Records show RPM towing has a history of predatory towing. Anthony Spano was involved in a confrontation with the towing company that left the car owner shaken.

A lot of these tow people are crooks. A few years ago, a tow company illegally towed my girlfriends car from her assigned parking spot, damaged her car during tow, broke into her car at the lot, and siphoned the gas from her car. She sued them and won.

Last week I was following a tow truck, he had a car hooked up as he ran over a set of train tracks at full speed. The car bounced up in the air and slammed down on the back end damaging it. The driver never slowed down as he took a hard right up a side street. Loser would probably say it was already damaged.

When I was in the 20 I was living at an apartment and my roommate had his car towed from his own parking spot. Turns our someone had called it to the apartment manager mistaken his spot for theirs. The apartment manger said that my roommate had to settle this with the person who told them it was his spot. The manger never walked out of his office to confirm it was his spot either, he just took his word. The towing/impound fees kept adding up each day and the apartment refused to take responsibility until we contacted the on base lawyer (we were in the Air Force) and he contacted the apartment. Then not only did they pay all the fees, but gave us a month free rent ($1120 value) and apologized. If we didn't have access to a free lawyer on base we would have been screwed.

I'm lucky enough to have a good tow guy in my local area. He's extremely reasonable. Met him once when he waved the storage fee for my ex, when it took a month for her to save up for the tow bill (we were in high school at the time). He changes tires for stranded people on the side of the road for free if he runs into them between tows. I'm a Mechanic as a hobby so I use him 2 or 3 times a year at most, and he only charges me 100-200$ for around town tows. He gave me a heads up once before to move my car from a no-parking zone when they sent him to pick it up. Good man. It does wonders if you can make a good relationship the community, he is cherished and loved in the local area, I send him Christmas gift baskets every year along with the local sheriffs office, police station, and fire station. I think its becoming a lost practice in American culture.

Don't be stupid. A tow company taking your car is not the same as a crackhead hotwiring and driving off with it. Tow companies have some legal authority to remove cars parked illegally and it's not always clear who is in the wrong. There are legal remedies that can be sought at a later time but you don't get to shoot someone who is doing their job that the state has licensed them to do. They abuse their power too, but that doesn't allow you to kill the person.

I lived in an apartment complex many moons ago that had a towing company like this. They were so awful that I STILL remember their name and it's been 20-ish years. They were one of those companies that teamed up with the apartment company in one of those "we'll make rules that can't not be broken, you guys enforce said BS rules, we'll split the profits" kind of deals. Had this happen at an apartment complex years ago, tow company came out and was suppose to tow this old lady's car to a shop to be worked on. Instead they took it back to their lot and tried to charge this lady to get her car out. The owner of the property was notified and gave them hell, told them they will never tow a car from this lot again if they don't return the car and that he notified his lawyer and will have them arrested for grand theft as they were given specific instruction as to where to take the car and basicly stole it instead. That company gave the old lady hell, but once someone with the power to hold them accountable came into the picture they were suddenly super cooperative. Had my work van parked outside of walmart once (doing some repairs there.) Most vendors/contractors park on the side, kind of by the fire lane at this particular walmart. I had a tow truck driver attempt say I can't park there, that i need to move or I'll be towed. I asked him who told him i couldn't park there and he went off on some kind of unhinged rant as if he was the god of parkinglots. I told him why don't we ask the manager. So I did, manager was right up front so that worked out. He laid into the man over harrasing his vendors and ran him off. That manager was a solid dude. Had a buddy of mine as well who had his truck towed for having his tire "touching" the grass. They tried to say it was on the grass but the camera said otherwise so they brought his truck back and apologized, apologies not accepted however. We have a few tow companies locally that have horrible reputations. There use to be a popular bumper sticker around town that quite a few folks had, it said not to call (insert towing companies name, I won't name names.) When you privately call a tow truck company for your own need they're nice as can be, it's those shady fuckers out here looking for someone to tow you gotta watch out for.

I owned a repossession/impound company. This is completely unprofessional and illegal. We never treated an automobile owner like this. We used uniforms, were polite, and never lifted a car with a person inside. Their insurance company would never cover them acting like this if they knew about it.

Back several years ago we were listening to the police scanner when a massive snow storm was setting in. We apparently had the frequencies for some of the tow truck dispatch radios because when the city declared a snow emergency and said certain roads needed to be cleared of parked vehicles we heard the drivers call it "free money" because they didn't have to knock on doors or anything to warn people they were about to be towed. Thankfully we had cops come by and warn us beforehand but many others, in a poorer area of town, weren't so lucky.

Haven't met too many of them, have you? I worked for a tow company that if you even raised your voice at a customer, you could be fired. If you damaged the car during the tow, you fixed it. When the owner retired, he offered me the business. I decided not to because I didn't want to go into that much debt at that time in my life. There area lot more reputable tow companies than crooked ones. Just look for the ones who aren't in the news all the time.

I remember maybe 2 where the driver treated me like a normal person, and this was out of several dozens of experiences. I’ve also observed them do horrible stuff to people’s vehicles, illegally tow, drag AWD down the street, and the list goes on. Same issue when I’ve dealt with them in my personal life, 1 good experience and the remainder were horrible. One company towed my car after an expired meter and stole my JL Audio subwoofer and Amp, $1500 bucks. Owner says they have a policy that they aren’t responsible for stolen items at their yard, what a f’n racket. Good for that company but that isn’t the norm. That whole industry needs way more oversight and accountability.

When something like this happens make sure to get it on video, as soon as the tow truck leaves the property call 911 and report your car stolen and let 911 know you have the theft on video. The tow driver will be charged with grandtheft auto and the tow company will also be charged and could very well lose it's license for good.
