The New Jersey did still have the brig during the 1980's reactivation. It was port side aft, probably third deck (it's been a while) There were three small cells and one large cell. I personally used the large cell to store my tools and materials during both of New Jersey's pre activation sea trials

The escape scuttle outside the brig was interesting. Both the Iowa and Wisconsin were rennovated at Ingall's shipyard and New Jersey and Missouri were done at LBNSY. Because of the diameter of the scuttle, I can't help but wonder if they were put in during their 80's reactivation. If you'll notice, all the original scuttles aboard the Iowas are smaller diameter than modern Navy ships because, frankly sailors weren't as heavy back then. It was a pain during sea trials to pop open a scuttle in a deck hatch to get out to the fantail for some fresh air.

Do you have anywhere I can look to read about those re-activations? I'd like to know how long they took, how many people, what needed to be done etc. Just basic stuff, don't need the stab tables or anything. Curious.

The IOWA class brigs were a luxury hotel vs TEXAS. The BB35 brig area has 5 cells side by side off a short passageway.. The passageway door and the cell doors are solid metal with about 5 rows of holes at the top an bottom. The interior is a solid metal box. No furnishings. Not even a light bulb. The only light in a cell is what came through the holes in the doors from two light fixtures in the passageway The ships deck log entry of 28 September 1918 records a sailor sentenced to solitary confinement for 15 days. Meal time was bread and water with full ration every third day. He was also fined $27.70. He offense was breaking into a ditty box and stealing 5 boxes of Fig Newtons valued at 70 cents.

I had a guy in my unit who had been previously stationed at a remote base in the Aleutians (Shemya). He got drunk and disorderly one weekend, and was put into confinement. The USAF did not have a stockade there, so they put him in the elevator and stopped it between floors, and let him out for bathroom breaks and meals.

I only know of one guy who spent time in the USS Dixie brig. He was one of the mess cooks who thought jumping overboard while at sea would be a great way of getting out of the Navy. Ironically his buddy a deck ape liked that idea and jumped with him. While they were waiting for the ship to come back for them they got to talking and decided to tell the Captain the deck ape jumped in to save him. The Captain didn't believe a word of it but the Navy fell for it and gave the guy an certificate of accommodation for his bravery. The Captain hated giving him that, they had a huge ceremony and all. I knew these guys and hope they read this. By the way, I did bread and water in the 32nd St. brig for going UA while I was on restriction. Learned a lesson from that and made QM3 before leaving the Navy.

The mutiny was starting in 1963. That was for the same reason that was given in 1972. One word: racism. I knew of a guy on my destroyer, 1969. He was growing an afro. Ordered to cut it. He shaved his head. The guy was restricted to the ship for 30 days. In 1969, nobody shaved their head, unless medical reasons gave them a permit. I saw black sailors reading all the Leftist stuff about revolutions in spring of 1968.

In the mid '70s on the USS Lexington (CV-16), when a sailor got put in the ship's brig, the brig watchstanders came from his division and brig watches were extra watches stood in addition to your normal watches. This would tend to make the sailor in the brig much disliked by his shipmates.

However, pronunciation and even accents vary throughout the state, and St. Louis seems to have its own accent, so the way Ryan says it would be right for someone from another part of the state.

The slot in the cell door isn't for sliding a food tray in, though it can be used for that. The slot is for the inmates to stick their hands through to be hand cuffed prior to the door being opened. They are very similar to the cell doors in the facility I work in.

I do hope the guy who closed the brig door at the end is from Battleship Iowa and then it’s a full set! It’s interesting to see the differences in de/reactivations between the different ships. For example, in the 40s, NJ went into deactivation sooner and benefited from a better preparation programme, whereas Missouri got a later reactivation in the 80s and benefited from design tweaks like better design/ergonomics for new equipment like the EBA.

It's interesting the Royal Navy maintains the same sort of rivalry between the Navy and Marines and for similar reasons. Certainly in the past, the RM quarters on a ship were placed between the officers' quarters and the those of the ratings and an armed Marine sentry would always be on duty at the entrance to "officer country". In Royal Navy history there have been a couple of mutinies, but the Marines boast that they have never taken part.

I've lived in Missouri (the state) my whole life. I have a piece of unhelpful information to share: St. Louis and Kansas City usually pronounce it with an "ee" sound at the end and many other places in the state say it with an "ah" or "uh" sound at the end. The cliché is that the latter is more "rural." There is no "correct" pronunciation, only the regionally appropriate one. I don't know where the battleship Missouri factors into this, since it is unlikely to ever visit Missouri.

