11:55 "You need some kind of grammar engine." Made me smile, because that's exactly what our company is working on and distributing - even under the term "Grammar Engine", simply because we were also sick of exactly these issues.👍 And French is still rather calm there, try it with German, we Germans love to change word endings and articles based on gender, grammatical case, etc. :)

2:03 It's like that old saying "nobody is a prophet in his own land". A good example of this is when sales of an eroge skyrocketed because a Spanish youtuber mentioned it in a video (or at least that's what they say, since I couldn't find anything to confirm that). 9:50 I think Cataclysm DDA has a system that handles that more or less well. If you look at the .po files of the translations you can see that some phrases, besides the typical msgid and msgstr, also have things like msgid_plural and msgstr[0], msgstr[1], msgstr[2] and so on (I don't remember if there was also something similar for gender). 12:04 In fact the translation project became quite active since the Steam version was released. Still it's true that the only way to translate the game well would be to add a library with "grammar engines" for each language.

Great! I'm passing through it right now - it's a pain! But excellent video as always

Yeah, now I see where it can go if localization isn't taken care of at the start of the project. I was kinda putting that at the side to learn localization. I'm learning game development and Godot but now as I'm prepping to start to make a serious game. Thanks to your suggestion I made a game template that has localization taken care of.

I came here searching for translation for DF kkkkkk amazing video btw. My first language isn't english, i was trying to translate some texts that i found in DF, sometimes it's get pretty hard cause of the grammar, in portuguese every noun has a gender (sometimes implicity sometimes explicity) and it can create weird phrases cause DF generates names randomly

Just a friendly heads-up on pronunciation. Your English is outstanding, so please don't take this is as a negative criticism ^_^ "parameter" is puh-RAM-uh-tur (or -dur, depending on how a person hits their t's) not para-METER. The first, third, and fourth vowel sounds are the schwa.

I was going to suggest you switch to gettext as you mentioned in the previous video, but it looks like one of it's coolest features isn't supported: automatic extracting of source strings. In Ruby, I just run a script to generate a file that maps translatable English strings to that of another language (Japanese in my case). No copying and pasting needed, and I'm sure that my translation file represents the current state of my app. Shame that isn't supported with godot.

Hey Paul :). Yeah and the doc talks about pluralization not being supported which would have helped too. Maybe in a future Godot version it'll be worth passing to GetText but not now.
