Great review Joseph. My late father bought a new 309 GE in April 1987 and kept it for about 10 years and 100k miles as you said its nothing fancy but made a pleasant enough work horse and it was very reliable
@lloydvehicleconsulting3 ай бұрын
Yes, the GE was actually much more basic than this. I am surprised how nice this car was to drive, in spite of the low specification. These 309s are probably quite underrated.

Fantastic review sir! My grandma had one of these for years. Proper workhorse.

I actually really enjoyed it, much more so than I imagined. I would have preferred a higher specification and a more powerful engine, though.

Brilliant review - I started off with this regency red in 5 door GL form with the sliding roof. One point is Pininfarina never designed the 205; only the soft top. Enjoyed this, so thanks !

Cheers. I just bought a 309 from 89' with 82k miles on it and it's absolutely amazing to drive. Such an amazing, little reliable car

That's crazy! These are surprisingly good cars, even if they seem to have very little classic status, GTi models aside.

I used to get a lift back in a 5 door 309 when I used to work for the insurance division of a well known car dealer with a yellow sticker. My colleague bought it for next to nothing and was actually in pretty good condition. A excellent review as always Sir.

Thank you, Mr Watters! We know that particular dealership group... I am beginning to think that these are surprisingly underrated cars in general.

I’ve got this engine in a ph1. If you keep on top of the tappets it’s fairly quiet. It’s a lovely car to drive, pulls well from low revs
@lloydvehicleconsulting3 ай бұрын
This car actually had a remarkably smooth engine. It has clearly been well looked after in that respect. I then tested another couple of cars with the Poissy engine last month, and the tappets were....much louder!
@frazzleface7533 ай бұрын
Sir, I find this model fascinating due to its ill-timed birth and corporate back story. I think Talbot Arizona sounds better, but I'm glad it exists, whatever its name, and this particular example is very nice indeed. Bonus points from Mr. Manning for successfully negotiating the fire extinguisher. Thank you, Joseph!
@lloydvehicleconsulting3 ай бұрын
Sir, it most certainly is an interesting back story. I do prefer these to the 205. We managed to negotiate the fire extinguisher, thank goodness...

Not seen a 309 for a very long time. I wasn’t even sure they did a 1.3 version of the 309….and I’ve just reached the point where u said they originally had a 1.1.
@lloydvehicleconsulting3 ай бұрын
Yes, the 309s are quite rare. A lot of them died donating engines and other components to 205s.
@mattw83323 ай бұрын
Very nice example. I think that these post facelift models are much nicer with the slatted grille, revised dashboard and tidier rear styling that incorporates a lower load sill. That unusual rear seat folding release mechanism was the same as found on the Chrysler/ Talbot Horizon. I also prefer the 309 over the 205, which I would consider are better value for money.

We did like this facelifted 309 very much, sir. I am looking forward to having a go in a Horizon at some point in my life having tested a Simca 1100 recently.

A lot of cars of this era were given mythical status by motoring journalists of the time based on GT versions and not bread and butter versions. As a result when it came to leasing/company car provisions I found could get a bigger better car for business use than the supposedly sexier other models.
@lloydvehicleconsulting3 ай бұрын
The 309 turned out to be much better than I was expecting. I drive an awful lot of cars, and rarely do I come away from a test drive actually seriously considering one for myself, but it happened this time, and it was on the lowest specification model too!

You say that the quality is not the best Sir but for the late 1980s early 1990s Peugeot cars had a much superior build quality to equivalent Of Fords and Vauxhalls and they were better value and drove far superior to Volkswagen Polos and Golfs. Beautiful Peugeot 309 lovely retro look.

I simply love 309s but in 3 doors they look kinda odd. Mine is a 309 Graffic which is supposed to have a 1.1 engine but the engine block was changed to 1.4 and its very fun to drive 😊 People dont really care about them which i think its a point in favour.
