Yes. One of my all time favorites. It used to air on HBO every Saturday in the early morning. I watched it more times than I can remember. ...and the theme song... WOW!

Maybe my favorite film of all time. I saw a documentary once (maybe BBC?) about the making of the film. A quote there from David Puttnam, the executive producer, said about the film stays with me: "The spirit in which that film was made. If you could bottle that... aw Jesus the world would be a better place".

Saw this at the movies in 83 with my new bride and fell in love with it. 40 years later I’m sitting up watching it alone having just lost my lady to cancer and I feel her next to me holding my hand and still loving the story.

I was 8 when that happened. I grew up, and still live, in a wee village on the NW coast of Scotland….5 minutes drive from the castle in Highlander. I’m desperate to go to the USA now that I’ve raised my 3 kids. I want to go to Massachusetts and work as a nanny or a maternity nurse. I need some time away from the lochs and hills!

It all true. I lived many years in the west highlands. Walked many of those places. If there is a god, or some force. Then in western Scotland he or it can sometimes reach out onto a mountain or shore and touch you directly. I have seen the Aurora there on a mountain one night and it was breathtaking. Seen strange electrical storms coming from the atlantic. When I think back those are the memories from there that haunt me now I am far away.

but it not setin Western Scotland ! Bens beach is; beach and dune system extends for several miles between Arisaig and Mallaig. The final shot of the helicopter flying Mac back to Houston was filmed above Loch Eilt, between Lochailort and Glenfinnan.

A couple years after the movie came out my brother rented this movie for me to watch the night before I had surgery - to take my mind off what was to come. It has been one of my most favorites ever since. Knopfler's music, the scenery, the quirky story line all made it just a joy to watch.

Shot in Mallaig in the Highlands of Scotland. It really is the most beautiful place. And the villagers are just like this. Bit mad but very close to one another!

I once wrote a column for a Dutch magazine called The Local Hero pyramid where I explained that Local Hero is the movie all other movies aspire to. It is the best movie I have ever seen. I haven't seen all movies ever made, so I can't say it is the best movie ever made. However, I suspect it is.

Local Hero would have to be in my Top Ten favourite films. We watched it as a family last night and I still Ioved it, after all these years, as did our son. But our daughter was extremely underwhelmed: “nothing happened!”

@@ButtonPhonics I am Thai !! I am 19 and come from the province of Nakhon Sri Thammarat. I got introduced to this movie through Mark Knopfler and Newcastle which is the club I support. I have three movies that I always recommend to people (Snatch, Reservoir Dogs and Groundhog Day) but my favourite movie actually is Local Hero.. It's hard to recommend to people here in Thailand.. especially people in my age range. It's true that children here in Thailand nowadays are raised with endless amounts of fast paced n flashy videos on KZbin which is a shame really.. These young kids will grow up and even if they watch gems like this movie, I am sure they won't find the enjoyment and value in it at all.

Saw this as a 7/8 year old kid when it played on cable the year after it came out. For some reason this movie got to me even as a kid, it was the handful of sand scene that did it. Even to this day, this 47 year old cynical Yank loves the absolute joy and brilliance of this movie.

It shows you how a slick oil company rep found himself falling in love with the place but the locals who's place it was couldn't sell it quick enough . Ps I'm sitting here within a mile of where the beach scenes were filmed

I agree. This trailer is awful. An obvious sign the studio had no idea how to sell this film. In no way does it give any sense of its brilliant, quirky sense of humor. They're selling it like a drama or some kind of bizarre mystery.
