1971 was a magical year as it had amazing diversity in music. As a young child in that year I purchased soul, rock, blues, country, & this pop classic. I also bought Lobo's follow-up single, "She Didn't Do Magic", which is another amazing record. Lobo said it best: "How I Love Being A Free Man"

Ha! That's one of our theme songs! My wife and I love to travel and camp, and she randomly nicknamed our dog Boo. On one of our road trips it occurred to me that I was going down the road with Me and You and a Dog Named Boo, traveling and living off the land, and just laughed out loud. She had never heard the song. It instantly became one of our anthems. It was at the top of our playlist when we moved cross-country and took two months and 5,500 miles to do it. One of our other ones is a ridiculous song with a great message: "You Can't Rollerskate In A Buffalo Herd" by Roger Miller.

I was around 10 when this song came out. It was always a thrill for me when I heard it, which wasn't often enough. We didn't gave an eight track in our old VW Bug. Just an AM radio. We had a turntable at home, But Mom and Dad controlled that particular device. Can you imagin that, kids? It was the record player, the radio, or nothing. Personal media hadn't been invented yet. Thanks for the great memory, MRM!

My goodness I haven't heard this song in a long time! I was about 8 or 9 when this came out? 🤔 I love this song! It's simply about being free to go where you want to go, when you want to go, no ties. Sometimes, that sounds like heaven to me.

1980 I was barely 19 years old. Had just finished my 1st year of college. For $300 and gas, food and hotel money, I drove from Texas to Illinois to pick up a car for my cousin. By the time we pulled back into Texas that June morning, I knew every song on the Lobo's tape. Fantastic memories. I had forgotten. Thank you for that.

Summer 1972. Me and my family (I was 9 at the time) did a six week road trip across Canada and the US, and although this song was already a bit obsolete in terms of airplay, it popped up every so often on the radio throughout that trip. I remember hearing it in a restaurant at the (long since gone) Hagerstown Motel & Restaurant in Hagerstown, Maryland. I still think of Hagerstown whenever I hear this song, even though it was a few thousand miles from our home in Kamloops, British Columbia. It felt like a nice personable small East Coast town and summed up the best qualities of such towns all over North America.

Reminds me of being happy. Being a kid. Wanting to take myself & my bf on a trip during the summer. Traveling, working when needed, just really enjoying a world outsidewhat's of our own. Boo's our friendly protector & in allegory, keeps us to what's now being on a summer road trip, feeling free, whole & happy...& to our home lives. The music, the happy beat, the lyrics all bring a wonderness of togetherness. Love this. Such a simple song to take us totally outside of ourselves the way it does! BOO❤🎼😉

The good 'ol days rolled into a song. I remember sitting at the park eating ice cream; swimming at the public pool; "goofy 60's dancing" to this song on my sidewalk with my childhood friends; Singing this out loud with friends going to the store to by icee's and candy; driving to the lake with family. I remember laughing, smiling, and being happier. A lot of good, good times....Good request, I had forgotten this gem from back in the days. Thanks Modern Renaissance Man. 👍

Another one of my favorites growing up in the 70's. The living free and traveling fantasy life. My mom moved us around the country a lot so traveling is in my blood. Songs like this always touch my heart. But alas, as I grew older I realized that this kind of life is not what I wanted. At 53 I have finally put roots down and my travels always bring me back home.

Another song that tells a story of part of the singer's life is 'Brooklyn Roads' by Neil Diamond. Simon and Garfunkel did one also called 'Lincoln Duncan', but I don't think it's based on either of their lives, but it's the same theme.

I bought the 45 at a target store for 99 cents. I used to go every week to check out all of the new stuff, sometimes I would go home with about 6 or 8 new records it was always fun. When you said road trip that brought up WONDERFUL memories of when I was about 15 years old and for summer vacation I went with my aunt and cousin and my grandma for a 2 week road trip. My aunt had planned out were we would go and what hotels to stay at. We saw Canada Mexico Texas Colorado new Orleans Mississippi, California , Louisiana just to name a few. THE BEST TIME OF MY TEEN YEARS. I went on another 2 week trip when I was 16 one of our stops was las Vegas we saw Elvis at the Hilton Hotel THAT WAS FANTASTIC! JUST THOSE 2 ROAD TRIP I SAW 32 STATES, I LOVED IT.

It reminds me of my preteens taking long family trips in the the old Plymouth station wagon. My dad was a country fan but If he ever heard this song while surfing the radio dial he would tunel it in and turn it up. This would have been the early to mid 70s. My dad has been gone for a number of years now but this song always makes me think of him and how much i miss him. He sure did a lot to educate me and help make my life a better place.

Great memories of my era in music. I did two cross country trips in my Navy days in between duty stations, some memories there, but most recently, after nearly losing my wife and her mom both to the virus 2 years ago, I had to deal with if it would be just me and my little dog -and i probably would have made a trip across the states to enjoy the beauty of the land God blessed us with. Lobo has some beautiful music. Blessings brother. I’m Christ alone, we place our trust. 🙏

First time I heard this song, I was camping with my family. It seemed appropriate somehow. Most songs like this were mile--marker songs for my life. You are a sweetheart, and though you try, you almost always miss the mark when you try and dissect our music. Sometimes a song is just a song. Sometimes it is sending a message. Sometimes! They got caught robbin' from an old hen? Then the farmer made them earn their keep. Was the old hen a chicken, or an old lady? Years ago, farmers would hire drifters to help with the farm work, not only to help the drifter, but to help themselves. These days, you can't trust people drifting about, so nobody is willing to hire a drifter, since they're probably an addict. I used to love this song, as a kid, because it was so cute. Now, I see these "cute" people as thieves, and don't like them. And I despise thieves. Now I wish I had never revisited this song I used to love, as a child. I didn't understand the words as much as I do now. Now I see they used cuteness to lie and steal their way thru life.

Yes, it WAS about hippies, preferring to ride around seeing the country, living out of their truck, stealing eggs, working just enough for a tank of gas, etc. They would work short term, picking fruit, picking corn, etc, but didn't want a regular job, and above all, avoided "working for the MAN!" Might ride out to Nebraska and join a commune. Might ride up to Vermont and buy an old mill. Might get together with a few friends, and buy an old barn to live in. But wanted to remain free of schedule and obligations. I loved this song!, although I never wanted that lifestyle. : ) This video was wierd, though.
