Thanks for the comment Jim. We have actually done exactly what you are suggesting. The problem is when loading a moose that way is they always seem to get hung up on something, like the bumper or tailgate. That situation creates a tremendous amount of strain and when that happens, well... you end up pulling the box hooks right out. We've done that on two different trucks. We do it this way now (yes more hassle) but in the end less damage to the vehicles.

Nice piece of engineering guys. You may just inspire others who might want to do the same someday. My Moose Group taught me to quarter our Moose. It sure looks like an amazing sight to see when there is a whole Moose in a vehicle though. Congrats on the beauty harvest...got to love some tasty Moose meat...Mmmmm. Nice going guys. Thumbs up.

I have a simpler method. I mounted a 3000 lb quad winch on a headache rack. The headache rack fits into the front pockets on my F150 and a ramp made of 3/4" plywood. Both ride in the box under my "truxedo" brand tonneau cover. When I need it, I roll up the cover, drop the rack and ramp in place and winch the critter in. Total time, about 10 min's for one person.

Quartering moose IS easier to actually get the moose into the truck. But, you'll end up with your meat a LOT dirtier and more hair contamination. We always load whole if we can.

***** Bring tarps. Skin it out on the tarps and it won't get dirty. Leave the head and innards. easy peasy, no farting around.

You a simple device you can place in the placement holes on side of the truck bed. That way you could insert your pulley system in direct line with the truck bed.

Brent Hayes We have tried using those in the past, as well with newer trucks that have built in anchors. Unfortunately when pulling moose this way the moose body will often get caught on something, then too much force gets exerted. The end result is the stake corners or anchors get torn out. We damaged a few trucks before we learned our lesson.

No pic's offhand sorry, but will try to remember to take some. Took the rack and winch to local welding shop and he put it all together and painted it for me after I explained what I wanted. I bought black/red electrical wire long enough to run to battery on truck and cut it in two and put quick coupler on headache rack. Wire runs from winch to quick coupler. The long end has clamps on battery end. When I'm ready to use it, pop hood open, join quick-connect and lock onto battery

Too bad you didn't have a removable pulley mounted to the center in the front of the bed. That way just run the rope through the pulley and it would pull it straight in. When done, remove the pulley. Also, a four-wheeler mounted winch would be a lot better for loading. Just fuel for future thought.

We could quarter them for sure. We just prefer to take them back to camp in one piece whenever possible because it keeps the meat so much cleaner and free from loose hair.

I like photograph moose as much as I like to eat them. You are totally right, they are a beautiful creature and when observed in their natural environment... wow! That being said I also believe that everything in nature is put there for a purpose, if I can harvest a moose to feed my family... from nature... not a feed lot or farm raised enhanced with growth hormones. Just living life to its fullest... not at the grocery store!

seems like a lot of hassle when you could just quarter the moose there and throw the quarters in the truck would be easier.

attach a strap from one of the tie down points in the bed and in the middle of the strap attach a caribiener with a pulley that way you dont have to drill any holes

If I had to work that hard to load a moose , I'd quit hunting them ,,,,, If you have hooks in the front lower corners of the truck box , a cable from one side to the other and a snatch block , it's a lot less hassle then the way you doing it ?????

painful to watch, quarter it, i'd a probably, taken the hide off, quartered and cheese clothed it. has to be done anyway, hide is easier to remove right away and the meat cools faster. an easy quick job for 2 guys.

WOW...WHO DOES THAT? GUT IT...SKIN IT...THEN QUARTER IT (2.5 HOURS TOPS) AND BRING HEAVY PLASTIC OR A TARP SO YOU DONT GET DIRT ON THE MEAT. I ALSO HAVE TWO 5 GALLON BARRELS OF WATER TO WASH UP AND CLEAN THE MEAT IF NECESSARY.

You're doing it wrong. If you just went forward instead of backward with the atv you'd get a much better angle. Truck is the centre - tree in front of the truck to the right, moose behind the truck to the left, run the atv in front of the truck and to the left.
