So for people wondering why some of the mechs in the demo have access to double heat sinks, it’s because of the campaign timeline. It’s starts in 3015 a time when people didn’t know how double heat sinks worked much less how to mass produce them. Some of the great houses had research projects dedicated to rediscovering them and by the early ‘20s had some prototypes. Nevertheless running into an individual mech with dhs was like running into an animal believed to be extinct. However the campaign is said to extend up to 3049, two decades after the dhs was rediscovered and mass production could begin again. I believe their limited use in the demo is just to show the player base that they’re in the game, and so we can see their effectiveness.

Thanks for the video. It showed exactly what I wanted to see! There is more I want to know, but we are hitting the limitations of what you can do in the demo. Here are some of the things I still wonder about, though I’m not sure if you can test them in the demo: Is back-shotting big, slow mechs viable? They seem more agile, especially in terms of torso twist, than MWO. Are there alternate vision modes? Seismic? Is it viable to keep stock armor levels, or do you really need to max out like in MWO? Can you mix single and double heat sinks? Are light mechs fast enough to evade LRMs in a useful way, or are the LRMs too agile? Tag? NARC? Do they exist and do anything useful? Given how fragile they are, can you use buildings and trees as cover? I’m very curious about the repair economy, and how much mechlab customization will affect the campaign. Also, I have a few comments about what I have seen so far: Buildings are too easy to walk through. The armor part of the damage silhouettes is too thin. It is hard to tell at a glance anything other than it is red or not red. Vehicles seem too easy to kill. They don’t need to be as tough as mech, but not one-shot either. Having parts of the paper doll flash when hit becomes overwhelming when a brawl is going on, or a stream of missiles is hitting. The flashing ends up hiding just how much damage is being done. Torso speed on assaults and heavies might be a little too fast. Getting hit with a PPC seems like it should break or at least interrupt missile locks. I miss the weapon group pips next to the reticle in MWO that would change color when one of the weapons in the group was in range. That was much more effective than having to look at the weapon display in the bottom right, or trying to watch the range finder. I’m sure I’ll think of more, but that is what I’ve got for now!
@ShatteredAce5 жыл бұрын
From my experience here: 1. Yeah, it can work. I did a locust challenge on the assassination mission, and I could duck a lot of damage and do hit and run attacks without being hit by the mech. 2. Not sure, probably not. 3. You can keep stock armor, sometimes it matters, but usually it doesn't. 4. Not sure, in the demo right now we can only take the heat sinks available in the mech. Most are single, only a couple are doubles. We'll know in the full game 5. I can duck most LRM's in a light. However, if you have helicopters overhead firing at you too, dodging them all is kinda hard. 6. TAG and NARC are in the game, but I haven't used them yet. 7. Buildings yes, trees....Probably not. 8. Same here, I'm really questioning if the mechlab we see if the final variant. I know baradul has asked this too, but the more I think about it the more I swear we aren't seeing everything.

