I know the 2 of you also love Billy Joel. Did you know that Billy and Elton toured together for a few years? The show opened with both of them playing seperate pianos Face to Face which was the name of the tour. I know YOUR SONG was first and then I think it was Honesty next. After 4 songs one would leave and the other would play solo for a couple hours. Then they would switch. Part of the show was doing eachothers songs and Billy did this during his set. Piano man with the 2 of them was obviously amazing!! So lucky I got to see it twice!! You can find a lot of the video on youtube Sorry to write so much Love your channel

Possibly they aren't aware what an institution that movie has been in the US for so long. Not sure about other countries, but I'm fairly old, and that movie has been replayed every year since I can remember, even back when there was only three or four channels of television. It's more than a classic, it's an amazing immortal movie, especially memorable to kids who grew up before special effects became so realistic and spectacular as they are today. It left a very distinct lifelong impression on many of us over the years.

The lyric writer, Bernie Taupin, was a country boy. I always felt that this song was his way of expressing his longing for the quieter life he led before he and Elton's skyrocketing to fame. This album was a double album set and a huge undertaking for the band as a whole. I can only imagine how intense those days must have been. Not to mention the touring that followed. Great song choice!

Bernie Taupin, who wrote the lyrics for this song(as well as for nearly all Elton's songs)said there was a message in the song from him about how he missed the rural life(he was raised on a farm)and wasn't totally comfortable with all the "Glitz and glamor" associated with his successful partnership with Elton. He loved America and bought a ranch in California as a semi-retreat from that particular "Hollywood" lifestyle.

This is one of their autobiographical songs. Elton was treated like a tasty morsel by some of the big executives in the music biz, but he and Bernie resisted selling their souls for the "glittering prizes" (in the words of Neil Peart of Rush). As well, it describes how tempting it was for Bernie to retreat "back to the farm" where he was raised in joyous solitude.

Elton John and Bernie Taupin wrote the song Honky Cat in 1972. It's about a guy from the country who's really happy that he's gone to the city, even though all his friends told him he shouldn't. A year later they wrote Goodbye Yellow Brick Road, which is about a guy who regrets going to the city and is moving back to the country.

Wore this album out in the Fall of '73. Happy you chose to react to this one. I always thought 'Yellow Brick Road' was a reference to 'Wizard of Oz'. And a futile effort to find something great at the end. What we have is within us.

Good observation, Kirti. I hadn’t noticed that in this song before. I hear a little bit of The Long and Winding Road. Of course the Beatles influence is everywhere, even today.

This has always been my favorite Elton John song. As I became an adult and engaged in the world on a broader level, I too wanted to return to a simpler life in the country, on the farm, surrounded by the natural world, including the animal people. Great reactions, Kirti and Savio. ~ Duane

Hi guys, just some comments about Goodbye Yellow Brick Road to fill you in a little bit about it’s meaning. It is referring to the movie “The Wizard of Oz”. In that movie they were following the yellow brick road to Oz to find the wizard and see if he could help Dorothy, the tin man, the cowardly lion and the scarecrow get back home to Kansas and the farm. So he is saying they are saying goodbye yellow brick road because they are leaving Oz and going back home to the farm.

In the movie The Wizard of Oz, the yellow brick road leads to the Emerald City where the the main characters will find the answers to their questions. You need to watch that movie (one of the greatest ever IMO) to see what happens!

Another take on "The yellow brick road" The story of the yellow brick road is a metaphor for the human wish of a definitive path in life...Hero's, God's and Guru's are the answer to escaping suffering...The story goes that, if you want to lessen the burden of life, there will be some magical savior that will come along and show you the way to easy street. That the hero will come along and save us from our misery or trouble...That there is some magical sky beings that, if you just believe in them, will make our lives better somehow...Bernie Taupin is saying that he wants out of the illusion he was being sold about fame and fortune, and he rejects that whole notion that this life of living with the "Beautiful People is where it is at, and he finds it phoney...El Dorado,, the rich nations and those others stories about the streets being paved with gold is merely a way of saying that the grass is much greener on the other side of the fence.

Bernie Taupin wrote the lyrics to this and most of Elton's other songs. He often seems to write about Elton, but this one appears to be about himself. The lyrics are about giving up a life of opulence for one of simplicity in a rural setting. Elton has enjoyed a very extravagant lifestyle, while Taupin prefers to keep it low key. Speaking about the song, Taupin said: "It's funny, but there are songs that I recall writing as if it was yesterday. And then there are those I have absolutely no recollection of, whatsoever. In fact, I'd have to say that for the most part, if someone was to say that the entire Yellow Brick Road album was actually written by someone else, I might be inclined to believe them. I remember being there, just not physically creating. There was a period when I was going through that whole 'got to get back to my roots' thing, which spawned a lot of like-minded songs in the early days, this being one of them. I don't believe I was ever turning my back on success or saying I didn't want it. I just don't believe I was ever that naïve. I think I was just hoping that maybe there was a happy medium way to exist successfully in a more tranquil setting. My only naiveté, I guess, was believing I could do it so early on. I had to travel a long road and visit the school of hard knocks before I could come even close to achieving that goal. So, thank God I can say quite categorically that I am home."

Elton John can write music for the telephone book... A yellow brick road (wizard of oz) is the path of exploration that we must travel to discover our strengths, which we likely always had even though we may have had doubts. It could also be considered an ill path towards a perceived high goal, but an ultimately false one.

Every song on this double album works as part of a rock cabaret-inflected social critique, with the upshot being disillusionment with glossy society.
