I had dinner with Tommy Emmanuel one night before he performed. He is one of the nicest, humblest, human being you will ever meet. I have played guitar on and off since my teens and I am now in my fifties. Tommy asked me if I wanted to play his guitar and I told him I wasn't that good and would be embarrassed, Tommy said: "nonsense mate you play for fun and because you like the guitar right? I said well yes Tommy but I can't play like you and he responded "I couldn't play like me either, it took me years to be able to play they way I play". Then he asked "how often I practice?" and I said an hour or so a day but not everyday. He responded: "I play 8-10 hours a day EVERY day. the only thing I know how to do is play guitar I cant do anything else, thank God people pay to come listen to me otherwise I would be broke" There it was, that was the answer that alluded me for years. I have friends that went on to play professionally and I could never really grasp why I wasn't as good as them. Its the time commitment, the love, and passion. What Tommy taught me in that moment was that while I love guitar it isn't the same passion he has, I have other interests that distract me from that type of commitment and that is OK. Tommy taught me to just appreciate the guitar for what it does for me in the time I have. So for those that feel intimidated like I did watching someone of Tommy or Richard's caliber play, remember they are more than likely spending way more time perfecting their craft its a full time passion for them. Play the best you can and enjoy every moment. There is nothing in the world like being able to pick up an instrument and make music whatever level you are at

Nick Crawford eh, I couldn’t do it, that’s for sure. But I don’t think it’s “the cleanest I’ve ever heard.” I heard multiple muted strings, a couple missed notes all together, and the timing got a little funky there. He rushed the tempo. Again, I couldn’t do this though. He’s muuuuch better than me. I’m just critiquing. This wouldn’t have made the studio cut, in my opinion. It’s not “perfect” enough. Nothing I play would make a studio cut though 😂

Dead poolz are you messing with me? Chet Atkins is one of the best greatest finger pickers to ever live. I’ve never seen his entertainer video so I just looked it up. Chet Atkins plays it at LEAST twice as good. Chet FEEELS the music. This guy in this video made it feel bland and flat compared to Chet Atkins. Chets version is infinitely more dynamic.
@tomtenak4967
@tomtenak4967 5 жыл бұрын
Dead poolz maybe you’re comparing the two based on speed and sound quality. You have to remember, Chet’s version was coined back in 1975. That’s 40+ years prior to this. The recording quality in this video is much better. But the actual guitar skill isn’t even comparable. Chet makes a sweet, passionate rendition, while this guy plays it very straight forward and quick. They are both very good on their own. But I don’t believe they’re even on the same musical plain.

The first time I saw this I almost cried. His playing is so close to perfect. The dynamics, the Tempo, just his insane precision with the chords and all. Its insane. Around the time I watched this is was really getting into playing guitar. I would play for hours. I'd fall asleep on my couch with my guitar, wake up, drank coffee and continued to play. I wish I will play only an eight as good as this one day. Honestly I'm afraid I will never quit make my guitar bounce like this. It feels like he's a cyborg.

I have been playing guitar on and off for 45 years, i am retired now, so I play and practice 6 hours per day, guitar now is my life, my lounge room looks like a guitar shop, gear every where, finger style is my favorite, played on a classical guitar. Now listening and watching Richard..... I am packing it in, I give up as i now realize what a rubbish guitar player I am, no amount of practice will take the place of born talent. Just kidding...no I am not. See its too late, I am too old now. Just remember, the greatest tragedy in life is to fail to embark on a quest to find what you do best, and do just THAT. I did just that... its building houses But my real love is not houses, its music, Guitar, poetry, Guitar and more guitar. Oh well, maybe next life.

I bet you’re better than 99% of other players. Seems like you have nothing to worry about. People always have a knack to compare themselves to supperiors. I bet Richard does as well! It takes twice as much time to get to the 0.1% of the top players than it took to get to the 1%. If you’re doing what you love, the only thing you need to do is relax and enjoy the ride. Good luck to you

Somehow it kinda gave me a thump on the head to wake up and start doing what I love again. So yeah, thank you for this... @Mr Messy very true. The unfortunate side of having everything accessible in this day and age at the touch of a button, is that people become very self obsessed with how they are being perceived and try too hard to impress. Thats sounds right but it really depends more on your intentions than the actions themselves......when TE plays flashy things/show's off it tends to ONLY ADD to the overall entertainment value. In such cases It's humor & not ego. Its Just a given that people didn't come & pay to watch an unimpressive musician. It is true however that the average human is FULL of Ego, beliefs & expectations etc.(all aspects of fear imo).

In my 14 years as a self taught guitarist I've learned a few immutable truths. The easiest pieces to play sound the easiest and are the least impressive. The intermediate pieces often sound the most impressive, and were often written for the guitar and are based around it's strengths. The MOST challenging pieces and styles (like you've seen here) often sound like something that people walk by at a train station and go, "That's nice, they're pretty good," but a guitarist will walk by and think, "Oh my god, they must have been practicing that for 30 years to get it to that level of execution."
