I was unemployed for a long time. Got put on a lot of soul crushing restart courses, and met a lot of Paulines. All patronising and cared for nothing other than getting thru the day so they could go home, though luckily I was never embroiled in any psycho-sexual drama. Might have made the courses more interesting tho 🤔
@WeeLin

That sounds horrible, and I'm sorry you had to go through that. I've never had to do a restart, but the experience of going to a job centre and signing on was pretty miserable in itself. I've met Paulines in other places though, especially through work, and I can definitely relate to series 1 Ross (maybe not series 3!)

The thing I love most about the restart sketches is how invested all three of them are. You can tell how close to home they hit for Reece, and Steve commits more to Pauline than almost any other character he plays. Love this series, keep it up! Hoping to see Iris and Judee pop up in a Local Histories video someday, they’re some of my favorites.
@WeeLin
@WeeLin 3 жыл бұрын
Steve has said that Pauline was one of his favourite characters, and when you hear him in the commentaries you can really tell how invested he is. The fact they'd come up with a whole story behind a semi-audible throwaway line ("there was someone once...") just shows how much the gents care about these characters. Oh, Iris and Judee's bios get quite dark when you start looking at their family history, and not just the fact that they're related! I'd love to look at those two. Thanks for the suggestion!

@WeeLin
@WeeLin 3 жыл бұрын
I wondered about that the last time I watched the scene. The way Mike talks made me think that Mickey and Pauline might have been important to Geoff, which makes sense if he's Mickey's uncle. True, this means he hasn't paid his nephew a visit in years and didn't have his address, but then they might not have a very close relationship (I mean, he did almost hit Pauline with a van!). Mind you, Royston Vasey is the kind of place where everyone knows everyone else, so that might be an explanation. But I think it's more interesting if they are related!

For me with the education thing I kinda think both are right, she doesn't inherently say she doesn't have qualifications, she just left school early and didn't go to college. I'm kinda going off memory and a little imagination but I always felt when watching it that she never left the job centre, I just imagined she went after leaving school to sign on and achieved the various diplomas through job centre training courses before eventually getting a job there because she basically knew it all in the end anyway. Part of the irony of her position to me was she has no concept of jobs out in the real world, I know she's an exaggerated character but it did feel like she lived in a fantasy framed around job centre expectations but ultimately just keeping her jobseekers in the same perpetual limbo she was never got past.

Pauline is easily my favourite character and the Job seeker sketches are some of the league's funniest work. Even the ad libs in the live shows are amazing "Dick F###ing Whittington". Been looking forward to this episode, and it was so worth it! I've actually watched the Local Shop one three times, I love it- think it's something to do with the combination of old favourite TV and the way you present your videos. @WeeLin
@WeeLin 3 жыл бұрын
Thanks! I love hearing about my old favourite TV shows too (the League has a special nostalgic place in my heart), and I also find myself listening to KZbin channels that present in more of a documentary-style tone, so I thought that'd be a good approach. I thought the dementia storyline, while it still had its laughs, was still treated with the weight and tragedy the topic deserves. At first, I was a bit upset with the way they killed off Pauline, but when I thought about it, leaving her suffering with dementia would feel equally if not more cruel. And Pauline as bi/pansexual always made sense to me. I wonder if this point was actually discussed during the writing, or if it was just the way Steve played her. Maybe Pauline just naturally gave off that energy!

@@WeeLin it’s uncomfortable to be presented with such a heart wrenching subject from what essentially is a dark comedy. Especially when it bleeds in to irreverence. Ricky Gervais does it well. I often thought Pauline and Ross were oddly similar in a number of respects. Both had bullying tendencies. No wonder they ended up in a strange Stockholm Syndrome relationship with each other. I was once a flipchart queen in a training team. (Half -rhyme inadvertant). I can tell you that it was a tough gig, by turns rewarding at times and soul destroying at others. I went from a shy young woman to having steely nerves within the several years that I did it. We at least had more of a dialogue with delegates and flexibility with how we presented things and wrote/edited the course. I am not sure that would have been the case on a Restart/Surestart course. A civil servant who had never spoken publicly in his/her life before probably wrote the course. It certainly wasn't "Pauline" who would have been under the cosh to deliver it as written and for startlingly shite money. I would imagine it would have been fucking depressing for her too. I am wondering if Reece's officer of yore knows the character is based on her....More to the point is Ross based on younger Reece? Did you need a slap, Reece? Lol!

@@WeeLin That's true. Bunty is a pretty old reference - I think my mum maybe used to read that lol she won't thank me for saying that but oh well. Your welcome. Oh and I told my friend (who encouraged me to watch LoG/IN9 etc.) you've done another video - he said 'That girl is good at doing those' so there you go! :) I look forward to the next one on The Dentons too!.

Pauline's sexuality seemingly being retconned and her getting with mickey in series 3 at first felt out of left field and rubbed me the wrong way, as someone who is bisexual and thus is very much aware of the idea of "erasure" by cishet people and lgbtq community alike. I had just naturally assumed the early 2000s sitcom had come from a perspective on lesbians of "haven't found the right man yet". I still don't know how I feel about it but this video helped me understand the setup and context behind that turn a bit more

I know exactly what you mean! It did feel like a weird turn, even for a show as weird as this one. I'm not sure if she was intentionally written as a bisexual character (there weren't all that many around in those days from what I remember), but looking back I couldn't find any instance of Pauline identifying as a lesbian, though she's openly attracted to women and isn't offended by the term. Plus marrying Mickey wouldn't automatically make her straight, because that's not how it works! I just assumed Pauline was bi, which made sense to me, but maybe that's not how other people saw it - as you mentioned, bi-erasure was a very real thing and unfortunately still is. Plus there was that awful "lesbians just need the right man" narrative, which is just shockingly ignorant, and I do hope the gents were never going for that. Thankfully, nothing I found in the commentaries, interviews or other materials seemed to indicate this. Still, it's okay to have mixed feelings on media from two decades ago, even if it's something you enjoy.

Thanks! I think that page is from their "Live Again" tour book - they used to sell copies on their merch website, but they don't seem to have them anymore. Might be worth looking on ebay? There's a lot of good stuff in it, so definitely worth grabbing a copy if you can find one!

Can you do Papa Lazarou and the pandemonium carnival after the Dentons?
@WeeLin
@WeeLin 3 жыл бұрын
You know, I'd been wondering how to do a Papa Lazarou video, because the strange thing is that he's not been features in TLOG that much (he was never in the early sketches or the radio series, and apart from the specials and live shows, he was only ever in two episodes). That, and just about everyone already knows the backstory with Steve and Reece's landlord, so that's not exactly new information. Papa Laz is hilarious to watch, but I didn't think I'd get much material on him. Having said that, I think it'd be a great idea to include the full pandemonium carnival to give it a bit more variety and talk about some other minor characters, so that's definitely an idea. Might not be anytime soon, but I'll add it to the list, cheers!

@WeeLin
@WeeLin 3 жыл бұрын
@@IfIHadMyTimeAgain They really are. I had another horrible thought while researching the Tattsyrups, only the theory didn't quite fit in with the rest of the video. I'd started to wonder about the pig snouts and if the family had been more "involved" with pigs at some point in the past. That got me into thinking of human/animal hybrids, which also got me to Mrs Briss, and wondering just how many of these creations could have ended up in the butcher's window. At that point, I have to wonder if it's my brain that's all wrong, or if the gents have made it this way.
