It is time for the newest instalment in that beloved cinematic automotive KZbin experience where we film practical cars that can be bought for less than £1,000 in a manner befitting of their inexpensive value! This may go horribly wrong...
This time, as we test a 1998 Rover 416 SLi Automatic Saloon, a type of car that I also used to own. (No surprises there, then.) Be prepared for more saggy door cards, door handles which fall off, clocks that may or may not work, poor rear visibility and non-functioning clocks, just like on a Rover 45, but also plenty of personal nostalgia, a very clean Honda D-Series engine, unexpected air conditioning and really very little of any consequence at all. Nothing untoward, then...

I'm enjoying the Rover content very much. I remember seeing so many of these 90s Rovers when they were brand new so it's great to see them reviewed now, both to bring back memories and to see how well they have fared over the years. Jude seems to be good at sniffing good examples out

Mr Currie loves his bargains, and this isn't the last of his cars you will be seeing on his channel by any means! I do remember when these were new cars as well, I wasn't interested in them then, but I certainly am now. They make surprisingly good starter classics, actually.

Ah yes, the Honda engine was only available as a 1.6 with the automatic and they just seem to keep going! Of course, the platform was originally a Honda design anyway, which is why the engine looks right at home there...

I got exactly the same car , just in blue, here in Germany. All door handles fell off, roof liner is sagging, central locking doesn’t work, but otherwise it drove without any problems for the past 5 years. I always drive full throttle on the Autobahn and it does that without any complaints. Great little shitbox.

Thank you ever so much indeed for watching and commenting! Yes, these HH-R 400s are pretty good for not much money, especially this Honda D-Series engined variant. All those issues you have mentioned are pretty common on one of these, sadly!

Sorry but I did chuckle when you broke the door handle! 😅 I did the same on my parents' MG Maestro 1600 circa 1990. Conveniently we were parked outside Unipart outlet at the time getting another spare part. I think an HHR Rover like this was on my parents' shortlist as a used buy when replacing their mark 3 Astra in 2000/01. Toyota Carina E was also shortlisted. However, as they were getting older and creakier the criteria changed for an 'upright' car and so they bought a very comfortable Renault Megane Scenic instead.
@lloydvehicleconsulting
@lloydvehicleconsulting 3 жыл бұрын
Yes, I had actually put the door handle back on a few minutes before we filmed this, so I wasn't happy when it fell off again. It is, however, a common HH-R issue. I think that the Carina E and the HH-R would have been very much my preference over a Scenic, but those Renaults were ridiculously popular at the time, and it is easy to see why.

Towards the end of this video, a Volvo advert pops up in which Chinese-owned Volvo brags that their new cars have built in cameras to prevent "driver intoxication and distraction". So, your car is constantly watching you, monitoring your every move. How utterly miserable. In contrast, the sheer simplicity and freedom of driving a 20 year old Rover seems downright glorious.

I think that is why we like our 45 V6 so much. It is essentially just a facelifted one of these with more equipment and a V6 engine! It is comfortable, luxurious and simple to use, probably exactly what people were looking for then and, for a certain type of person, still is. I am not against modern cars, and our SsangYong is just over a year old, but it is a bit more complicated than this. It is also has cameras monitoring what is going on, but not to this extent. I know many viewers prefer the older cars, but I happen to like both types, which I think allows us to have a bit of balance rather than just one or the other.

Definitely classier than the Ford Escort, the Vauxhall Astra and indeed the Volkswagen Golf. However, all three rivals at this time had engines that were very reliable and long lasting, if not as punchy or smooth as the Rover 400. The weaknesses of the K Series, once they became known would have put a lot of customers off. When the R8 K Series was launched it went straight to the top of the class because of its quality and its engine, that is where it should have stayed.

Yes, compared with an Escort or Astra of the time, this HH-R 400 looks very classy indeed. This one has the almost indestructable Honda D-Series engine, so no head gasket problems there. A K Series can be brilliant if well looked after, though.

Enjoyed your video and review. Always felt the 400 saloon was a bit of an underrated car, especially when bought in SLi and GSi trim levels, and more so with the 2.0 litre engine. The problem Rover had with these though is they tried to pitch the saloon versions up against the likes of the Mondeo and Peugeot 406 which it just wasn’t big enough to compete with.

Thank you ever so much indeed for watching! We own a 2003 45 2.0 V6 Connoisseur, which I think may have been in the background of the review, and that certainly was trying to go a bit upmarket, although when they launched the 45 as a replacement for the HH-R 400, they did price the four cylinder models a bit more realistically. The 2.0 T-Series was a fantastic engine, it just didn't meet Euro III emissions standards, unfortunately. The HH-R 400 certainly was not a realistic alternative to a 406 (I reviewed a V6 version of one of those in No Budget Reviews just before I did this 416), much as Rover wanted it to be! Glad you enjoyed this review.
@Rover75ConnoisseurSE
@Rover75ConnoisseurSE 2 жыл бұрын
But if you look at the sizing of the 406 sedan and the 400/45 sedan it’s one inch different. The 75 is the Executive Car so what you comparing to this 406 when the 75 is an Executive Car and compared to cars like the Volvo S80, Alfa Romeo 166, Jaguar S-Type, Vauxhall Omega and others. When the 45 is clearly 178 inches long in saloon form and the 406 is 179 inches long. You saying the 400/45 isn’t big enough to compete with the Incredibly Boring and Dated 406 and saying it should be with a 306, when it’s been stated that the 200/25 (R3) has more room inside than a Peugeot 306. That’s like putting a Vauxhall Omega into Mondeo Territory when in fact it should be in Scorpio Territory. The 200/25 is 306 and Focus Territory and the 400/45 is easily 406 and Mondeo Territory.

