Locked Inside Our RV | Fixing a Broken RV Lock

The lock on our RV broke and we were trapped inside! Luckily, we keep a small toolbox inside and were able to get out.

I know this has been 4 years but you have saved yet another RVer. I was rushing south to avoid a winter storm when I found myself locked in my RV. One minute it was fine; then it wasn’t. Watched your video and figured out how I could get myself in and out until I got on the other side of the storm and find someone to help me. My dog is especially grateful. ❤️👍🏻

I am joining the long list of THANK YOUs this morning. Your video was super helpful, as opposed to others, not so much for our LOCKED IN (!) situation. We are traveling in AZ from Canada, and this morning at a new campsite, we received full morning sunshine for the first time on this trip on the door side. That caused the deadbolt to not fully release. Adjustments and lubes coming up! Luckily, my handy new DeWalt multitool was in the kitchen cupboard. Of course, my overloaded toolbox was in the truck bed! However, I was able to tease out the screws of the latch assembly with the DeWalt, and get us out of the trailer to enjoy a beautiful sunny morning 🌄. Thanks again!!

Thanks, we've been full time since June 1st, 2022 and today we encountered the same problem... stuck in our RV by what appears to be a stuck deadbolt. I'm sooo glad I decided to bring my tool bag in last night. Going to try taking it apart in a few mins.

Thank you and will be trying this tomorrow as my motor home "house" door is stuck. I locked it up and left for a function only to return and not be able to get in. Fortunately, the Cab door allowed inside access but it is night time now and I will need to try the removal after breakfast. Watching you try to get out was my exact response. I hope I can find a replacement latch soon as I live in the MH and climbing in and out of the cab is a bit tough on these old bones.

Lmao it's been been a ugh 2 hours in a snow storm .. locked out finally made it through a tiny window used used a wooden shelf and and table as a stool.. made it inside.. but freezing cold and wet.. now can't get outside and tools are outside in the shed 😂

Be careful when you park to make sure your unit is level, the locks break easily especially when forced. If not level they bind.

This happened to me this morning, had to walk to a convenience store, call a locksmith and now need to replace the lock on my rv door. 1 month full time RVing... life is always going to give us challenges no matter where we hang our hat.

We had the same problem today! Did exactly what you did but haven’t pried the bolt out yet since we don’t have a new door handle yet!

Okay guys, you weren't locked in two doors in cab......could have slowed down film to show what you did. Decent video but you were not locked in and didnt have to use your window, just front doors of cab.

Looks like a Class A. No doors up front. Mine is definitely a Class A, and I've had the same thing - TWICE. Yes, the supposedly improved replacement I got a few years ago failed, too.

Happened to me as well. Only at night, in the rain. Went out the window to take the dogs out; got back in with my stepladder which I then brought inside. Used that several times before I finally got to a rest area in order to get it fixed. Deadbolt broken.

So why do they still use this licking mechanism if it's so typically failing? What if there was a fire? This is a basic safety issue.

I'm dealing w this right now. But it's not working as easily for me. Screws easy to remove, but getting the licking mechanism off is another thing.

Had to jam the screwdriver into the mechanism and crawl out the passenger side door to open from outside. Not sure why I couldn't open from inside. But thanks.

TriMark recalled the lock for this problem. Particular problem in an emergency. To be sure, contact coach manufacturer with your serial number.

This happened to me yesterday with a TriMark 650 from 1998. Seems it's the aluminum bolt in the TriMark is prone to failure. The newer replacements (60-1650) have a steel bolt. I got mine for $90 on eBay. Lucky for me, I was also inside.

Living Life In Between Wow. I wonder if you got one of the older models with the same aluminum bolt as a replacement the first time. I was told the steal bolt was only changed 5 years old. I'm sure dealers have old ones in stock still.

Just an FYI, I would check the striker with a magnet, as 99% of the handles on Ebay have the pot metal plunger in them. The only one on there with a steel plunger is about $170 shipped. I see lots of them, as I make a stainless steel repair kit to replace the pot metal part. I've had 3 of them break and lock me out before I started making and selling the kit.

You can still use the dead bolt to secure your rv until you can get a replacement.

It's not just Forest River. Most manufacturers use the same brand of cheap lockset.

Correct. And they ,and the dealers could care less. Needs to be a major class action lawsuit or a regulatory setup. I'm anti government regulation, but buying an Entegra Esteem has changed my mind. 90 grand for a pretty- looking piece of crap.

Got an Entegra Esteem 30x. Same problem. On top of that ,the striker plate won't stay in position. Gen. Rv seems not to know of a permanent fix. This is a 2018. Want to avoid this and many other problems you will encounter? Find a different hobby. Want to spend sleepless nights kicking yourself in the ass for a really poor purchase?, get a Entegra Esteem. $90 grand, 4 hours of sleep per night. Don't believe me? Get one. You will.

everyone with this problem should file a claim with DOT. This a SAFETY concern. If you had a fire you would probably die.. You will need the vehicle VIN. Web page is www-odi.nhtsa.dot.gov/VehicleComplaint/