Y'know The 'lost tech' part of Battletech has a few problems for me. Ok not having the tech to make super fancy armors and intense ECM suites makes sense. Forgetting how to build a GD refrigerator(which is all a heat sink is) and basic radar scrambling devices, while utilising radar, and having FTL? Come on. At some point my suspense of disbelief hits a hard no.
@danilooliveira65805 жыл бұрын
@@apatheticjesus4147 we don't know how complex is double heatsinks, maybe it uses materials and designs that they don't have access to. radar scrambling is not easy though, it something that is still reserved to the most advanced war planes we have today, and they don't hide the plane like ECMs do. and they have no idea how FTL works, they just hope the jumpships don't break. only comstar knows how to fix those things. the idea of lostech is purely balancing, its because some techs are clearly better than others, so either they make some tech ridiculously expensive for whatever reason, make old tech reserved to super cheap design and expensive tech common, or they say they are almost impossible to find, and having one is like finding Excalibur.
@apatheticjesus41475 жыл бұрын
@@danilooliveira6580I get that lost tech is a balancing mechanism for the tabletop. But as for just being a fanciful universe in which to tell a story, some of it just gets a 'hard no' from my imagination. Which I can assure you is quite expansive. I can buy a radar scrambler at Walmart. The wide spread use of radar suggests that there is a good understanding of the technology in universe; ergo ECM should be well understood. Granted there are levels of ECM/radar capability. That's why low level ECM in universe makes sense. But, ECM is not stealth, and even stealth in universe does not make the 'Mech invisible. I get that jumpships are heirlooms, same as the majority of 'Mechs. But reverse engineering is a thing. Yes, some material science may have been lost, but the pieces of the puzzle are there. With how much the different houses are trying to one up each other, one would think they'd be putting more effort into tech development and reverse engineering the stuff they don't understand. And at this point IRL refrigeration is about as mature a technology as it's going to get. It's not a complicated thing. (Whoever wrote the Sarna wiki is a bit off in their understanding of what a heat pump is and how they work, by my estimation).So double heatsinks are b.s. to me. If they didn't take up more space while somehow not weighing more than single heat sink, then I'd let them slide. Except then they'd have to be magic so I would have a whole other problem with them. But I get it as a balancing mechanism, but only on tabletop. I think Battletech is a great universe and I really enjoy the majority of it. But there are some parts I can't not call out. Don't get me started on Kerensky and the Clans (space Nazis). MF could have stopped all the war he wanted to avoid if he'd just stepped up and taken control of the Star League.
@danilooliveira65805 жыл бұрын
@@apatheticjesus4147 but they are, there are places focused on recovering lostech, like New Avalon Institute of Science. but most of what they recover is experimental or reserved. it was just when they found the memory core that everyone could understand and learn how to reproduce star league technology. you have to remember that the succession wars reduced the knowledge back to the middle ages. they had the equipment, but had no idea how any of it worked or were made, at most they knew how to hammer it back into shape. it would be like giving a smartphone to a WW1 scientist, he may know the logic behind it, how to fix it when a wire gets loose, but he knows almost nothing of what makes a smartphone, he doesn't know half of the materials used in it, he doesn't know how a microprocessor work, he doesn't even have the technology to figure out what a microprocessor even is. he may reproduce it with materials and technology that he has at his disposal, but it won't be the same. its not that easy to retro-engineer something that you don't know almost anything about. and about the double heatsinks, its hard for you to accept it because you are assuming its just a heatpump or a normal heatsink. but we really have no idea of how it even work, it might as well be magic for all we know. so just imagine it to be made from alien composites and quantum technology and it will be easier to digest. remember that they don't work the same way heat sinks work, they can cool the mech even in an environment hotter than the interior of the mech.

Well to me SRM (Short Ranged MISSILES) should be and is a lock on weapon. In MWO SRMs are used as rockets. A missile is a GUIDED weapon, it's in the definition of missile. To those that believe the SSRM is the guided system wrong, SRMs where always guided. Look at previous MW games and the lore in Battletech. SSRM offers a faster locking with a missile (Swarm) that has a faster flight time and tighter hit pattern. And the primary function is that unlike normal SRMs can only be fired if a LOCK is acquired. This feature is save ammo. Normal SRMs can be dead fired since the missiles are armed in the bay. As for LRMs the most nerfed weapon in the game, a larger targeting rectul for LRMs would be great!
@richardlayton71845 жыл бұрын
Oh and SRMS should have the same range as Medium Lasers.
@gfarrell805 жыл бұрын
Technically any object projected through the air can be called a 'missile'. An arrow fired from a bow is a missile, a hurled stone is a missile. A 16 inch naval canon shell is also a missile. There's only a fuzzy gray area in the 2nd half of the 20th century when we started inventing guided missiles and ballistic missiles. Is an ICBM a rocket or a missile? It's both. If you want to be absolutely safe, just add 'guided' before missile when you're talking about a weapon that can self-correct in flight.
@domongart93315 жыл бұрын
Good point about the SRMs. On Sarana you can read that both SRMs and LRMs were guided, and MRMs were the dumb-fire missiles. An entry on Dead-Fire Missiles explains that the Draconis combine experimented with LRMs and SRMs with guidance removed and larger warheads, but those were superceded by standard MRMs. I guess when you're making the video game you want to differentiate between Streaks and SRMs. They *could* do this with SRMs firing in a cloud, capable of dumb-fire, and a wider spread by default, so Artemis is useful. The streaks then would follow the description in Sarna, and be impossible to fire without a proper lock, and come in a tigher stream, very few of them missing, if at all. In this way SRMs would be very much like regular LRMs, and Streaks would be like SRM + Stream + Artemis, but incapable of being fired without the lock.

