The problem of course is when trying to converse you don’t have time to go through the process of asking all the questions to decide if a direct or indirect object pronoun is needed.

You need to develop a feel for it and recognize certain verbs tend to take indirect object pronouns like “dar” (to give) in addition to direct object pronouns. After practice and making / correcting mistakes, it slowly becomes more automatic.

A lot of the confusion is that English defines indirect objects differently. The soup would be considered the subject of a sentence, and there would be no indirect object. It took me a while to realize this.