Hi Ryan! I have a video idea question. What did a 16" shell (or 14", 15" etc) sound like when passing overhead? I have small arms experience. For example, a supersonic 7.62x51 bullet fired at a downrange observer 200 yards away makes a loud sonic crack right as it passes by the observer's body location. It sounds like a small gunshot right next to the observer, followed by the dull thud of the gunshot sound reaching the observer next. The 16" guns fired their shells at right around 2,500 FPS which is supersonic. If New Jersey was 1,000 yards away from another smaller ship and firing over top of that small ship, would the sailors hear massive sonic booms from the 16" shells traveling past them at above Mach 2? Is that artillery howling/whistling sound in the movies what the shells actually sounded like as they traveled overhead once they had slowed down to subsonic velocity?
@ScumfuckMcDoucheface
@ScumfuckMcDoucheface 2 жыл бұрын
That's a great question. I've often heard Veterans describe large caliber shells going over head like the sound of a passing freight train. Seems like it would be a hell of an experience. Oh and hey, I'm sorry to hear about your small arms. I'm sure you don't look all thaaaat funny. I mean, Ill bet no one ever laughed at T-Rex right? Well to his face anyway.

@@wll1500 I've heard that too, and I heard from USS Massachusetts sailors that they chose to paint George the Gremlin on Turret #2 because when they fired 16" shells an observer could see them fly off into the distance with a slight wobble "as if they were being ridden by a small gremlin." It just seems pretty amazing to me to imagine a 1,900lb HE shell fly overhead on its way to a land target and make an enormous *BOOM* as its mach cone travels downward toward the location that I'm standing. I mean, there's just no difference between a huge 2,500FPS bullet and a 150gr 2,500FPS bullet when it comes to making a sonic boom. Also, fighter jets too. 🤷🏻‍♂️

Lol, I never heard of sending someone to the brig for their protection. The Captain must've been a genius to sell it to the crew that way. "Seaman Recruit Jones I'm sending you to the brig for your protection and as a added bonus I'm going to let you eat all the bread and water you want during your stay." The freshwater toilet story sounds like another typical Navy story. @@michaeldolny2919 As many tests have proven, the toilet is often cleaner than the fridge when it comes to bacteria - why is that? Because people are paranoid about the filthy toilet and overuse the abundance of potent cleaning substances. Wheres most people dont consider what dirt they put in their fridge with the products and their unwashed hands... I would suspect, cleaning duty in the brig is pretty strict. The story is a real thing, much like protective custody - your take on it is BS, though. Lighting a lighter in a magazine is a recipe for a swift ass kicking by your peers and its not unheard of that it could become a little more than that if you're not very popular to begin with.

I think the reasoning Ryan lays out in the video is sound. They didn't have that option when the ship was built, not at a practical level, and they would not have it for quite a while after WW2. There are plenty of other places one could put someone who needs protective custody, right? However, ytlas3 above says there was a brig on NEW JERSEY in the 1980s, so it may be moot. It's a big ship.

I'm guessing that the brig became less necessary after the draft ended and all volunteers became the norm. You were less likely to want to ruin your navy career if you had joined up so most infractions could be dealt with by assigning more work as he said. This goes both ways as the seniority didn't want to be too harsh most of the time.

Yes, and in the rare case where someone actually committed a serious crime they could be locked in any convenient space and guarded until they could be gotten off the ship. Paid crewmen probably don't need to be threatened with the brig as they can simply be threatened with losing their job or being assigned to less desirable duty.

this has nothing to do with battleships but it still may be of some interest My dad was a USMC in the latter part of WWII He took an LST from Pearl Harbor directly to the invasion of Iwo Jima where he went in as infantry replacement a few hours after the first wave He told me some stories about the poor sea going qualities of LSTs and being seasick as well as about the "brig" The brig consisted of a small enclosure of barbed wire in a corner of the vessel He knew another Marine who was on guard duty of supplies that were off limits to enlisted men This Marine was caught by a lieutenant stealing candy bars and was put in the brig and was on "punk and piss" (bread and water) until 72 hours before the estimated time of combat How he fared after that I was never told Dad did say that some guys were so seasick it was less than 72 hours for them before they could manage to eat anything As far as other travel by sea Dad went from Treasure Island San Francisco to Ohua on a liberty ship After the capture of Iwo he was sent to Guam but the means of transit I don't know I wish I asked him a lot more when he was still with us On Guam he told me that the few Japanese POWs were guarded by Marines including at times my Dad He looked on the POWs as kids and small by American standards except for the one officer who was allowed to order the enlisted men around with a haughty and supercilious manner bordering on cruelty at times The officer dad did not like at all but the men were OK in fact they were going to make him some kind of souvenir type thing a more exact definition I no longer remember However some guards were unecessarilly brutal I asked him if he thought that was the case because of seeing buddies killed by them but he said No they were scumbags before they ever put on a uniform He did say of one incident while he and buddy were driving a truck in a jungle area 2 dirty emactiated looking Japanese came out of the jungle with hands in the air His buddy wanted to shoot them saying they might have a grenade but the driver stopped and dad jumped out with an M1 and his buddy's dog ushered them into the back of the truck where he sat with the M1 pointed at them He said they seemed more scared of the dog than the M1 In any cases they had 2 POWs He told me a young native of Guam told him the Japansese told his father to dive for pearls or else! The young man stepped forth because he knew his father was too old for that so he tried The Japanese had a very bad reputation with the natives Dad was originally slated for the invasion of Kyushu but there were enough volunteers who had not yet seen combat so he didn't have to go and Thank God for that When the war ended he was headed for Long Beach CA in a CVE thence to New York his hometown via train