I get that it's based on Battletech lore and tech, but it's interesting to me that LRM's really aren't long range missiles by current weapons standards. An AMRAAM, or Advanced Medium-Range Air-to-Air Missile is capable of engaging targets 30-50km away. Even a Javelin man portable missile launcher is capable of engaging targets at 2.5km, with an MLRS being able to engage out to 70km. Compare that to the LRM's here, that have an effective engagement distance inside 1km, and aren't even individually guided, so they really just impact as a barrage, and it just seems ineffective. On one hand you have these massive walking behemoths that are armed to the teeth with lasers, particle cannons, gauss cannons, and missiles, being dropped off by huge spacecraft and supported by infantry, tanks, and air vehicles. On the other, you have missile technology that seems to be stuck in the 1960s-1970s. Just gotta suspend disbelief, lol.

Well, most modern weaponry has way longer ranges than Battletech's analogs: machine guns up to 2 km, artillery - around 50 km, electromagnetic cannon prototypes - over 10 km (data murky on that one), laser weapon prototypes - as long as you have visibility. Shortening ranges is just necessary to avoid hour-long slogs over 10000 square km battle theatres. So mostly gotta accept gameplay concessions, but suspending disbelief works as well.
@Guardian1795 жыл бұрын
@@cyberdystopia6029 For sure. It was just funny to me that something termed long range missiles can't even be effectively employed at distances a precision rifle or machine gun can be today. We're piloting machines that are 100+ meters tall in some cases. By having even your 'long range' engagements happen within 1000m, you are pretty much turning every fight into a knife fight. It really keeps something like the catapult or other generally ranged mechs from being more effective, since smaller mechs can close inside their effective distance relatively quickly. It also takes away from the idea of having a coordinated lance, where a scout mech is running good sensors ahead of the long range mechs, allowing for accurate, long range, indirect fire. You are pretty much always within visual range of your targets from what I've seen.
@Guardian1795 жыл бұрын
@@cyberdystopia6029 I will also concede that I was remembering engagements in MW2 and MW4 feeling longer, but really they weren't, after watching some videos. Still, the tactician in me likes the idea of more specialization that would be given through extending the range on some weapons in a realistic manner.
@cyberdystopia60295 жыл бұрын
@@Guardian179 Well, IIRC MW4 had a beacon that sticks to a target and redirects LRMs to it, also commands meny allows for some tactical decisionmaking, but if you want real working specialisation that ain't happening in a real-time format. BattleTech (2018) is decent for tactical options even if ranges are still compressed.

@@cyberdystopia6029 playing Battletech currently in anticipation of MW5. Don't get me wrong, I'm stoked that Mech Warrior is coming back. One of my favorite series. I was just taking a little bit of a critical look at the terminology of calling missiles that are effective at 900m long range. More of an innocent poke than a true critique.

Hate the way the missiles launch as a batch instead of a stream as they do in Battletech. They look so much more impressive when they impact, one after another than when they do all at once.

Did you not notice that that's an option? He had 2 LRM20 (the batch firing ones) and 2 stream LRM15 (they fire in, well, a stream).

Think streams technically shoot slower as they don’t begin to recycle their fire time until the end of the stream..... but they looks cooler so meh

I find it incredibly fucking stupid that you can't fire while in minimum range. If you make a mistake and fire under range, that should be a pilot error. Plus, you could fire at something running away from you while in min range and by the time the missiles hit, they could be in range. What an absolutely infuriating "feature". Can't wait for modding.

This game is more like an RPG, in the campaign AI will scale from easy to hard. Probably the demo is set to easy AI, it's a fun sandbox reward for loyal community members.
@kedolan49925 жыл бұрын
I mean, you did notice when he was setting the AI for his team, there were something like 6 levels? I wouldn't be surprised if the demo went out with enemies set to only 1-3 or something, since it's really more of a "proof of concept" type demo, than an actual demo of the full game.

Find it sad that somehow enemies are so weak and die like paper. After playing Dark Souls and even MWO... Seeing Baradul destroy everything with ease is .... seems like a step backward. Are the enemies sending in paper armored mechs? Are they too poor to add real armor? Also are the enemies mechs being piloted by babies??? Also NERF LRMs! Hate LRMs since 2013 and still do.

There is absolutely no reason for LRMs to require the pointing of the mech's reticle on the enemy. I don't understand why nobody talks about this. LRMs should just fire automatically at your targeted enemy without any of this utter nonsense of 'holding a lock'.
