So there we have it then! The Vitesse is motoring around and she looks fantastic doing so, I wish I could keep her but I need to fund that monstrous Capri build so one of you lucky people can take the Vitesse to the next step instead and give it that extra bit of love it needs to be a really special car.

Someone’s already said, but you need to sort that fuse out that’s got the fuse wire behind it. If you put a 30A fuse on top of a piece of 30A fuse wire, you now have the equivalent of a 60A fuse in that position, which is only slightly safer than putting a nail in it.

The first thing to do on a triumph straight six is fit a spin on oil filter conversion kit, The original oil filter assembly drains the oil back as it has no oil return valve. Every time you start it will take like 10 seconds for the oil light to extinguish as it has to prime the oil filter bowl thus putting more wear on the engine 👍 Having now watched the full video the gearbox is knackered, The Vitesse used an up graded Herald box but it was not up to the job.

My first car was a Triumph Vitesse WAR 153E plenty of power from those 6 cylinders. I do know that the rear welding underneath where the rear stabilisers meet the short chassis cross member was due to a weak point when putting your foot down causing the break. Happened to me twice and was like driving a crab when you put your foot down as the axle would move. Great classic little car 👍

There is a coolant drain plug at the rear right side of the engine block at the bottom. These straight six engines like to collect a layer of silt there. It's a great place to flush the block from. Also the rad is supposed to have a cowling around it to direct the airflow. It really affects cooling above 40mph. Car looks great and I've put a punt on in the raffle 🤞

I do have to say though I cringe when you use a grinder with no eye protection....I've worked in engineering all my life and getting a spark in the eye isn't any fun, especially having to go to the eye infirmary where they will remove it with a needle!!😮😮😮....in the worst case you could get blinded in your eye. Even in the late 80s when I was an apprentice, grinding without eye protection would of gotten you the sack!!!...honestly m8 , you only get one pair of eyes.....apart from that , keep up the very very good work 😊😊😊

If I remember correctly, there is a little lever low down on the petrol tank, which allows you to switch to a lower lever of pickup to act as a reserve level of petrol. I wonder if this one has that feature ? Of course you had to remember to switch it back when you fill up , otherwise you are running on the low level all the time. It must have been designed in expecting that the fuel gauge would fail at some time.

I had an early vitesse back in the early 1970s.It was the 1600 engine without an oil cooler(which was on the later 2 litre engine). It had an oil pressure gauge and i drove it on the new M3 from Farnborough to Basingstoke.Oil pressure dropped to about 25 psi. There were several handling mods.Take off the rear leaf spring and turn over mid 2 leaves. This lowers it and gives slight negative rake.Front wishbones with thin spacers give similar rake on front.I replaced the gearbox with a recon one.Quite easy taking the cover off in the cabin.

What a beautiful day to take the Triumph Herald Vitesse out for the first time in 40 years. It’s dripping in 1960s British charm. My step mum had one in red, a convertible, with a cream top, iirc. I don’t know if it was a Vitesse or just a four cylinder Herald. I don’t remember ever being driven in it. Perhaps she hardly used it. She was an old fashioned, stay at home mum. I was pretty young (b. 1960) & she’s not around to ask. My family didn’t do photo albums. My wife does, so our grandchildren will be able to look back to before they were born.

It is a “great little car”. My father had a 1275 Herald estate and on occasion when it visited the garage he was lent a Vitesse as a courtesy car. If both temp and fuel gauge aren’t working it could be the instrument voltage regulator at fault. Also for clearing blocked cooling systems try sulphamic acid (NOT sulphuric acid which sounds similar but strangely isn’t) - it looks like sugar but don’t put it in your tea. Dissolves all calcium deposits and is the most effective coolant flush I’ve ever used.

I have really enjoyed this little car. Its the same year as me and has been off the road the same length of time as I have had my license. So glad you are restoring this sensibly. I cannot stand people who use words like concourse and pour time and money into a car they are afraid to use. This was a boy racer car in its early days and has picked up the Carlos Fandango wing mirrors and air scoop that were common in the mid 1970's. My Dad had one which was a convertible which he kept for a week before selling it. On the plus side he replaced it with a Beetle built in 1959 which was green, had three orange wings and was called Herbie in our family. The fueling appealed more to my Dads not liking petrol stations. Over a quid for a gallon of petrol in 1977! I will buy a ticket as love Spits and Heralds and that engine sounds so sweet. Just as an aside. I have pulled out those Borg Warner overdrive gearboxes and put them in kit cars. Please make sure the box and diff have fresh oil and new seals as they don't last long if run low and the overdrive can be wrecked quickly.

oh that takes me back, mum had a sky blue Herald, the first car I remember. She was a teacher, we used to spend our holidays in a caravan in the dales, taking our cat. One summer, on the last day, he went missing but we had to go home. Once there he miraculously appeared, covered in oil. We think he must have done the entire journey on those massive wheel arches under the bonnet

Watching this video on a Saturday morning, thinking what could be better.. and then Bam I get an email saying the grand tour season six is up.. get in.. 👍🏻 great video mate. After watching it you’d never guess, don’t they have a 3ltr ford capri in the episode. How gas is that! 👍🏻

I was wondering whether you'd fit an alternator to replace the dynamo, glad I stuck with the video. Surprisingly easy to watch, very few other channels can hold my attention for 2+ hours.

My father used to take dynamo apart.clean lube grease as needed. Then fine emery tape strip would clean commutator if needed cut back insulator strips, fit new brushes. Check cream all terminals. Voltage regulator battery terminals etc. winter was never an issue headlights etc. 😢nextdoor did… then realised his wife turned down not off the valve radio not through ignition, happy days. That and a paraffin heater under the sump cos the oil so thick pre multi.

Bought a few tickets, less so to win the thing and more so just to buy you a pint mate. If I end up winning I'll have some headscratching to do on how to get it home, but I'll worry about that in the unlikely event that I win it 😂

Hardeners are all different. Years ago my neighbour had a cottage industry coating paxolin in moulds to create the insulating section for overhead electric railway cables (so the pantograph didn't pop up between sections) and he trialled various resins and hardeners to obtain best results. Of course the big boys eventually obtained a sample whch they analised and stole his idea.

Mine was a 1964 1.6 lt, AWP 426B. Rotten as a bloody pear chassis-wise, but I was a young man and it made a lovely sound ... (Ps a Volvo Penta is/was a boat engine, usually linked to an outdrive (s) if twin engined. Nice engine that was ...

OMG OK OK! I’ll subscribe Ben! Oh wait I did that months ago. 😂 very funny bloopers section. More of that! I’ve loved the Vitesse probs cos I rebuilt one when I was 18 and I could still find every nut and bolt in them. Great cars. Top work fella. Waiting for next Friday already. Apparently there’s another show to watch in the meantime with 3 old fellas in it 😜

2 years, over 50 cars and fast approaching 300 videos! It’s a crime you’ve not burst through 100k subscribers, my weekends would be a lot duller if it wasn’t for your graft and passion for old motors. Really hope the raffle raises a decent sum that you can ‘invest’ in the mad dog Capri project. Smashed it yet again Ben, we’ll done.
