This video shows how you can use MS Excel to (a) determine your fixed monthly payment on a loan, (b) construct a complete amortization schedule and (c) determine the balloon payment to retire the loan early. All of these aspects are discussed using a fairly realistic example of an auto-loan.

What if they make large payments in between?

I recommend that you make an additional column, "Additional Principal paid", right next to "Principal Paid". In this column you can enter the additional payments being made towards the principal in between. In this case, the "Loan Balance" at the benginning of every month will get reduced by the SUM of "Principal Paid" and "Additional Principal Paid".

@@VividImageryPro You are right, it will. Specifically, the amount going towards principal and interest each month will change. Give me some time, I'll share a Google Sheet with you that can help you with that.

Thank you for the detailed presentation that was very easy to understand !!I have a question regarding paying down the principal early as it relates to a true balloon payment. Can I message you? It's a 3 year Balloon I'm thinking that if I pay additional payments to the principal ahead of time it reduces the balloon payment at the end. Am I thinking about that correctly?
