Welcome to Sensible Secondhand Reviews, the series where we take a sensible secondhand car worth between £1000 and £5000 and put it through its paces in a very straightforward manner! This time, we test a 2010 Hyundai i30 1.4 Comfort (FD), which I actually sourced for a client back on 2018, and seems to be still going strong.
Be prepared for surprisingly decent interior quality, fading light on Christmas Eve, the good old Hyundai Gamma engine, good equipment levels and very little of any consequence at all. Nothing untoward, then!

Yes, hence why I sourced two of these and three Mark I Kia Cee'ds within the first couple of years of my job. They still make a lot of sense now.

Nothing not to like. Comfortable Reliable Practical Economical Quiet Good seats Like a Kia C'eed 103 bhp 1.4 Chain cam. No brainer.

Yes sir, we do like a nice original Kia Cee'd with a 1.6 petrol engine. I prefer the look of the Kia, but the Hyundai is also an excellent choice, as it is fundamentally the same car. Just depends which one you prefer, really. They are not perfect by any means, but I would not hesitate to recommend another.

Really good, no nonsense car and that 1.4 108bhp is smooth and surprisingly zippy. I once got 50mpg out of it on a long run. Bought a 1.4 Comfort new in 2008 when it was on special offer at £9,695 and it never missed a beat in 4 years and 35,000 miles. Mine had centre armrest and storage cubby on top of dashboard as standard but only 15 inch alloys that looked a bit small. Also ,the original Comfort was the base model and it came with a nasty rubber steering wheel that I had changed at the Hyundai dealer for a leather one soon after buying it. Couldn't fault it though, 5 year warranty that I never needed and one of best cars I ever owned and wish I'd kept it a bit longer. In a way I'm disappointed Hyundai have gone up market , higher tech and pricier. I like simple , no nonsense , reliable cars and this was one of them.

Yes, as this is an early 2010 Comfort, this would have been when the Classic was just introduced. As you say, the earlier Comforts were at the bottom of the range and so this would have had a few extra features for the 2010 model year. This and the Kia Cee'd of the time are always my default choice for someone with around £2,500-£3,000 to spend in terms of just getting something inexpensive for daily usage, if you can find a good one (which is becoming a bit difficult now).

Always liked the curvy styling of these i30s. This is a car that does whatever job you need it to do very well. I like that this one has a CD player. Something that Hyundai did away with several years later. I struggle with not having a CD player in a car (as a child of the early 1990s!).

These are excellent cars for the money, much as they were when I sourced this car just before I started the channel in 2018. Lots of options for music with AUX, USB and the CD player. It just gets on with the job without any fuss, really.

People say these cars are not fun. You know what is not fun? A big repair bill. I just want to listen to a podcast while possibly avoiding death as I go to work.

Great, reliable car… I still run 2011. model without issues. Still looks quite good also.

Yes, I sourced this car five years ago, and it has been pretty good, all things considered! Seems to be a running theme with Kia and Hyundai from around this time.

A very nice vehicle. Similar to what Hyundai offers in the US. Better than the current trend of truck based vehicles, I have become more prone to cars than the truck based vehicles everyone seems to be driving. Great review as well!

Yes, sort of below the Elantra, although I think the estate version was based as an Elantra in America for some reason. I sourced another almost identical one of these in 2020 as well.

I've always liked these and the Mk2 facelift Ford Focus. Trying to decide which to buy is quite challenging.

The Mark II Focus is a very good car, but you can't really go too far wrong with one of these or the related Mark I Kia Cee'd.

@@lloydvehicleconsulting I do think the Hyundai might be the better quality car but they hold their value more I believe which works against a buyer.

@@DylRicho , the Hyundais and KIas do tend to be a bit more reliable (although they do have problems), hence why they tend to have slightly higher residuals values than they used to.

A very enjoyable review Sir, a very familiar car to me as I used to own it's sister car the Cee'd Sportwagen so some of the switchgear is very familiar like the heating controls and electric window switches.

Yes, they are quite similar, aren't they? Hyundai used to have the blue backlighting, whereas Kia's backlighting was red/orange, but overall not very different, really!
