I think they probably are still eating when the trap gets pulled up, but it is hard to get out as the netting makes it feel like they can get out, they don't really see except shadows they go by feel with teir anttenae

I like videos such as this that doesn't cut them too short. One thing that puzzles me is the lack of any other species, I didn't see any kind of fish in the area, only other specie I saw was a very small translucent shrimp. Is it normal for this area to be as barren as it was in this video.

The bait is located far to close to the entrance, half the lobsters will just simply back out.
@Graham199513 жыл бұрын
You got it in one. Lobsters need to be in by the time they get to the bait, then if disturbed they will go into a corner then the parlour.

one other thing.. can anyone tell me why lobsters and crabs are never seen nor caught together? do lobsters eat crabs? one would think droping a pot with bait would attract both. especially in waters that have an abundance of both creatures.
@CharlieFitz4116 жыл бұрын
This i can answer. Yes you can catch lobster and crabs together and we do quite often. Lobsters are fairly aggressive and will eat crabs if they are in the trap for to long together, but they will do the same with other lobsters. But both are rare to see. The crabs may be kept back by the lobsters a for the most part, but the main reason is you see a lot more crabs on sandy bottom, the trap will usually have more if not all crabs on sandy bottom, so we try to avoid setting on it, witch will in turn reduce the crabs we catch. Now that is for what we call jonny crabs. If you are talking Snow crabs witch we also fish in this area. They are in deeper colder water there is a good few miles off shore before you start to see them usually, but on some rare occasions in our deepest traps and in the colder months Snow crabs have been caught locally in lobster traps.
@xevious25016 жыл бұрын
thats kinda what i thought, that depending on the crab species, some would be found closer to shore and other larger crabs would be in much colder deeper waters. Lobsters i figure would be somewhere in between. and dropping pots in that grey zone could increase the chances of catching both in one trap.
@NilsHedstrom4 жыл бұрын
xevious2501 In Sweden we have brown crabs and you will get A LOT of them when fishing for lobster. A pot might be filled with 5 crabs or more and only one lobster. But placing the trap at the right spots might reduce crab catches.

I used the Gopro Hero 3, in the 35 meter water proof case. It was attached to a small handle mound (something like a short selfie stick). I then zip ted it to the bow on the inside of the trap. We are in about 5 fathoms or 10 meters.

lyndon connor The gopro was mounted to a handle that you would use for swimming. That handle was tied to the trap. I believe the sound you are talking about is, the air that was coming out of the handle.

what are you using 4 bait in the bag, if you don't mind me asking.
@CharlieFitz4118 жыл бұрын
That day we were using frozen mackerel in the bait bag and frozen black back on the top of the spindle. But that was before there was any fresh around. Now we mostly use whatever we can get for fresh now and mackerel on the spindle instead of black back. (they are all out of frozen black back)

Sorry, can anyone explain to me how does this trap work? I didn't understand why the first Lobster get stucked!!
@CharlieFitz4118 жыл бұрын
Hi Camilo, There are tow rings where the lobsters can get into the trap, You get a good look at one of them in the video. It is slightly razed and tapered inward. This is to allow the lobsters to get in easily and make it a little harder for them to get out. (but as you can see they are not stupid they know how to get out). The goal is to get them to go completely in the trap. Just like the first lobster ended up doing. Towards the back of the trap there is a mesh ramp. This ramp is also tapered from the top and sides. It leaves plenty of room for the lobster to get in. Unlike the rings we are not trying to lure them in with bait, we are trying to trap them when they are trying to find a way out of the trap, So this opening is much harder to get back out through. (Not impossible but much much harder). Hope this helps.
@HabsGeorge7 жыл бұрын
Lobsters enter the pot for the bait, they go thru a nuzzle, drop down then only way out is to climb the heading on other end of pot. When he climbs up the heading he drops into another compartment called the bedroom and is trapped.

