It is time for the newest instalment in that beloved cinematic automotive KZbin experience where we film practical cars that can be bought for less than £1,000 in a manner befitting of their inexpensive value! This may go horribly wrong (and frequently does)...
This time, as we test a 1995 Rover 214 SLi (R8), we get interrupted by aircraft (again), give praise to a well sorted R65 gearbox, sit on some very comfortable seats, get overcome by nostalgia, discover inadequate space for secret mission documents and drone on about very little of any importance at all. Nothing untoward, then...

We do like Rover reviews MR Lloyd, I still hold on to hope for a MK1 Rover Sterling review one day, Beige leather interior permitting.

I must admit, I'm not a Rover fan, but I do very much wish the company was still around now; I suspect the motoring world would be very slightly more interesting if they were.

They were quite a talented group of engineers, I heard some of them speak at an event last year. Not to everyone's taste of course, but having owned eight Rovers, I must quite like them.

@@lloydvehicleconsulting I think that's a large part of why I find the company's demise so sad to be honest. I do feel that given proper funding, and decent management, they could've been amongst the best cars in the world. I must admit, I do wonder if BMW felt threatened by just how capable Rover's engineering were, hence they didn't exactly do their best to make the company a success.
@lloydvehicleconsulting

@@Andy-eo3mq , yes, constantly starved of proper investment and still under the shadow of the former companies which had developed such a poor reputation, it is amazing what the Rover Group and MG Rover came up with even on a really tight budget. They could have made the quality much better with more development capital.

Lovely example of a R8 and testement to Mr Harwood for keeping it in excellent condition and I think you need another R8 Rover for the fleet sir.

Saw this fine car on the Furious Driving channel and I was amazed at how nice it was. 😍 I remember when they were launched in late 1989 and was amazed at how advanced it was over the Maestro at the time. Roy Axe and his team scored a hat trick with this. I wish my late parents would have owned one. A used R8 was on the shortlist when it was time to part with the Carlton 2.2i CD in 1997 but the damaged repaired Astra F was procured instead. A Rover would have suited them perfectly imo.
@lloydvehicleconsulting
@lloydvehicleconsulting 2 жыл бұрын
A very good car in 1989, and the main three, four and five door hatchbacks and saloons had a relatively short production run of only six years. The Maestro was a very different prospect from this, I like both of them for different reasons.

Great review, I had late 92 414sli, parents got a BRG 416sli auto ( m409wje ) in late 90s and dad loved it said it was best car he had driven driven lot of own/company cars. When I sold it in 2008 after we lost dad it still only had 55,000 miles on it and drove great, a future classic.

Joe's car is an exceptionally nice example. He has an eye for detail and much like myself he has an appreciation for original equipment and accessories. Now as I've probably mentioned previously my Grandfather owner a J registration 214 GSi and a very late K series 216SLi Auto which had the new front indicators but no grill and retained the grey bumpers. Now one notable point was the interior specification, the GSi and his replacement SLi were exactly the same in terms of equipment and both had the velour upholstery. The GSi went on to be more of a sporty model while the SLi pretty much took over from the original GSi. I do like the SEi versions that you mentioned. They did benifit from the half leather Silverstone interior and alloy wheels but did loose some of the kit that is in the SLi. I would of course be very happy with either.
@lloydvehicleconsulting
@lloydvehicleconsulting 2 жыл бұрын
Thank you, sir! Mr Harwood does indeed have a very nice collection of period accessories with his lovely R8. The K registration R8 your grandfather had would be an early first-facelift with the longer indicators, which appeared in October 1992. It would have had the Honda D-Series engine, as that was the only five door R8 available with automatic transmission. Absolutely right, the SLi was upgraded after the first facelift to be more like the early GSis, whereas the GSi did become a bit more like the eventually discontinued GTi. The SEis are very nice, but slightly less well equipped than a SLi as you mention.

in 1995 if I had had more money then this is the car that my wife and I would have bought. Powerful, sharp handling, hewn from granite and wood. Sadly, we went for a Vauxhall Astra Merit 1.4 , which was no bad thing. The Rover was outside many budgets unless purchased used at the time. Later when we had our 1999 Citroën Xsara I wanted to swap it for a 2002 MG ZS hatch in blue but my Wife didn't like the MG. To be fair, she did have good taste because the Rover R8 was a much nicer design than the later Rover 45/ MG ZS. In hindsight, I am glad that we had the boring but bombproof Vauxhall 1.4 and not the K Series. l did enjoy this immensely though, more R8 content will be gratefully received.

The HH-R 400, 45 and the MG ZS are actually quite good looking cars, particularly the 45 saloon, but the R8s do have a design purity which means they are ever so much typical of their era, and more of a classic these days, of course. I like both the Astra Mark III and the Rover 200, but you know what I prefer, sir... The 1.4 Family I engine was not very exciting, but they are very long lasting if well looked after. The Mark III Astra I filmed demonstrated this pretty well!
@seancooke7332
@seancooke7332 2 жыл бұрын
@@lloydvehicleconsulting I did not mean that the Rover 45 was not good looking, certainly not. If anything, the 45 design grew more attractive the longer the model lasted for. My Friend's 2005 45 hatchback in dark metallic red did make me very envious when it arrived, a beautiful car. Too bad that MG Rover broke his heart a few months later. My friend does have the last laugh in that that car is now quite rare and interesting.

Thanks for this video. Like I said before these were very popular in New Zealand! The Honda Concerto cousin car was also very popular here. I recall the Concerto was, in 1993 one of the last carburettor cars sold here. Its engine was Siamese Bored, whatever that meant.

Let's be frank, they were appalling. I had a 1991 214si. The head gasket leaked turning the coolant to toffee yoghurt. The build quality was poor, the sound system chewed cassette tapes up, the discs warped and the gauge binnacle blew the illumination bulbs. The final straw was when the front indicator lens parted company with the body.
@lloydvehicleconsulting
@lloydvehicleconsulting 6 ай бұрын
I have had three of these. None of them were appalling, and the build quality was much better than something like a Mark V Escort (which I have also had on No Budget Reviews) but I have had three Rovers with the 1.4 K-Series engine (nine in total), and one of them did blow its head gasket on me...

Is it the one Hyacinth Bucket's husband Richard drove? 😆 In 'Brotherly Love' a Ford Sierra plainclothes car is used by the twisted Detective Character Beck (Locran Cranitch) to take his victim (Sicko antagonist 'Shirley Temple' Harvey, played by Mark Lambert) to a hotel where they go off the roof in a murder homicide. Police cars in the final scene include a facelifted Series One Mondeo Police Car (This was a 1995 episode.) and Tactical Unit Land Rovers. Fellow antagonist Maggie played by Irish Actress I can't remember the name of drives a red mid 1980s Cavalier wagon and a Vauxhall Carlton Hearse appears in the episode.
