This episode is so well written. There’s a reason for the parallel between Bubbles’ one-year sobriety speech and Dukie’s farewell to Mike. Bubs reminisces about “those summer days in the park” and Dukie reminisces about “that one day summer past” when they threw piss balloons at the terrace boys. Bubbles reminisces about the sun “throwing shadows”, meanwhile Dukie says he didn’t even "throw a shadow” at the beatdown he received from the terrace boys. Superb writing and foreshadowing.

You two breaking down at the end of the episode just reminded me of how powerful this show is. It was so far ahead of its time nothing has come close to it in the 20 years since it aired. I think what makes it truly special is that, above all, it's not a show about police, or drugs, or dealers, or gang violence. It's about a city. It's about Baltimore. No other series, movie, or piece of media has captured the essence of a city, of its setting, like The Wire did for Baltimore. It broke it down, from the very top with the mayor down to the everyday citizen upset about the drugs being sold on their street's corner. I cant imagine anything ever overtaking The Wire as the greatest TV show of all time, and honestly one of the greatest pieces of media ever created.

@patrickholt2270 Жыл бұрын
"Deserve ain't got nothin' to do with it" is a quote from the Clint Eastward cowboy film _Unforgiven._ They changed the wording for this episode a little bit, because they're using it to mean something a little different from how it's used in that film. Snoop means she doesn't care if the target deserves killing, which isn't the case with William Munny in Unforgiven. He does think the person deserves it, but he also believes he deserves it too, and that what's going on is just destiny, or bad luck. I think that McNulty is representing two popular American tropes - the vigilante cop who "plays by his own rules" and disobeys his superiors to "catch the bad guys", and the similarly rule-breaking "thinking outside the box" entrepreneur who is fetishised in capitalist ideology and libertarian fiction, who finds ways to do things and achieve success where others don't have the imagination or the determination. And the interesting thing the show does with those tropes in the character McNulty is show how that kind of person is actually very disfunctional and questionable, and actually gets beaten by the system, both along the way and in the end.

This goes for all The Wire fans out there: if you need confirmation to decide whether the person you're with is your soulmate, you should get them to start watching The Wire. This is the most sensitive measurement method known. You are nearing the end of a legendary drama. It was, as if everything that was happening (and even was not happening?), right next to you, not on a screen. From the first episode of Season 1 to the last episode of Season 5, everyone (all the characters) who passed by, talked right next to you and perhaps said only to you (with different emphasis on each of you) what they did not say there. An extraordinary level of dramaturgy while remaining true to such stark realism! Definitely the best one ever made.. And, of course Jimmy McNulty... No one was ever sure if he was a real protagonist (which is an element that forms one of the most critical aspects of this drama.) But I think he was the most "real" protagonist ever written.. And, "what the fuck did you do" mate?.. But whatever you did, I'm sure you did your best..

It's interesting to think of the parallels between what McNulty and Freemon did and what Bunny did with Hamsterdam. In both cases they went outside the system, broke the rules, lied. You can't say Bunny's plan didn't have negative consequences, esp for the people who lived in his free zone but did not want to move. What makes Bunny a saint in my eyes is the school program and his adopting of Namon. But in world of the Wire, I think on balance what McN and FrMn did is on par with Hamsterdam.
@monadreher2428 Жыл бұрын
I mean Hamsterdam wasn't perfect and it developed better over time but I always respected Bunny for trying to do SOMETHING different. And while you can definitely compare Hamsterdam and the "serial killer" plan I definitely think McNulty and Freamon were far more out of pocket. But yes both cases are very interesting to think about.

Not a month from now when the legislative is history but now!" And look who came out on top out of those two scenarios smfh Ah man gotta love this show. As much as I hate Marlo that "my name is my name" scene is easily one of the highlights in the season for me. Personally made me look at his character very differently as on my first watch I didn't think too much of him at first. Jamie Hector is amazing idc what anyone says. I'm sorry you girls went through it with this episode but it's episodes like this that make The Wire standout among so many other shows or other pieces of media in general. It's a tragedy at its core and the show never strides away from that. There are some happy endings but there is still so much devastation happening underneath it all. It was so great seeing Namond striving and doing so good but then we have kids like Dukie and Michael who will very much quite possibly *never* be able to receive such an ending (let's not even talk about Randy 😞). That's life, these things happen and are *still* happening. Even though The Wire is fictional it's literally a dark reflection of our world. I enjoy a lot of shows more than The Wire (HUGE fan of BB and GoT) but for me absolutely no other show has impacted me like this show has. It opened my eyes to things even I was kind of ignorant about (namely the police and political side of things) and I'm not the only one which is one of the many beautiful things about this series. I could write a ton on Carcetti, Herc, Kima, Daniels (Lance Reddick rip 🙏 absolutely kills it in these final couple of episodes, actually the final season in general he was on it), Snoop whose death scene is oddly and brilliantly one of the series most poignant but I'm gonna end this on Bubbles. Reginald's story has come to an end and I already know you ladies are going to love the bow they put on it in the final episode. So glad yall saw it in its entirety. Even though Bubbles wasn't always connected to the main plot the show still featured him because his story still, along with him, mattered in the grand scheme of things. There will always unfortunately be darkness but that doesn't mean light is nonexistent and the fact that Bubbles, a drug addict of all people (not saying this in a disparaging manner at all btw) represents that light and manages to provide hope in a story with very little of it is just so goddamn touching and beautiful 🥹 Cutty is up there as well of course but I always see Cutty as possible change or reform, Bubbles on the other hand literally gives me hope for people. I will always advocate that Andre Royo not receiving even a freaking nomination for his performance is a crime against television. See you ladies for the final episode!

@@derps0n839 Bunk remembers the past days, Omar remembered the past days when they talked about their old community "no body, no victims, who didn't matter"
@monadreher2428 Жыл бұрын
@@achim07 Well Michael, Omar and Bunk are clearly all different individuals and not everyone has the same reaction to trauma. Also Bunk may be from the same neighborhood but again it's clear that compared to Omar and Michael he didn't have the same experiences coming up. The piss balloon incident was at the very beginning of Season 4 and literally *so much* has happened since then (we're the audience not Michael 😂). That's not to say that Michael has amnesia or something like that 😂 as I'm pretty sure he remembers the Six flags trip like cmon now. But the point of him not remembering that particular day/incident with his no longer existing friend group is symbolic of how much things have changed from those more innocent times to where Michael has ended up now.

I think he remembered that day, but he didn’t wanna make saying goodbye any harder than it needed to be by reminiscing about the old days. He had to move on with his new life and grow up fast.

the irony of Lola's seething hatred for politicians and the career path of politicians when Namond's likely heading to a similar route as Tony Gray/Tommy Carcetti. not smart enough to realize that huh Lola? you point out that the likes of Marlo and Avon are excused from the most morally despicable because of the environment in which they are fostered, and in the very next sentence point out the environment in which politicians are fostered and inevitably morally corrupted, and totally miss your own point in that different example. astounding hypocrisy. not saying that Carcetti is excused, but that the like so Marlo cannot be either.

Yes, every child who gives a speech behind a podium is going to be a Clay Davis. Amazing, astounding observation. Bravo. Especially one with such a horrible foster father like Bunny that'll let him go down that path. Truly the greatest observation of our time, Rudy.
