Unpopular opinion: The Dentons are the scariest residents of Royston Vasey. While Papa Lazarou and Edward and Tubbs are almost cartoonish in their evilness, The Dentons provide a picture of suburban horror, that nagging feeling that your distant relatives are a bit more "weird" than normal
@WeeLin3 жыл бұрын
Yes, I think you've hit the nail on the head there! It's the awkwardness of having to be polite at all times, plus the knowledge that these people are actually related to you and there's no escaping that. When you stay in someone's home for a while, you get the full weirdness that no-one else sees, and it's hard to say what would be a "normal" amount. On the other hand, you'd see Edward Tattsyrup or Papa Laz and probably just run for it!

WeeLin, I love your content and so appreciate all the work you put into your videos! On the Dentons: Not long ago I lived with/worked for a couple as a carer for their three disabled children in a tiny village and had a really, really horrible time. I struggled to explain to people what it was about this household that made me leave after just a month, then when I watched the LoG for the first time this year I finally had the Dentons to point to and say "you know them? It was basically that". The show actually really helped me to feel like my feelings and reaction to the whole experience was valid. Thankfully in the real world we have a much better chance of coming out of toxic situations not quite as screwed up as poor Benjamin....
@WeeLin3 жыл бұрын
Thanks! So sorry to hear you had your own Denton experience, and it's funny how a weird show like the League actually managed to help you make sense of a horrible situation. It's so difficult when you're in someone else's home to decide what is and isn't a reasonable request, especially when you're trying to be a good guest (plus those confusing mixed messages, such as when "get up whenever you like" actually means "6.15am, no later!")

Even in their interiors with ugly patterns and colours. Even though we know order and cleanliness is paramount in the Denton household, there is so much grotesqueness and dirtiness that surrounds the characters and their homes. It’s like an intangible dirtiness that you can’t put your finger on and can’t be gotten rid of, which is pretty symbolic.

Definitely one of their best sketches. Being shot in front of audience makes it the most traditionally sitcom. The Nude day sketch was my first intro to the league, much to my shock and confusion. In regards to the man in the scarecrow, I kind of wished he appeared in Apocalypse, inside scarecrow in the background of Jeremy's garden, just to give Mark something to do in the opening.
@WeeLin3 жыл бұрын
That's a good point - there was no Mark in the opening of Apocalypse (but we ended up with two Reeces!) Maybe if he'd been chased by Tubbs outside, then heard the scarecrow shouting for help and pulled off the hood to see Mr Ward, then Papa Laz could have scared him off the cliff. Or something like that! Shock and confusion - that's Nude Day alright! I think the Dentons worked really well because it started as more of a normal, awkward sitcom, but gradually got more scary and ridiculous. They were my favourite part of the Anniversary Specials too.

Mark was amazing as Aunty Val! I love the awkward smiling, and all the fearful little cringes whenever Benjamin does something that's about to upset Harvey. I love how seriously she seems to take things - the bit where she plays the cello at the funeral is probably one of my favourite Val moments. I'm also glad that Mark didn't use a high or "girly" voice for the character, as the deep, dulcet tones are just perfect.

Usually if the gents love something enough to reference it, it'll come up over and over again (Wicker Man, Monkey's Paw and The Exorcist come to mind). I'm guessing they were just going for old fashioned names like Harvey and Valerie, and "Denton" as a surname just sounded right to them.

Good question! I can absolutely see why there were mixed opinions on series 3. I was initially okay with the single character/group focus, probably because they started with Pauline who was one of my favourites. But I remember feeling that if the episode was about a character you didn't enjoy then you were stuck with them for nearly half an hour (also I wasn't a huge fan of most of the new characters, apart from the doctor from the first episode and the Welsh pathologist from the second). Having said that, I appreciate the storytelling in series 3 a lot more than I used to, and I think it was quite bold of them to ditch the popular sketches, catchphrases and laugh track to try something new. I talk a bit more about the changes between series 2 and 3 in my Tubbs and Edward video if you're interested? But of course, we were missing the Dentons in series 3, which was a real shame, even if they did make up for it in the Anniversary Specials.

@@WeeLin I agree, I felt like a chore watching parts of the first three episodes, hopefully the last three won't be like that. I'll check the Tubbs and Edward episode once I'm finished with the series. Do they even appear in this season except for the intro of the 1st episode? Once again, great work and keep 'em coming. Oh, yes, and I was wondering, do you plan to visit, sometimes in your lifetime, the filming location(s) of the show? And the other Q if I may ask , is what are your thoughts on David Mitchell and Robert Webb's comedy series ( the Peep Show etc.)?

Maybe they just appeared one day - wouldn't be out of character for them!

YOu forgot to mention that the Dentons were actually IN the magazine "Women with toads".

I think we'd all rather forget they were featured in "Women with Toads" magazine!

@@WeeLin I don't know.... There is a certain artistic eroticism in there somewhere. And you have to admire them for putting it out there.

Don't we all! But if I drank wine at the rate I drink tea, I'd have a bit of a problem.

Hi, this is a great series and no doubt an absolute ton of work. I'm really intrigued with Charlie & Stella but especially Lez McQueen though. Would you happen to be planning on these characters by any chance? :)
@WeeLin3 жыл бұрын
I would absolutely love to cover all of these character, and hopefully will at some stage (you're right that these do take a lot of work!) I'd love to cover Les along with the whole history of Creme Brulee, and Charlie and Stella because those get surprisingly dark at times. That would also bring up Tony, Julie (who we never see) and - of course - Luigi!

@@WeeLin Good point and I just remembered when Charlie gives extra credit at the massage parlour and falls for Tony lol I was pretty surprised by the crossover between Charlie and Iris too, but yea their sketches get pretty dark at times. I don't know about those guys if they were writing from experience, but I've been right in the middle of these situations as a kid when I was a guest at a friends house. Quite scary at the time but these sketches always make me laugh

i really hate this trend of dissecting comic characters. They are not meant to be dissected.

Great video! But surely the point is Harvey enjoys sex with men?
