Loading Precision .338 with Triebel Dies

RPR .338 loaded some 250 Lapua Scenars at 3.679 coal, shoulder was set at 2.162, cbto with sac comparator was 2.903, sitting on top of 103.5 grains of US869, Federal 215 magnum primers and neck was set at .335 shot 3 shot group last week at 100yrds was .220"😊. I did not get a chance to put it through a chrony yet.

People are surprised when I tell them that 338 LM is one of the easier cartridges to load for. There is so much powder and the bullets are so heavy that tolerance stacking has little to no impact. 300 gr. Bergers over 88 gr of H1000 gives me roughly 2800 fps. It’s a hammer on game.

I used to use N560 with the Sierra 300 HPBTMK bullets when I started reloading my 338 LAPUA about two and a half decades ago after buying my BLASER R93 LRS in the late 90's because I found it produced the highest velocities and best accuracy. But when the European powders dried up several years ago, I switched to the reloader-33, and got even higher velocities. Needles to say that's my favorite powder for the 338 LAPUA.

My setup: AI AXSR 27”, Lapua Scenar 300gr bullet, Lapua brass, CCI250, 91.8gr N570. Consistent sub half moa group. I’ve tried Berger bullet, 250gr and 300gr, Hornady 300gr a-tip, did different powder charge and seating depth, all terrible group(1 moa or worse). 300gr SMK bullet work well too.

Loaded for a Sako TRG-42 rebarreled with a 27.5” Mike Rock 5R barrel, 1-10.” My powder was Vihtavuori N-560, mind you, this was 25 years ago, pushing either 250 gr. Scenars or Sierra 300 SMK’s. The load for my 250 gr Scenars was 89.0 gr of N-560 producing an M.V. of 2948 fps. I show my group as

I have an improved 338 Lapua. It’s now got a 42° shoulder (basically a Ackley improved) I fire form using US869 powder. Then my recipe for my improved round (338 Hustler) I use 103.5 grains of Reloder 33, Federal 215, and Berger 300gn OTM. It pushes it about 3050 fps with a 28” barrel with no signs of pressure. If you go to 105gn you’ll start to see pressure.

You have a wonderful cartridge. Bump the shoulder for hunting 4 thousands. Most love the 140gr bullets. I am 26 thousand off the lands . Originally, it was for my wife, but I shot it often because it's fun and cheaper than my other rifles. I also have glass bedding on the Boyd's plainsman I'm glad to see you doing an average person budget build

H1000 is a classic powder for a 338L and a 300. I got great accuracy around 2750fps with that combo. LRT will run up to much higher speeds, without hitting pressure I can run up just under 3000fps with a berger 300. From a lapua those are some pretty fast numbers.

I use Hornaday 270gr ELD-X with Hornaday brass, and I'm using 93gr of Retumbo. Out of a Savage 110FCP (26" barrel with a 1 in 9 twist), I'm seeing an average of 2,840 fps. I also have an E.C. Tuner Brake to help dial in the grouping.

90 grains H1000, 300 grain Nosler Custom Competition HPBT, 0.5 moa or less and 2750 fps. 30" Savage 110 Elite precision. Got some Sierra Match Kings 300 grains that I haven't tried yet. I did try IMR 7828SSC and couldn't get the SD's down, same with the US869. From the other comments, looks like I need to try some R33 but you can't find the stuff. 🙂

102.3gr us869 gwt cases that I think are better then lapua this combination has shot very well for me I'm not going give any more information about my load data but they shoot half inch groups at 100 yards I'm very proud of it

Lapua brass, cci250 primers, N570 and 300 Atips. Very good reloading data (single digit SDs and ES) but some strange flyers on +600yds shots. Just got 300 Berger OTMs. Very sure Atips have something to be with those strange flyers. We will see.

Gavin , I’m getting great numbers with R33. I was hitting pressure with Retumbo and H1000 sooner than I thought I should. I haven’t tried anything else but 300 gr SMK. I’ll have to try those Lapua Scenar. Thanks for the video.

On powder charges do you allow for the variance that your powder charger measures out or do you then manually go back and trickle in to the exact powder charge that you are wanting. You said that yours measures to 0.04 grains I believe of accuracy. I don't know if that variance would or could ever so slight skew your test results.

Hey Gavin, I have a question about a fairly similar round 300rum I have about 500 rounds of max crush Rotumba. Mostly because I want to save my barrel and components are impossible to find. I want to pull and recycle some of those hot loads. Mostly 150gr Nosler BT and some 180gr BT all are crimped. I have a RCBS pulling die will the bullets be reusable? Your thoughts on crimping the rounds?
