I had my first slow-dance at age Eleven, to this song, with a cute French Canadian girl at Summer camp. It is still vivid in my memory. Notice the amazing backing harmonies, written and arranged by the guitarist, bassist and drummer. Elton and producer Gus Dudgeon always trusted them to do a tasty, emotional job.

This has always been my favourite Elton/Taupin song for me the whole arrangement with Taupins lyrics and Elton performing it is pure magic👍

Not ashamed to admit it, but cry every time I hear this - had a girl break up with me in high school and this was playing! That was 40 years ago and it still gets me. Loved the George Michael version as well with both of them singing! Keep up the great reactions and stay safe!

Out of all Elton John's songs, (and I know we're talking about a ton of material here), this is the one that I remember in my mind, the one I sing, the one that chokes me up, the one I cannot let go. It is a masterpiece......heard it now for 45 years and still goosebumps....ok...Thanks Enoma.

Good take on not needing all the flamboyant costumes and the multiple custom made (diamond studded even...whew!) eyeglasses.....but that was so much his image, and the world loved it. An amazing time.:)

Of course this was the original version, written by Elton John and Bernie Taupin in 1974. God bless you both for reacting to it. It is a very special song.

@@callumcowan7047 Yup, Bernie wrote lyrics, and passed them to Elton. Elton, then put music to them and sang them. Amazing songs, considering they did it all separately :)

i think elton john was the best live concert i have ever seen. he appeared in foxboro stadium home of the new england patriots on 07/04/1976-the bicentennial celebration of the united states.he played for over 3 hours and came out dressed in a sequinned red white and blue uncle sam suit with his trademark shorts with a tall stovepipe hat.i was 23 at the time and will treasure that moment in time as long as i live. unfortunately no video or recorded material is available from the concert which is really a shame.the only song he did not play was 'daniel' and strangely enough when my buddy and i got back to the car we turned on the radio and what was the first song that came on? daniel!! true story!long live elton and bernie

If you'll notice, Goerge Micheal did not make it "his own" so to speak he kept the arrangements exactly as Elton had them, this song is all Elton's genius. I always preferred this version by far, but then again both versions were great, I just grew up on this in the 70s. To make a song your own you have to do it somewhat different or you are just singing karaoke. Like Ryan Adams did with Wonderwall, now that is making a song your own.
