Our early founders were deists at best, I think people who lived before Geology, Paleontology, and Relativity can be forgiven for any "God of the Gaps" thinking, and most modern presidents (at the very least) accept the age of the Earth. Even Dubbya claimed to not be a literalist (though he had issues with the Theory of Evolution). We know Obama was no fundamentalist simply by the policies he supported, and Trump only uses Christianity for cheap political points among his highly credulous supporters. So, as far as presidents go, we may have never had a fundamentalist get elected to office, and if we did, it seems likely that it was in a time when science was still more or less mum on the age of the Earth. Though it is hard to say outright considering prior to the 1950s, religious belief was not the deciding factor that it is today when it comes to presidents. In fact, Thomas Jefferson rejected the divinity of Christ, and very little is known of Abraham Lincoln's religious beliefs. Though, close friends rejected the idea that Lincoln was a believing Christian. As far as Vice Presidents go... Well, we have Mike Pence. I think we can stop there.

The difference between the lobster and the fetus is that the fetus can't feel pain. Before 22 weeks of gestation the signals don't get through to the correct parts of the brain. And what doesn't reach the brain doesn't result in pain. It's the same concept that makes opioid pain medications work.

"Humane" refers to the way humans are expected to behave with empathy and compassion for other conscious beings, whether they be humans or other animals. The word has the same derivation as the word human but it refers to how humans are expected to behave rather than how they can expect others to behave towards them. So a human can treat a lobster inhumanely but a lobster cannot act inhumanely towards a human.

15:57 _"... can you use the word 'inhumane' for a lobster?"_ so, here's the deal: "humane" originally meant "having the qualities appropriate to a human", which (ca. 1500) meant "friendly", "courteous", and so on, and shifted (by ca. 1600) to "compassionate". so, "inhumane" is literally "not befitting a human", therefore "cruel". it has literally *never* meant that the object of the compassion was a human. if Ken really wants to say that humans are a special creation, completely different from animals, this is the wrong point for him to take up. also, good job, Morgan, for focusing on what the word actually means *_now._* that's absolutely what's important; it's just that Ken is doubly wrong, on this one.
@simongiles97497 жыл бұрын
ThoperSought That's what I thought - it's the subject committing the act that is humane or inhumane, its not defined by the object of the act.
@timberry47097 жыл бұрын
Inhumane: "not befitting a human"; "without compassion for misery or suffering; cruel". It all sounds pretty "human" to me.
@simongiles97497 жыл бұрын
Tim Berry "The man tortured the lobster". "The man"= object of the sentence. "The lobster" = subject of the sentence. The (in)humanity is determined by the object, not the subject. "The lion mauled the wildebeest" - not an inhumane action, no humans. "The lion mauled the dentist" - also not an inhumane action, human is subject. "The dentist killed the lion" - has potential to be judged inhumane.
@timberry47097 жыл бұрын
"A joke isn't funny you have to explain it." The point I was TRYING to make was: being "without compassion for misery or suffering; cruel" aren't 'inhuman' traits but are, in fact, all too human traits.

8:50 on the subject of corporal punishment i like to tell the story of my school where caning was the norm, we used to hide the teachers canes or shred them, but we still got a whacking. the part of the story that's relevant though is that we had a competition to see who could get the most canings in a month, so that's how effective sadistic punishments are, we were going out of our way to get into trouble, all we took away from that was how to be effective bullies. we had teachers that quit cos they got tired of being threatened, we had at least one who had a nervous breakdown, and a supply teacher that had already gone through hell came back full time for some reason, but he only lasted a term, so much for bible stories in morning assembly. on the other hand we had a gay english teacher, a little old lady who also taught english, and an art master who influenced my whole life, who NEVER had any trouble, they had us enthralled. if you have to use force to get people on board, you're doing something wrong. when pain is inflicted in the name of love it's usually called bdsm. when i hung out with people from the bdsm community i found them to be supportive, intelligent and caring, you have to have trust if you're letting someone tie you up and whip you, but a common theme, most not all, was abuse at an early age, and often as not from a family member. beating your children is not going to help them become well adjusted. 9:30 thank bastet you cleared that up. although i know, or used to know, a lot of women who enjoy being spanked, and several female authors who make tidy sums from books around the subject. it's all a matter of taste.

