Hey Lucy! Not a PhD student but I am an EarthSci Oxford undergrad and it was really encouraging watching this video. I'm struggling to keep to any kind of work-day structure, especially since I share a bedroom with my 7-year-old sister and there are 6 other people in the house making for all sorts of distractions. It's frustrating too when I do find quiet time but feel too unmotivated by the lack of pressure from being outside of the academic world of Oxford. So, watching your video has been really encouraging, I already felt there were various non-academic benefits to lockdown, like you said, exercise being one of them but I've neglected to see the academic benefits, so thank you!

Great video!! More doctoral students need to see this!! The lockdown has given us the one thing that we complain about not having.....time. I am not complaining; the lockdown has given me motivation to finish sooner. Thanks again!! 😁❤️

I absolutely agree! I am currently preparing for my qualifying exams next month, so I am grateful to have this time to just READ and enjoy the material! Maybe I'm a masochist, but I'm having a great time progressing through my assigned reading lists and doing practice writing without being interrupted!

Hey! Great video! Since I started my PhD(one and a half year), I had never really been able to make the time to read the literature that I should be reading..was lagging behind! Lockdown helped me catch up! Not only did I read, I wrote reports, designed experiments and much more❤️ thanks for all the positivity!

I think as a PhD student no matter what year you are in, it's a great time to catch up on reading papers and write!

I work more effective than in office, it is time to write up ;). Luckily, I have finished all my experiment 2 days before lockdown. Hope everything will better soon.

Hey Lucy! Love your videos! Could you please make a video shedding some light on types of extra curricular activities a PhD student can do! E.g. Participating in conferences etc.

It's bad for me because I'm about to get my progression board in the first year, but I know that my classroom-based data will not be available for me to collect after that cause all the schools are shut down at the moment.......... damn.... hope things will get better soon. :(

I'm exercising now about 3x as before covid. Unfortunately, I am still distracted from my work (~70% down). But I am happy not to have to go to campus.

There are definitely upsides! I have been able to attend all my classes in my bed! Also, I have been much more productive with my reading. My family bonding has increased as well. Also what do you mean you're allowed to exercise once a day in the UK???? Why can't you exercise twice?

I am hoping to get into a graduate program in the next year and a half but if this goes too long, I am afraid there will be no money for me to go. I really am worried about it.

Try the "calm" meditation app, you can get lots of natural sounds for free and I set a 15 minutes open ended meditation timer while I'm studying, so I know when to stretch my body and not harming myself, pretty handy.

I’m worried now that you’re graduating. I need this podcast to do my PhD. Don’t end it. May be rename it? May be you will keep on telling us stories. Until you become postdoc, faculty and beyond.
