I bought a Honda Shadow 600cc VLX new in 2002, and still ride it about 1 day a week. I highly recommend a stainless steel reinforced front brake hose, some heavier and more fork oil, and rejetting the carb (older ones have 2 carbs). They share some cooling parts with the Transalp and stall easily while cold, especially since the clutch is a little tricky. Rejetting mine richer made it start easier and run better before full warm-up. I only lost about 5 miles per gallon and gained some power. The weakest point for this bike is the back shock- always go around or slow down a lot for potholes, to protect your back. It also helps to raise your butt above the seat for big bumps.

Clean goes along with profesional. However, brand matters when you snap a torxs bit or that cheap socket size winds up being 15.25 mm and strips a bolt. I have both inexpensive and expensive tools. The trick is to know when to do which.
