Unless you need high resolution photo printing I have no idea why the hell people even buy inkjets anymore, black and white lasers are stupidly cheap and even decent colour lasers are pretty cheap these days and both support Wi-Fi and even handy features like AirPrint. I picked up a Samsung Wi-Fi colour laser printer about 12yrs ago for about £180 new and it still works and in all that time I've only changed the toners twice and drum once, all which would have been significantly cheaper than an inkjet printer which uses expensive inks and dries up after a few weeks of non use in which case I would have had to buy multiple injets in that time. I'll never buy an inkjet printer ever again. Best thing about lasers is it's always nice knowing if I don't print something for 6 months or more I can just turn the printer on and know the page will come out perfectly fine.

You don’t need a new phone every year, but I don’t get how people are hating that they’re given an option for improvement every year. If an iPhone 12 and an iPhone 11 had a five year gap between them, the iPhone 12 would have five years worth of tech upgrades. If the iPhone 11 and the iPhone 16 had a 5 year gap between them, the iPhone 16 would have the same five years worth of tech upgrades with the addition of 4 other options in between. I always loved this about phones. Phone users don’t know how good they have it. I wish they could implement this into the car industry because I had this problem last year. I had a Porsche Cayenne but it started having frequent problems, so I sold it. After that, I needed a new car but the release gap between Cayennes were so long that the newest version is still the same car I bought 6 years ago. And buying a car from 6 years ago is just a complete scam so I ended up having to buy Mercedes GLC43 AMG Coupe instead.

I understand the logical argument of, “how often do you transfer files off iPhone with USB 2.0 speeds” or “most people can’t tell the difference between 60hz and higher.” I would argue, how does Apple justify charging the same price as competitors’ phones who DO have higher refresh screens and better USB-C capabilities at the same or lower price point? It’s not an issue of “oh you’ll never use that probably” it’s an issue of Apple not offering the same value for money (hardware speaking) that other phones do. If the average person is given two phones in front of them, both costing $800, and one has 60hz refresh/lower storage/USB 2.0/less customization options and other has 90-120hz/higher storage/USB 3.0-4.0/more custom… why would you not choose Phone B and get more for your money?
@ctrl_x1770
@ctrl_x1770 Ай бұрын
Exactly. The problem isn't really on the specs itself, it's on Apple's anti-consumer moves. Apple could literally spend 10 more minutes designing the phone to deliver a 120hz or higher USB speed, but they don't, because the people are so complacent. The exact same thing happened with the headphone jacks and chargers. Same price for less features, since people keep defending Apple with the most nonsensical arguments.
@dolurosu
@dolurosu Ай бұрын
Harware is far from the only thing to consider though. You should also be considering data collection in your cost comparison. At least with google pixels you can install a custom rom like GrapheneOS which makes it the most private choice, but only a minority of people will be willing to go that far. Google collects tons of data through their Google Play Services on top of their other apps, and Google Play Services are pretty much unavoidable on most android phones. Samsung also collects tons of telemetry data, on top of Google's harvesting through Google Play services which are on Samsung phones. Apple has been shown to collect data too, but has been found to be far less. Don't get me wrong, I hate that Apple doesn't put 120Hz on their base phone, but data collection should be an important point here because your data is valuable, and should be considered a part of the cost of a phone nowadays, especially such a device that likely goes everywhere with you. Not everything is as simple as 'more hardware features for less = better'.

@@dolurosu That is a great point, and the unfortunate reality is that most people don't care about their privacy. Of course, I'm not implying that privacy isn't important just because the general populous doesn't care. And although I agree with your take on Apple and Android privacy, I'd argue that although Apple has better "stock" privacy, Android phones have better "configurable" privacy. Which is to say, an iPhone has moderately good privacy out-of-the-box, but anybody moderately competent enough in technology can configure an Android phone to be more private than an iPhone.

If you’re buying a new phone, and you’re going to hold it for 4-5 years, why not future proof yourself? The price difference between the 16+ vs the 16 Pro is only $100.00. What happens is one wave is displacing up, another is displacing down, and if they collide then the net energy is 0. One of the waves can be considered “negative” and the other “positive” and combined they equal 0. The air stops moving and as far as your ear is concerned there is no wave. @Spizzardz Ай бұрын
The point is that whenever you decide to upgrade you will be able to get a phone with the newest hardware from, at most, 1 year ago. If they only released a new phone every 3 years, and you want to upgrade 2 and a half years into the cycle you would have to buy a 2 and a half year old phone or wait another 6 months.
@d24
@d24 Ай бұрын
uhhh noo? The point is YOU don't have to do annual product upgrade. Apple and other phone companies can release phones anytime they want. Doesn't mean you have to upgrade. Its just options for other people that need and upgrade.

