I've heard hoses can deteriorate on the inside to the point they will clog. At first that doesn't seem to make sense because they no fluid would get to the caliper, however, the pressure to move the fluid to the caliper is gigantic compared to pushback after the brake is released. I guess that's where the clog really causes a problem.

Hey man. I have a question for u if u have a minute or 2.. My niece has a VW POLO here in IRELAND. It failed it's MOT/NCT test. The road worthy test older cars have to get done every year. It's a 2011 car and the garage that failed her on the Brake hoses. It said rust pitting on the hose. Are these hoses metal? I thought they were rubber or plastic of some kind. So I wanted to ask if it's ok for me to change them if I get the correct hoses? Is it ok for me with no experience to change them out and if I did what type of checks would I need to do to make sure they're working?? properly I mean.. Thanks for this video man. Very informative

@stevemiller9954 жыл бұрын
Here is what I found, but there may be other explanations for other issues. On a Ford F150, and I am confident on others, the brake hose runs through a metal bracket and the rust on the inside of the bracket pinches the inner brake hose line shut. Rust grows and pinches the line. The pedal forces fluid into the caliper, the the fluid is unable to back-flow up the brake hose to release the pressure.

May be that the left side isn’t compressing, or the tabs (ears as i like to call em) of the pads are seized into the caliper bracket and not moving. if you take the pads out and inner / outer aren’t worn straight, you may likely have a seized caliper slide pin.

Hi, I have locked up real calipers, both right and left, making a lot of grinding noise when driving. I ended up with replacing calipers and brake pads only to find out I still have the same problem. I read someone mentioning the lock up can be caused by faulty brake hose then watched your video. At this point, I think (and hope) it is the hose blocking the back flow preventing the caliper retract. So the rubber hoses have sludge dirt in them? I just don't understand how that could happen. I also read a online story of the guy that said it was actually his master cylinder wasn't allowing the pressure of the fluid to go back up into the reservoir. He said he put a brand-new dorman on and it failed so he had to take it back and get a reman. I'm a little suspicious of all this
@KilliKonKarnage Жыл бұрын
The rubber hoses have a nylon tubing inside which the brake fluid runs thru. This can tear/collapse according to forums I've read up on, creating a 1 way valve allowing fluid to push the piston but not come back the other way to relieve pressure
@2Jeezuzisreal Жыл бұрын
@@KilliKonKarnage . I am so surprised by all of this I've been driving Chevys and Fords all my life and have never heard of this. I wonder if it's just certain rubber hoses are defective. Hi Keith, thank you so much for your videos. I am having this problem with a 2006 Hyundai Sonata. I replaced the caliper, still had the problem, then used the bleeder valve to determine it was in the hydraulics. After thinking it was a master cylinder issue I brought it to my mechanic who then replaced the flex hose thinking it was that. It made sense at the time since they were old, and I pinched them when changing the caliper (to avoid fluid loss and air entry) and thought maybe I damaged them and broke some rubber off inside. I should also add, mechanic said he was able to compress the pistons (after I was not able to until I cracked the bleeder, hmmm.) Problem still happened, I got caliper replaced under warranty, from NAPA, thinking maybe a faulty rebuild, Still happening. I know this is long winded but my question to you is, when you say clog further up from flex hose, can you explain what and where that might happen? My mechanic says if it was at the MC then it would happen on both front brakes. I am at a complete loss and don't know what to try next and reluctant to take back to mechanic who is clearly going to continue to just hunt a peck at the problem. DO I start tearing lines apart? DO I just replace the MC and hope that's it? I can't get anyone to acknowledge a possible problem in the lines, must be very rare. Everyone say caliper, pins etc. there is no way it is the caliper at this point.

@@bobbystone5436 I had all the same signs. Turned out that because the set screw for the rotor able to be used the rotor would be offset when the wheel was installed and tightened. That set screw is very necessary in keeping the rotor perfectly aligned
@andrewnorris15142 жыл бұрын
My set screw must have broke off years prior to me having this problem. It is very necessary that without that set screw you take EXTRA time in torquing the lugs so that the rotor stays centered
@bryangonzalez8065 Жыл бұрын
I have the same issue going on can you explain further what is the set screw?
@Joe-kj8bw Жыл бұрын
@@bryangonzalez8065 The "set screws" or retaining bolts are the two flat head screws that hold the rotor to the Hub. Many times they break when trying to remove them to replace the rotor. If they break you can choose to attempt to drill/extract them out and replace them with new ones (obviously best practice), or just not use them since the wheel lugs are really enough to hold the rotor to the hub as it is sandwiched in between. However, if you choose to leave them broke you must be sure when you place the new rotor back on that you properly align the retaining bolt holes with the broken bolts or the rotor will sit cocked on the hub (because the broken bolt is sticking out) and cause the problem that @andrewnorris1514 had. You can also grind them down as well. Hope this helps explain.

My running theory is an issue with the piston seal, from what I've read the seal is what actually pulls the piston back that tiny fraction to stop it from dragging.

@@DanielRichards644 thanks for the response. I ordered a brake hose but I fear that wont solve it. I performed a test where you crack the bleeder, and if its the brake hose being collapsed it will presumably release the caliper due to the brake fluid pressure being relieved. In my case, it didnt release the caliper. I will try anyways, otherwise my next steps will probably be the master cylinder. Good luck!

@@DanielRichards644 Hey man I figuered out today that my problem is likely the brake pad. I have a spinning piston caliper with a big plus sign that aligns with a bump on the back of the inside rear pad. I found that in my case, the bump was almost chewed off presumably from not being aligned correctly when I replaced the pads. Hope this helps, good luck! I will be replacing my pads tomorrow and confirming the issue.

Bought a truck, drove it 4 miles to the car wash to spray it off and TO MY SURPRISE, right front was on FIRE! Quickly changed some dollars and sprayed it out. Bad brake line was the fault. Fixed it and drove it for 14years. Lost it to a carb fire in 2016 😢.

That's a funny, scary and sad comment all at the same time.

Would it be possible to clean the blockage? Or do I have to replace the hose.
@BarboursAutoHelp4 жыл бұрын
I recommend relacement.

Usually the blockage comes from deterioration of the hose. Especially if it is older than 5-10 or so years

@@63ch31sorry 3 yrs late. Even if the hose looks completely fine on the outside, can it still fail?
@63ch31 Жыл бұрын
@@KilliKonKarnage no worries mate. That would be kinda rare, but not impossible . Particularly if you have severely contaminated brake fluid. Production defects also do happen occationally. The only way to know for sure is checking. You can often see the signs of a blockage by comparing against the other brakes the fluid flow while bleeding the brakes as well as the effort needed to push the caliper piston back in. The number of cars I've worked on is limited, so I can't really tell you how likely this is. Also, because of the salty climate I live in, the problem is almost always a seized caliper.

@@63ch31 ah thanks. My car is 19yo but only 40k miles and the caliper is original. I replaced the caliper but still have a brake bind due to piston not retracting. I think the hose is probably 19yo as well haha
