In this video we went back to St. Bernard Parish for a night time shrimping trip. After that I took the shrimp to Rebouche's Cafe in St. Bernard to cook up shrimp benedict.

Growing up as a Robin, I lived in a pickin' box out of Shell Beach on the Norman R. When it wasn't shrimpin', it was oysters. When it wasn't oysters, it was crabs. Then school, rinse and repeat. Sucked at the time but I would give anything to go back and do it all again.

St Bernard Parish is well situated for this type of shrimping-MY shrimping family heritage is around the DuLac DuLarge area of Terrebonne Parish-the harder you work at it the better economically-sadly the last hurricane -Ida-really did a job on the infrastructure and boats-shrimp prices have been down-still the people of South Louisiana are not about to give up-shrimping oysters crabbing are and will always be our culture anchor

I come from a long line of fishermen. Most of my family fished out of the Hopedale area or Lafitte. I got out of commercial fishing about 6-7 years ago. I miss being out there sometimes, but it’s a gamble. You gamble your with your money, and you gamble with your life whenever you go out. I have a uncle and a cousin who lost their arm on a boat. One was dredging oysters and one was trawling for shrimp. Both of them lost their arm by a wench.

The shrimpers here in the gulf states never get the right price for their product. I had a friend who did the commercial fisherman thing for years. He said the prices they would get paid at the dock was nothing compared to what the middlemen would get paid for the shrimp. Yet they do all the work, but the buyers know that shrimp will only last for so long. My friend use to have people he knew who would buy shrimp for him for more than the docks would pay him. It's hard work, but you are the boss.

I've never looked down on any of the shrimpers around where I used to live. It was then and still is now a life where you won't be rich. You'll be filthy sometimes, but not filthy with money. Those were some of the best folks, a few could be rough around the edges. More so when catches were small and expenses stacked higher than stored nets. The ones I really liked to deal with would sell by-catch right off the boat by the bucket load. All sorts of small fish and crabs. Much of the fish would be dead from being out the water too long or from being at the bottom of the net. Basically crushed by the weight of the rest of the catch. Three dollars a mix bucket, you supply the buckets. Use it for filling the bait cages of crab pots, cut bait for larger fish. Crabs for sheepshead or drum. Occasionally you could get a bucket of head-on for about $8 a gallon. Seems high but at the same dock they were getting about $2.50-$4 a gallon no matter the size because the buy house knew he had a lock on things so he'd force buy cheap and then bulk sell high. Hence, had a decent enough boat to go out to meet the boats on the water, you could come gangbusters on the cheap. Anyway, it's not a job, it's your life. Anyone that says "just do something else." Those are the people that tend to complain the most about how they need to have student debt erased or that they're owed things just for being.

@@OutsidetheLevees In one way it's understandable, but on the other hand it's a crying shame. Kind of like buying something from another town when your neighbor is selling the same thing but for a little more because of local regulations and taxes. He and his family and employees are hiring or starving and you are supporting his competition. Everyone is looking at the bottom line and but their neighbor. It will be a bad thing when we have to depend on sewage reared seafood because it's neighbors have gone broke. So many local and family businesses such as shrimpers have already been "done in" on the southeast coast due to imports. I believe our Federal Government and USDA are not for the American locals but for the possible kickbacks that they probably are receiving grin the foreign import lobbyists. We need to be loyal to our neighbors and our neighbors need to be fair with us too. Not arguing with you, but stating my opinion. Prayers for the local people and their livelyhoods. This IMHO JS SMH. Would it be legal to keep legal size and in season fish and crabs caught in these nets, or do they have to be released? Great work! And shrimpers, please know that you are special and appreciated at least by this one old broken down fat man! 😂

I don't understand why you climb on the sort table to shovel the shrimp, surely another door open and push them in. Well in my eyes it makes more sense