On a 13 pro max, had it in the cart but decided to give it one more year. Camera upgrades, the Dynamic Island seems actually useful (I use a TON of timers so it being persistent on the screen is nice) plus the button customization, usb c, and shutter all seems to add up well but hopefully one more year will feel like a newer, different phone. Plus giving AI some time to cook I think is in order. I know it sounds weird but, sometimes when they add features in software that I have access to even on my current phones I tend not to use them until the hardware changes and I take time to experiment with stuff.

that’s almost exactly my case and thoughts except with a normal sized 13 pro. i honestly can wait one more year even though the 16 would be a decent upgrade already. besides, im really thinking (hoping) 120 hz will finally trickle down to the base phone next year so i won’t have to worry about downgrading in that aspect. next year just seems like the year for upgrading from a 13 pro

It's funny because I haven't felt the need to buy a new phone since leaving Android. I bought a 12Pro Max second hand at that and it's been a flawless experience. As a 15 Pro Max user, the actual advantages to the iPhone Pro over a Plus: - Slightly improved performance means less heat overall for slightly better battery longevity. - Slightly bigger battery so long-term degradation results in more available power over time. - Double base storage - 20 Gbps USB-C instead of only 5 Gbps. Being able to copy massive files in seconds is a really nice feature. Docks also work so you can have high speed accessories and storage in one cable. It also outputs HDR out of the USB port when connected to a screen. - I prefer to use the 5X optical zoom, it's really nice for taking nice looking photos whenever possible, and the 25x digital zoom is impressive and usable. - Always-on display is nice to be able to glance on it without having to wake up, saves time and effort. you can configure the lock screen. - Bigger display means more or bigger content And no, i'm not upgrading because that's stupid. I got mine from an 8, so i probably only going to upgrade after 2030.

Same on the four year cycle, except battery life wasn’t ever really a major problem with my 12 Pro Max. When it dropped below full day usage for me, AppleCare gave me a battery swap (local Apple Store did it in less than an hour…). Four years of incremental changes add up. Do I need the new phone? No. Am I getting it because I want and trying to reason it by telling myself the trade-in discount being a sweet spot now? Definitely. You know who would care more about that and notice? Pros. Power users. That’s why it’s on the Pro models! USB speeds. So what if it has 2.0!? How many people even export from their phone?? Phones have matured so much that the base phones already outperform the pro models from years ago. We don’t need all that functionality! I guess Android hate was more in person. For someone who can have anything at any point, it makes sense to buy generic phone, based on the day-to-day use case scenario. You can record videos on cinema level cameras if you need, just ask your team for help. If at any point you'll feel, that the phone is limiting you, at no extra cost to you, you can upgrade it to the most spec one, by grabbing it from your company's warehouse shelf. For any one else, the FOMO is the problem. Person spends half of its salary on a phone which he will be stuck with for at least another year.The difference in price is very significant, so when they give advice which to get to someone who can afford the top one, its always the most capable one - but this advice based on their personal circumstances, not the person's who is asking for advice.

The fact that all my students see my phone and go “oh wow, that looks like the new iPhone 16 Pro” and I get to say “well that’s because it’s an iPhone 13 Pro and they really haven’t changed much since” is telling about how much they actually changed. When they did titanium it was a cool addition that made me think about upgrading but realistically nothing since the 13 has been anything crazy or significant enough for me to justify upgrading. Especially this new generation, I see basically no benefit in going Pro and I would probably go regular if I were looking to upgrade. The only thing is the 120hz refresh rate that I would miss. But there’s just no real benefits for me to upgrade. When something big and new comes around or when my battery is trash then I’ll upgrade

As an iphone 14 pro max user, my next phone is not going to be an iphone. Reasons and annoyances: 1. text selection is garbage, i want to click middle of the word, not the end, not the start and i know space button works for that. 2. Personal hotspot, randomly turns off while ACTIVELY using it for videos on pc, gaming. It shows its on, but its not, no fix for that. 3. When opening pdf files for work in messages, if the screen locks up it turns off the file. Cant copy from pdf too. 4. Most of the free apps in the app store are subscription scams(i dont remember this as a big problem on android, maybe its changed in like 4 years) 5. Music stops and just turns off after opening camera and going to video, have to go back to app to turn it on again 6. No volume sliders for different types of sources, music, phone etc. 7. No lock to one camera for close or far zoomed in subjects, camera just jumping from one to another and doesnt know what to do with focus 8. No button to turn off keyboard, clicking outside of the keyboard sometimes doesnt do anything, so the keyboard stays 9. No global back button, atleast they would make a optional swipe gesture to go back instead of app switch on the bottom bar

I am still using the iPhone 10s, and it doesn’t need to be replaced. I just can’t be bothered to pay all that money to get a phone that does the same thing. Calls, texts, apps, media, it’s the same. All the new features are only marginally compelling. Titanium is cool, better camera is okay, tougher glass is great, USB C is nice, more buttons could be useful. Ultimately the only reason I am considering it is better battery life (mine is 77% of original capacity), and more storage (I have 64gb). And like you guys talked about, the min storage hasn’t improved that much. The battery life hasn’t improved that much. Personally it’s the details that actually matter that aren’t compelling on the new models. If they dropped a new model that significantly improved battery life I would consider it even if there were no other changes. People who upgrade every year shouldn’t be complaining about the price considering they aren’t made to be replaced every year. They are expensive, but if it lasts 7 years I don’t really care.