The wheels on that are the proper alloys for it, mine had them but the previous owner removed them and changed them for some MG ZR wheels but with Rover centre caps, the originals on mind were in pretty poor condition apparently. It's a very difficult thing to say. Although the engines (in this case, a Honda D-Series) are very reliable if they are well looked after, there are a number of problem areas with these cars, as with anything which is really old. There is a very good enthusiast community for them, however.

I’ve always liked the Rover marque. The last Rover Federalized for sale in the USA was the SD1. With quad headlights to meet our (outdated) regulations, it looked more like a four-door Toyota Celica than ever, and it unfortunately sold only in very low numbers. I’d always hoped that Rover would get its act together and return to the “British Mercedes” ideal that made the P5 and P6 so desirable. I think the Rover 75 might have been a seller in the USA with the right marketing. It wasn’t Federalized for sale here, although it WAS offered in Mexico. This downmarket Rover for 1998 looks like a decent, workaday vehicle, but it really doesn’t speak “Rover” to me. Maybe that’s because I’ve been so Rover-deprived for so long.

Thank you ever so much indeed for watching! I have had eight Rovers, so a bit biased perhaps... The Sterling was effectively a Rover too, but they didn't last long on the American market, despite being Honda/Acura Legend based. My Rover 45 V6 is the facelifted version of this car with a V6 engine, and I absolutely love it. The review as part of the Tweed Jacket Reviews series is also on the channel. It isn't really the same sort of car as a P5 or P6, that is more what the 75 was, and I have reviewed a number of MG ZTs on No Budget Reviews, which are the sister cars to the 75s, and I do quite like them....

The D-Series Honda engine does fit, but the reason why they kept it with the HH-R was because the car was originally designed for that engine in the Japanese domestic market. Despite being heavily based on the R8 front end, the R3 was Rover's own design, which was designed for the K-Series from the start, so I think that they decided not to licence any Honda engines unnecessarily, particularly as they turn in the opposite direction from a K-Series anyway. That probably made maintenance on an R3 a bit easier. The HH-R platform ended up having a V6 in it anyway, which means that it is pretty versatile, but all these variants made it a bit more expensive to produce.

I do prefer the front end of the 400 over the 45. Also, even though 400 and 45 are the same body, the 400 should have a fraction more rear legroom thanks to the more sensiblly sized front seats. The early 45's had those great big 75 style seats which was great for people in the front but took up the already limited rear space This was improved slghtly with the facelift.

@@lloydvehicleconsulting that’s right. I think overall the Rover 400 seats were probably the best!..... Rover 400 seats = comfortable, high quality material used, ‘normal’ sized seats. Early 45 seats = very comfortable, very high quality material used (the leather really was good....better than what’s found in most premium brand cars!), but...way to big for the size of the car with stupidly thick back rests encroaching on rear legroom. @@ash7990 I have to say the Pre-Project 45 seats are the best with the 75 style. But it’s everyone’s preference, those early 45s from 1999-2002 was when the HHR was at its best. They were for sure compact executive cars, I think the project drive seats and interior cheapened the 45 significantly especially on the late pre-facelift cars and the 45 got it worst out of any Rover in terms of project drive. I prefer the 45 over the 400 but to me the 400 feels like a cheapened 45 and those headrests, dial font and exterior mirrors aren’t as good. Then the front end of the 45 certainly made it feel more Rover and certainly more British and upmarket which is better.

@@Rover75ConnoisseurSE Having worked with and owned HHR’s for the last 17 years, I would actually say the 400 were high quality and in fact slightly better than even early 45’s in some areas. Door handles on the 400 were stronger (rarely failed), passenger airbag module didn’t lift and warp as much, and the door mirrors were actually better……..the 45 mirrors look nicer but they produce a lot of wind noise, which was quite a well known complaint years back. The front end treatment of the MK1 45 appeared to the public as dated, adding the comfy 75 style front seats to the 45 made the rear legroom beyond tight, and of course removing the mighty 2.0 T series engine made it less competitive in the executive market. I don't think that anyone has, you know! I have done two Rover 45 reviews myself, but both are pre-facelift.

Yes, around 14 months in total. I used to have a post-facelift 2004 45 1.4 Club SE, actually.... The dashboard cracked, the SCU failed due to water ingress and so I had to get a new one plus two new keyfobs and the head gasket failed (twice). Not one of my more reliable cars, sadly...

I had a 45 MK2 facelift, which I bought instead of this *exact* car at the time. I had the choice of this for £895 or the 54 plate MK2 facelift for £550. Well, I can tell you it was alright, but there were a lot of corners cut in the last of project drive. By the time it was 15 years old there was lots of broken trim, door handles falling off among other issues which I could list all day long. The owner after me scrapped it not long after. I get it that my one was probably a bad example but I wouldn't hesitate to get another one that's a better example. The 416 in this video was sold by the first owner in 2017 @ 27k miles when they drove it into a garage door and had to give up driving. I wish I bought it now, but I'm glad to have tried the MK2 45.

@@sammytheseal2307 , yes, the post-facelift ones are generally worse... The problems with that body control unit (BCU) are legendary, especially to do with the keyfobs and not being able to program them without an original bar code. My post-facelift car also had lots of broken trim, and the door handles do sometimes fall off, as you can see from this one. My 2003 45 V6 is much better made than the 2004 example was. There are still lots of sub £1000 45s out there (in fact, I reviewed a 2000 model on this very channel), so perhaps there may be a better one for you!

I would get that door handle fixed if it were my car, and fit some parking sensors, but otherwise it would be a great daily car as it is.
