"Personality" is a great song and was one of the biggest hits of the early rock and roll era; it went all the way to #2 on the Billboard Hot 100 in 1959. Lloyd appeared twice on the Ed Sullivan show, this appearance and once in 1960 singing "I Only Have Eyes for You". Thank you so much for posting this footage!

Not a microphone in sight. So, even in 1959, TESS was not always live. Lloyd traveled with a 10 piece band?
@jimshulman92213 жыл бұрын
@@MostlyBrenda Sullivan regularly used off-camera boom mics, as did many shows of the era. You can occasionally see the mic intruding in the frame on Tonight Show with Johnny Carson.
@TomElvisSmith3 жыл бұрын
@@MostlyBrenda I can't vouch as to whether this particular performance is live although it would be odd if it wasn't. I can say that there is a myth going around that the performances are not live if you can't see the mics. They usually used boom microphones (overhead mics). The mics are usually not visible, but most of the performances in the '50's are live. Watch the performance of the Platters singing "Only You" on this channel. A live version very different from the recording with no visible microphones. Also, think of all the opera performances. None of those are lip-synced but you don't see any mics. Also, you rarely see a microphone with the comedians.
@TomElvisSmith3 жыл бұрын
@@jimshulman9221 Exactly right. Boom microphones were usually used for performances which is why microphones are not usually visible on the Sullivan show. I wrote my response before I saw your comment.
@MostlyBrenda3 жыл бұрын
@@TomElvisSmith It's technically impossible to overhead mike 11 band members and mix their voices with the sound of their saxes coming from 2 feet below their heads. Everybody hates it when I call lip-synch, but it's obvious. People can go believing it's live. That's fine with me! 😶

How much better can someone sing this great song? None, not like Lloyd's really good/just right voice and scales. Just so fitting to the melody and lyrics. I wish we had more Lloyd Price singers and talent these days. In rock/pop history, Lloyd was underrated, not given enough credit. Also, notice the talented, classy band with him. How about some of that these days? RIP brother Lloyd, your voice and you being known as a good guy lives on.

I absolutely love this video. It's got all the charms of the golden oldie age where people were feeling positive about the future. That said, there is one important lyric that needs to be corrected in this translation. It's the lyric text at 1:51. The line is "Honey, Love it's the truth." And it's a beautiful lyric in spirit with both this song and its message but also a positive time in our country's history.

Love this song, i discovered it only recently via KZbin, he's a great singer. This is a good but not his best rendition. Female chorus in other versions makes it sound even better as its a nice complement to his obviously strong dynamic voice. The band is great, its so rare to see such combinations today even in a sea of musicians.