great video but seems a poor place to site the bait as the lobsters can get a feed without fully entering the pot
@CharlieFitz4118 жыл бұрын
Ya it may look that way. But if they can't reach the bait form the ring they are less likely to enter the trap. Trust me with all the people fishing where I live if there was a better spot to put it someone would have tried it. To me the lobsters are not stupid they feel safer being able to reach the bait without going all the way in the trap.

im sure your all aware that lobsters and other crustations use to be considered bad bycatch. and served to farm animals the poor prisoners and slaves. there use to be some religious connentation to the eating of shell fish but i think those things changed in the new testament. also stuff like balony use to be considered highly valued rich mans food. i wonder what was the circumstances that flipped the perception of shell fish. my only assumption is that the hardship of the civil war forced people to not be so picky.
@CharlieFitz4116 жыл бұрын
Don’t quote me on this but if I remember correctly spam (the food) was shipped of in times of war. And the soldiers hated it just like the ones who had to eat lobster. But after the war the soldiers started to crave spam because they won’t eating it any more. So when the people that had to eat lobster were no longer forced to they may have started to miss eating it.
@xevious25016 жыл бұрын
yeah thats sounds alot like human nature. Hating something when your going thru it, but when its gone, start looking back on the events, cherishing the ordeal. As they say the best times in ones life is when you believe things are at their worst. Its when your most alive, most strong, and life in general is easier than whats to come but you cant see it. Its like people that are poor then come into wealth, only then do they realize the value of what they once had, oppose to all thats lacking having acquired their dreams and desires.

The wife just bought two 1lb lobsters for $10 apiece in Oklahoma, which led me to wonder why lobsters are so cheap. Are the Maine lobstermen doing ok? Are they making a decent wage? Is there an over fishing, etc? Ive found out 2 things in the last 2 days: Lobstermen are REALLY the backbone behind conservation, meaning there are good lobster numbers because of self regulation (mostly through size limits and designed trap ineffeciencies). And 2, the buyers are becoming "Walmart" type corporations. Super buyers that are doing all the buying and in general keeping the fisherman from getting their fair share. The reason for the low price is the success the fishermen have had in the past 20 years at sustaining the lobsters, and they are therefore plentiful this year
@oconnaugh7 жыл бұрын
What part of the country are you purchasing these yummy lobster? And well, as I see it money is power. And I like to think I spend mine through the right channels. Ive talked to several people about where to buy seafood that is best for the families providing the products. It seems the one rule is just not Walmart (becoming too powerful and want to take a huge chunk). I ordered some tails through a lobster fishermans Co-op in Maine but haven't tried em yet. Theyre pricey but that's ok, as long as the quality is there.
@CharlieFitz4117 жыл бұрын
The lobsters in the video are form Northern Cape Breton in Nova Scotia, Canada. They are sold to Victoria Co-op fisheries, witch is owned by the local fisherman. They are cooked and packaged or sold whole to many locations around the world. I am not sure at who some of the current buyers are. But I recall Red Lobster being a big buyer in the past. One good spot to buy lobsters straight off the boat. We sell lobsters to tourists at least a few times a year. ( and most fisherman sell them at the price the co-op is buying them for so they are cheaper)

Why can't they just go back out the hole.
@CharlieFitz4116 жыл бұрын
The wood hoop you see is like the bottom of a funnel it goes into the trap making it easier to get in than out. But they can and do get out quite easy. At the back of the trap there is a mesh reap also like a funnel witch is a harder to get out of, also in the back section there is a plastic panel with you can not see. It has an opening witch lets smaller lobsters escape but bigger ones can not fit out. This hatch is also attached with clips that will brake down and fall off allowing all lobsters that can fit in the trap get out. So if a trap is lost then it will eventually just let lobsters and fish come and go with out taping them. In short they can just get back out but it is just a little harder than getting in and with so many lobsters coming and going it eventually catches a few of them.