We could have some fun here. Ken and his team are upset about a new Canadian law that says parents should respect kids choices on gender and sexuality. Obviously it covers a lot more stuff than that, but he doesn't car about the details. Now the law (from what I can gather watching this while cooking) also includes the child's religious choice. If we tell Ken, that people are trying to stop a law to do with respecting kids religious choices. He'll probably turn around and start defending it. While at the same time trying to condemn it.

Great fun as always. I know that many Christians say that the we no longer need to follow the laws in Leviticus and Deuteronomy (usually in reference to mixed fiber clothes and eating lobster) because of Jesus' sacrifice wiping the slate clean and creating a new covenant with man. However If Ham uses that as a justification for eating lobster, then we must also apply this to the laws against homosexuality in Leviticus. If he uses that justification then he puts himself in a bit of a sticky pickle in regards to his view on homosexuality. If he does not invalidate Leviticus then he is also in a bit of a sticky pickle because not only is he violating God's law by eating Lobster, he is doing something far worse to God as he is leading others into sin by encouraging others to eat lobster and thus violate Gods law.
@Shinodaluva7 жыл бұрын
spamfilter32 mmm. Pickled lobster was all I needed to hear.
@simongiles97497 жыл бұрын
spamfilter32 It doesn't really make theological sense anyway. Jesus claims that He's not there to overturn the Mosaic Law, but the human sacrifice part of Christianity only really replaces all the verses and verses of barbecue recipes from Leviticus as the "sacrifice to end all sacrifices". Later we get Paul claiming that circumcision only needs to be metaphorical to help his sell to the Gentiles. So it's the immutable law of God. Until you decide it isn't. As long as you say Jesus told you in a dream.

Nearly every culture has a story about a great flood because agricultural societies always start on flood plains. That is where the soil is always loose and fertile and there is plenty of fresh water, the things vital for farming. When you build on a flood plain it is inevitable that one year the river will rise higher than expected and your settlement/town/city will get flooded! Also, since you're all living on a river it's likely someone will have a boat and when their house floods they will put their family to sleep in the boat until the water goes down.

Paulogia, first I want to say that i agree with many of your critiques of Ken Ham and young-Earth creationism from a scientific viewpoint. Nonetheless, as a Christian, one of the things I was wondering is, have you looked at all of the documentary evidence for the New Testament? It's a mistake to assume that just because a literal interpretation of Genesis is false that this means that Jesus didn't rise from the dead, and I pray that you will reconsider your stance with respect to the New Testament.

I am curious...If Ken feels that Science is a religion then would that not make all the scientist his group credits as being Christian Scientist be going against the Ten commandments?

Paulogia Presumably respecting a child's religious views would include if they were an atheist.
@rudra627 жыл бұрын
And all infants are born atheists, and remain that way until they are indoctrinated with a religion. Teaching any religious views would be disrespecting the infant's natural atheistic views.

While I am all on board with rights and equal treatment - I don't think anyone, in a democracy can require me to respect anybody or anything. Respect at the level of the individual is something you feel or not. Much like belief. I can however be expected to act civilly in different ways in different social or professional roles, and recognise rights, or conform to legally acceptable behaviour. But I sure as shit can't be required to feel or express respect for anyone if I don't feel like it. I do not respect people who hit their children or effing spouses. Nor do I respect the beliefs of religious people. I may or may not respect them as persons, based on their actions. I do not expect them to respect me either. It is not a right I have. It cannot be ordained. Respect, like trust is earned. As for social roles I am a teacher. When I am working, my personal feelings of respect or the lack thereof are usually irrelevant. If they become too difficult to handle it's up to me to leave the situation, it'snot the problem of anybody else. So should we curb our actions, based on roles and situations? Of course. The demand here should be that I act professionally. Not that I fake respect I don't feel. In that situation it is a private matter. But in public discourse, as a citizien I think I have every conceivable right to my opinion. And so do the people I most disagree with. And I am sure as shit not going to respect what I don't respect.
