs, the dogs can be great at a kennel or with a trainer, but revert immediately back to neurotic behavior in the chaos of home life. I love what you said about how the second the owner changes, the dogs change. Thanks for the specifics!

Love this. In particular, really appreciate hearing about how you are with your puppies inside the house while you're training them and what you do to create that structure when they're young. Thanks for all of this!

Yes! I love your no bs straight talk! I have been searching for training videos that show how to teach my pup. Your videos are helping me learn a different way to teaching so I won't have to fix any bad behavior later.

Our present dog is number 4, Tristan . The three former dogs were well trained and lived long lives. From 13-16 yrs. all rescue dogs. Tristan is our first bred, a labradoodle. Now 13 months. The only puppy training was positive training for our new puppy, which was useless although he was outstanding in behaviour. I have been training the same way our other dogs were trained plus some updating found on youtube .Totally agree with your manner of training and have learned a lot from you. Why ? Because it makes practical sense. The first week with Tristan I had to nudge him aside when he tried to push past the door. He is coming along nicely as I work with him every day and will continue for another year. The only problem is walking him on the street with other dogs about, because he wants to play with them . Some rough housing. He plays with the dog next door. Both same type of breed. He likes every dog but the problem is he is not focused on me as we walk and is also possessive of certain things. Your videos have helped me with some problems and am aware of mistakes I have made. Thank you so much for your videos as they have helped to make corrections. Keep up the good work Larry and thank you so much for your generosity of information. Oh yes, we used a crate for the first 9 months and he has never destroyed anything as well as good behaviour in the house. He use to escaped through the front door but now waits for permission. He holds his tail high and is a happy dog.

I used to believe it was absolutely ridiculous to claim that having dogs on furniture or in beds is harmful or an display of dominance. And I used to believe that crating dogs wasn't helpful to their behavior. While I can see where people think it's dominating (cause you're allowing your dog to control something you could be controlling), I definitely see how it helps the dogs out. My dogs know not to run through an open door ever. And I've begun to implement keeping them off furniture. Even telling them to stay out the kitchen helps. They no longer feel the need to resource guard food that's being cooked or popcorn on the sofa so it helps stop (yes stop) food guarding aggression. Being off the couch prevents annoying barking up at the window. For some reason one of my full grown adult dogs has the habit of going poop inside at night (even 1 hour after he went outside), so crating him stops that. They love the crate with training. Having structure within the home just seems to almost magically stop annoying unwanted behaviors as well as unnecessary scuffles between them that they had before. You're like my favorite trainer and you've helped my dogs out so much. Everything's clear with you. My dogs are also learning to attain off leash freedom through fun e collar training because of you, so thank you.

No way do my dogs go through a door first. Great advice . As Service dogs I must have one on the bed. Like you I've trained dogs for decades.

when they are in the crate, do you ever put a kong in there if you are away for a few hours? what about a chew toy? or, are they in there with nothing else in there with them?

Re free feeding: what about when you work long hours? You have no choice but to leave food out for them.
