Revisiting this tune since Burt Bacharach passed away today...Honestly, it's my favorite Bacharach tune ever. Which is incredible considering how many perfect songs he wrote. I literally remember crying when I first saw this scene in Grace of my Heart because I was so moved by the song.

My favorite, too. The stunning melody and lyrics, coupled with Kristen Vigard’s beautifully expressive voice, made me burst into tears the first time I heard it. A completely visceral reaction.
@clambeandip Жыл бұрын
It’s arguably crazy that my favorite performance of actress Illeana Douglas is this dramatic moment of her lip-syncing Kristen Vigard’s perfect vocal (from “Grace Of My Heart”). Although I do prefer Bacharach’s beautiful arranging and instrumentation on he and Costello’s recording, I must confess I don’t believe I’ve ever watched this clip without tearing up. Douglas’ depiction of the nervous, self-consciousness of auditioning absolutely kills me and this song is so powerful.
@bensteckler6698 Жыл бұрын
I felt the same. This is such an underappreciated movie. I get blown away every time I listen to Elvis Costello's rendition. It's his lyric, and he puts every bit of his range and dynamism into it.

I really liked it. I just saw this movie again on tv--I haven't seen it in about 5 years--and I just HAD to hear this amazing song again. It's one of my favorite musical films--a real dark horse/sleeper of a movie that practically no one has ever heard of. The storyline parallels Carole King's life and career. That whole period of music and fashion--the late 60s/early 70s--is one of my favorite times in pop culture. The movie does a great job of capturing the zeitgeist of that era; I especially love the scenes filmed in this gorgeous little treehouse-like redwood house on Malibu Beach: so quintessentially Southern Californian in the early 70s. I rushed out to get the soundtrack after the first time I saw this film--I knew from just one viewing that the songs were great, and required repeated listenings. That album has remained as one of my favorite soundtracks. The version of this song with Elvis Costello singing is brilliant, though I think I might actually prefer Vigard's plaintive vocals, because I can so easily imagine Illeana Douglas' heartfelt acting in this scene. She was SOOOO good in this film; I really can't imagine anyone else in the role. She's a criminally under-appreciated actress--she really needs a big Oscar-worthy role to let the rest of the world in on her huge talent. And I've always loved her somewhat quirky, waifish/gamine look so different from the typical Hollywood starlet type. Great movie, great actress, great song(s).

I'm also a big fan of this movie. Director Alison Anders said in an interview that she couldn't afford the period hits, so young/mature songwriters were paired to create songs. Not only is Carole King's character very close to historic, but many of the singers and songwriters in the film have real-life links. For instance, the character in the film "Doris Shelley" played by Jennifer Jason Leigh is a mirror of Lesley Gore (It's My Party) who was a lesbian and who came out later in life and was an activist until her death.

Hands-down, this is the most beautiful moment in the movie. Whenever I watched this film, it was for that song. Kristen Vigard delivered this song exactly the way it was meant to have been delivered, with the most humanly emotional response to heartbreak. Yeah, Costello, having co-written the song with Bacharach, gets his credit for having sang on the official recording. However, there is something vulnerable, naked and pure about Kristen's performance captured at that moment. Ever since I've seen this for the first time, I've loved it since.

I am a Bacharach, Hal David, Dionne Warwick acolyte...these artists were the holy trinity to me in my music discovery years. Interestingly, I met all three in-person at various times and cities and events...and of course, was thrilled. This collaboration between Elvis Costello and Bacharach is compelling, but very dark. This song illustrates the character of the entire album, but don't let it deter you from listening...in small doses. The "made-for-tv" movie in which Ileana Douglas plays a songwriter in love with a bad boy, is hackneyed, but this song emerges as a stopping point to pay attention.

This is the point in "Grace of my Heart" when the Carole Kingesque character leaves the Brill Building writing for girl groups for California to write for television. This amazing film so far outweighs the "juke box musical" Beautiful in terms of emotional resonance. It also tells an alternate history of 60s pop with songs written by Lesley Gore for her parallel time self, as well as Carole's ex-husband and daughter contributing pop which approximates but is also aspirational for what it might have been if it had lasted. And finally, the collaboration of Elvis Costello and Burt Bacharach on the title track which began their amazing work together is worth the price of admission alone. Beautifully directed by longtime power pop fanatic Allison Anders with music supervised by her daughter Tiffany, once with 90s garage pop outfit Dinosaur Jr. and now bringing her talents to the film world.

Look for a CD compilation by Rhino titled, "Heart Beats: Romantic Movie Music". This piano & vocal version was released on that.

Now I have nothing So God give me strength 'Cause I'm weak in her wake And if I'm strong I might still break And I don't have anything to share That I won't throw away into the air That song is sung out This bell is rung out She was the light that I'd bless She took my last chance of happiness So God give me strength God give me strength I can't hold on to her God give me strength When the phone doesn't ring And I'm lost in imagining Everything that kind of love is worth As I tumble back down to the earth That song is sung out This bell is rung out She was the light that I'd bless She took my last chance of happiness So God give me strength God if she'd grant me her indulgence and decline I might as well Wipe her from my memory Fracture the spell As she becomes my enemy Maybe I was washed out Like a lip-print on his shirt See, I'm only human I want him to hurt I want him I want him to hurt Since I lost the power to pretend That there could ever be a happy ending That song is sung out This bell is rung out She was the light that I'd bless She took my last chance of happiness So God give me strength God give me strength