These days it would make sense to keep the brig because navies are involved in operations other than war and war with assymetric non peer enemy e.g terrorists, pirates etc. Come to think of it it probably would've made sense to keep it in the 80s too IIRC Hezbolllah were doing their thing in those days when the BBs were firing on Lebanon, and I'm pretty sure it was not as huge an issue, but piracy was still an issue in SE Asia.

Also another question: Do you need to obtain an NFA tax stamp for a destructive device when you reactivate the 5" guns and AA guns? They're breach loading, rifled, greater than .500" in bore diameter, and they're not sporting shotguns. 😸 How does that work?
@seanmcdonnell1282
@seanmcdonnell1282 2 жыл бұрын
The 5" guns are a separate projectile and powder cartridge so those should be exempt. Technically the 16" would be exempt as well for the same reason. Not sure on the AA guns but I'd assume some historical exemption. It's legal to own rifles larger than .50 if they have a sporting use so there are exceptions.

@@seanmcdonnell1282 You know, that's true. .700 Nitro rifles are not DDs. 🤔 I think it would be a trip convincing someone that a 40mm Bofors or Oerlikon has "sporting use" though. 😸 Maybe there is an ATF ruling paper giving a variance in situations like these where museum artillery can be reactivated by a nonprofit without hassle? I mean, they issued this sort of directive before such as the one to remove things like an original C96 or Hi Power with their original stock holster from the NFA as an SBR.

I support law and order. This indicates I believe in throwing deliberate wrong-doers into jail in the civilian world and into the brig in the Navy and Marine Corps universe. That having been said, I'm not one who wishes to disagree with Navy regulations having been raised the son of Navy doctor and WWII veteran, and having myself served in the Navy. I've never done jail time (brig time, either). But I accept and support all articles of Regulation for the United States Navy. Andy McKane, 28 September 2022, Maunaloa, Hawaii.

I'd imagine that those spaces were used mostly for suicide watch. After being cleared medically and stripped of dangerous items they would be put on watch down there. It would be safer then being in medical, and there is no need for a medical watch. Everyone knows if they say the wrong thing they will go down to the brig not home.

The guy with the lighter was put back on regular duty? Id run him out of the Navy. Industry would fire and blacklist if someone done that. If you light a lighter in a potentially explosive atmosphere where open flames are prohibited, you are DONE. Id refuse to work with somelike that. Sorry, but a life time ban is needed for ole Sparky, or whatever he calls himself. You can't employ a pyromaniac or a fool on the ship anyplace, much less the powder handling areas.

According to my dad, everyone made sure all matches, lighters and pocket warmers were secured before entering handling rooms and magazines. Parts of the ship you just didn't take flammable devices. Parts of the ship you stay away from if you have no business being around them. You lived in your working area in a destroyer. If you wanted to catch up with someone, you caught them off watch in a common area.

On the Ranger the officers and brig Marines/sailors abused the prisoners and forced punitive exercise on the flight deck in the Subic sun while denying water. When one prisoner went delusional, they beat him to death. Of course the ship's captain got the lightest slap on the wrist for it. Did anything similar happen on the Missouri or New Jersey?

@@mannys9130 The navy had originally covered it up. They had forced the victim to lay face down on the deck in the sun for a half hour after the heat stroke started. But then shipmates quietly wrote the family to inform them of the murder, and they got a second doctor, outside the navy, to perform a real autopsy. Two congressmen had to get involved to force even the slaps on the wrist. At the same time, a body was discovered in the river of Subic from a CCU 'escapee' and the navy claimed the hanging marks around his neck meant nothing
