The coil cars could be used in a facility that uses sheet metal for manufacturing. Like appliances or whatever. You could also have a reefer and a double door or a insulated box car to go at the cold storage they did that also.
@Modelwarshipsdotcom8 ай бұрын
Lots of small manufacturers receive coils for metal stamping. You could even have a metal distributor that cuts coils into sheets and ships them out on flatbed trucks and trailers.

You are in SouCal, you can freelance a team track similar to the former Santa Fe facility at Malabar Yard on the Harbor line. It received loads for several customers that were not directly served by a private spur. Flat car products, steel coil loads, dimensional metal and wood loads, virtually any single load item can be transferred from rail to costomer/drayage service. Malabar team track(s) were very busy in the 90's.

Hey man, been watching your videos for a while and you have an amazing layout compared to my standards. You should make a video on how to get the right supplies and what to get and not get for a layout because I've been struggling for a while. I really need some tips to improve my layout. Keep up the great work man❤

Thank you so much! Yeah, that's a great idea as I've certainly learned many lessons the hard way!

Nice! Love the layout, love the ops, love the casual, informative but not over-detailed narration. One small thing is that the white balance of your footage is all over the place. 22:30 looks about right -- the white trailer in the background looks white. But compare with 21:15, where the white wrap on the lumber load is distinctly orange-brown. Basically the camera doesn't know whether it's looking at white objects in yellow light or yellow objects in white light and sometimes it guesses wrong. If your layout lighting is consistent (i.e., same type of light across the whole thing) then manual white balance is the way to go. Before you start filming, put a piece of copier paper on the layout, photograph it, and use whatever mechanism your camera has to say "this is white". Otherwise (e.g., if parts of your layout are lit by a window and parts aren't), it should be pretty easy to correct the colour balance in post. Again, there should be a thing you can click to say "this part of the image is white" so it adjusts the colour. Really does make a big difference to the final video.

Loved the video, the gentle sounds of an EMD shunting are music to my ears. For what it’s worth, If I was doing the same shunts I think I would have put the lumber cars into the lumber yard first and left the clearance for later. That way the push move to Kimberly Clarke could have been done with a smaller string (just the box to be placed and the pushing platform). If the team track cars and the BASF tanker were left open on the run round the return from KC could drive straight onto them which would have them on the correct end to head back up the branch. I would have grabbed the push platform on the tail of the second run up the branch so you had a push platform for the return. When you get back of the branch the second time you would put the two branch moves together, clear the empty from the lumber mill and head back to the yard. Anyway, still loved the video, look forward to watching the next instalment. Cheers

Nice layout, the details are very well done, i like that you change the autos that are at the crossings. About how big is the main layout? Do you have a track plan a available?

A local off track business, Washington Corrugation, uses a siding at a business close by. They make metal siding and roofing which is moved by trucks to customers. They will bring in a loader to pick roles out of either gondolas or coil cars and are transported to their business site. Happy Railroading.

Your videos are inspiring. I live in the UK and have an end to end switching layout based loosely on the BNSF yard at Fremont. I run early 70's BN and SF stock through to BNSF present day on a contempoary basis. I have weekly switching rotas which I follow on a daily basis on the real life days. .

Thank you very much! Glad you enjoyed the video! I do like the 70's-80's era Santa Fe and Southern Paciific and if I ever start another layout, I think I would choose this era to model. Cheers!

Interesting convo about how many locos to run. This is just an assumption but id bet the prototype runs multiples in case of loco failure too. Especially for me modeling a short line with an aging loco fleet, dont want to get stranded!
@milepost337 ай бұрын
Yes absolutely right! We definitely want to protect against locomotive breakdowns as well have enough HP to get up the 2.5% grade back to the yard. Thanks for the comments and glad you enjoyed the video!

Hi! Great video! An idea - a paper mill is a big plant with multiple tracks. Look at NSModeler24 Josh Clark’s layout for example. For Kimberly Clark you could just use that building as a a receiving/shipping point for the paper mill. Say the paper mill is just off the layout so this building receives delivery for the paper plant and ships material from the plant to the outside world. You have an amazing layout! After all you have the access road that leads to the building. By the way - that’s really cool you live right next to the BNSF line! Where in SoCal are you at?
@beeble20038 ай бұрын
It's not a paper mill. He describes in the video that it receives loaded cars, and you can see rolls of paper in the loading dock. So it appears to be some kind of finishing plant that receives paper rolls and ships out finished products to consumers by road.
