A quick video to show you how we clean and maintain clutches on our Briggs LO206. The video features the Stinger clutch, but this also applies to Hilliard clutches.

We run 21 front and anywhere from 70-75 in the rear usually, but that is because that's what our track demands. It REALLY depends on your track and layout. Cheers!

Hi Nikki! We moved from the Stinger to the Hilliard Flame. I think both are equally as good for performance, the main reasons we moved are: Easier maintenance (the Hilliard doesn't have snap rings when disassembling) and probably the biggest is the Hilliard is cheaper lol. I used to try and do some of the work myself like lapping the valves and what not, but I found I'm just not that good at it lol. Also, there was some stuff I wasn't able to do like leak down tests and dyno them, so we decided to go with someone that knows what they are doing haha. We use Ghost Racing www.ghostracingengines.com/ now and are much better off!

Hi Sean! We run 219. The pro of 219 chain is you can fine tune the ratio better than 35 and the con is they aren't as durable as 35. Both get the job done though :) Thanks for watching! - Kacy

Really wd40? I understand you sanded it to rough it up some to minimize slippage but then you put wd40 on it. What’s the reason behind that

WD40 in the clutch sounds counter intuitive, but we've learned from people smarter than us; after removing the grease and sanding the surfaces, a little oil residue of WD40 provides more consistent friction. It is supposed to prevent the clutch from engaging too aggressively and helps prolong the life of the clutch. Hope this helps, and thanks for watching!

I figured the same thing. Lubricating contact surfaces seems very wrong. But I read their response. Hard to say if I agree, but they must be doing something right if it's working.

First thank you... Secondly, surprises to see oil on those bearings instead of the heaven redgrease I have always seen used. Any feedback on lros vs. Cons if each?

Hi @tolken50! We've actually never tried the redgrease you mention. Only used a bit of conventional oil. I can say we've never had an issue with oil, but can't say if the redgrease would be better. We tear down, clean, and oil after each track day. Dad's clutch bearing is going on year 3! At the very least, I could see the redgrease staying put longer than the oil, reducing the frequency of maintaining the bearing - Kacy

Hey i have a qustion. For this clutch do we have to torque it down or can we simply just tighten it down

We use an impact driver to tighten the bolt to the crankshaft. Our impact has around 1,200 in-lb of torque. We don't torque it after the impact, and haven't had an issue. Some cheap insurance is to use a dab of blue loctite on the bolt. Hope this helps!

Hi Billy, we switched to the Hilliard Flame a few years ago. They are both great clutches! The 3 main reasons we switched to the Hilliard are: 1. it's cheaper 2. Easier to take apart cause it doesn't have a snap ring holding the shoe hub to the drum 3. Tuneability - The Hilliard has a lot of options. Though we generally just run the same engagement a Stinger offers

How do you know if your clutch is worn? I’m new to karting and I don’t know if or when my clutch will be/ is worn.

The shoes are usually the indicator if the clutch is worn out. It's really a visual check, so without seeing it I can't say for sure. Feel free to email a pic of the shoes to: [e-mail] and I can try to help out. What I've found to work best, is to clean the clutch after each day at the track. Doing that prolongs the life of the clutch, and improves it's performance. I'd recommend changing the springs out at least every 5 to 6 races. The shoes can go longer, we will easily put a full season on a set of shoes. Key with the shoes is cleaning and sanding them regularly. -Kacy

I try and clean the clutch after each race weekend. A dirty clutch can cost me time on the track, and I'm not about that :) -Kacy

You cleaning those channels with that flat head....it was cringe. Lol a flathead to the side of a finger is not a way to conclude a race weekend. I crushed my ring finger replacing my sons dirt bike tire. I thought it was a genius idea to use my finger to guid the axel bolt.....rim slipped.
