LOCK REMOVAL AND RE-CODING BMW R1200 & R1250 GSA PANNIERS AND TOP BOX

Magic. Just sold a 850gsa and part X for a 1250GSA. Forgot to sort out locks first. Managed to get emergency key back off Dealer and have just recoded all 8 locks. Best video on You Tube. Spot on. Very happy bunny!!!

Thank you for taking the time to show the added detail. I was switching the locks from a scratched pannier from a deer encounter to the new one. The release pin wasn’t showing in the old locks so I ended up following your lead to press on the left side and was able to get all three out and installed in the new one.

Thank you for a great video! It is possible to get the cylinders out even without the matching key. As long as the lock is open, but then with the cylinder in locked position. You can take a thin feeling gauge, 0.10mm, and fiddle around from the backside. Then lift the pin and push cylinder out with a pair of pliers or something like that. 👍

What Sunseeker said but I was able to get the lock for the lid out with a right angled dental pick and a little patients. It would be soooo much easier with the key but you can do it.

Hi. You do some nice video's, thanks! But the info about taking off the lock without a key is wrong. I was looking on KZbin for this kind of info has my local BMW bike shop here in Sweden wanted over 2'000 kr (about £170) to fix it and set new locks in! Others videos showed you how to do it with the right tool (of which I don't have). So your video was a good starting point for me, so thanks. I sold my GSA last year but I kept my cases. I made sure that my cases and top box were all open before I gave the keys over (but the locks itself are locked of cause to get the key out) has both keys go with the bike etc. But what did work for me was that after seeing your video and others on KZbin. I went inside of the cases and unscrewed the 4 screws that held the lock to the side of the case. Once the lock was off. It was so easy to get to that little lock pin and push it down with a knife. It took seconds! I even forgot to unlock one lock, and that came out easy also! So thanks again!

Yes like other thanks for that. It would be nice if they color coded the wafers. When I do mine, I will clean them of grease and mark them with color sharpies. BTW I get the top bunk

Hi. Came across your excellent video while searching for information on the pannier locks. This may be a stupid question....but I'll ask anyway!!! Can you use the cylinder locks WITHOUT using any of the "tumblers"/"wafers" ?? i.e. you could then use ANY BMW key to lock/unlock the panniers.

Good video. So I have 2017 gsa 1200. My question is my side hard cases are coded to my main bmw key but my top case has its own different key, so if I pull the barell out from top case that is not matched and do what you just explained me and you did good job , any who I pulled it out and match it like you did it will work with original key ?

Great video ! but boy oh ! boy what have I done ! Earlier today I bought a Vario Top Box on Ebay and never assumed recoding would be so difficult. I am just assuming that the lock will be locked so are you saying that without the key I will not be able to remove the barrel.

When unlocked, the Vario cases can still be used. Yes, you can remove the barrel without the key, just be careful the wafers and springs don't fly out. When a key is inserted it holds the wafers and springs in place. I use a dab of grease over each spring hole when trying different wafers, the grease holds the springs and wafers in place.

Just had my Vario case barrels re-keyed to my ignition key by a local locksmith. All seemed fine, the wafers were all retracting when the key was inserted, but when I mounted the barrel back into the case, I can now no longer remove the key from the barrel. Yet when the barrel is NOT mounted in the case, the key comes out of the barrel fine. It's got me stumped.

Did u get get an issue getting the BMW key inside the lock cylinder without any ‘wafers’ I purchased brand new key cylinders for F900XR’s side panniers. However when I try to insert the bike key it does not go in- there seems to be a horizontal pin which is stopping the key to go in :(

I have the three BMW panniers, the key works fine in the sides and the seat release, but I managed once to open the top pannier. I cannot remove it from my bike, naturally I don't want to force it, should I try graphite first ?

Sweet, where do you live ? Locksmith 101, you are a very personable fellow inmate, what are you in for again ? Years ago as assistant manager at a building material complex the manager and I were taught by the Lockwood rep to key alike house locksets for the builders, not very different to your skill. Thanks heaps for your time and effort in showing us the basics, I gather you have some way to go before retirement, and as you wear glasses can I make a suggestion, if you are in your own home. My workshop is 24' x 15', and the adjoining carport is 30' x 14', I needed good lights at the ' suggestion ' of my daughter-in-law, so bought 9 x 40w x 4' LED battens to replace two useless old fluoros in the carport. WOW !! So in my workshop I installed 4 x 90w x 4' LED battens, an additional one over the metal work bench, and one in a movable overhead cowling. It makes a stunning difference to using all facets of my workshop, except for the drumkit. Now as a retired 66yo Treelopper I love to sit there listening to music, with a beer in hand, and look at my recent purchase of my BMW R1200RS, something I had to wait my whole adult life for, glistening in the light.
