Locked Up with Dignity? Canada's Federal Prison for Women (Crime Documentary) | Real Stories
This documentary takes us inside the walls of Grand Valley Institution-one of five federal prisons for women in Canada. Here, most residents live in small shared houses, in an environment that is supposed to be female-friendly. The film features three unforgettable women over age 50 doing time in a system that can seem designed to frustrate and baffle. Vietnamese Kim struggles with translation and awaits a parole board hearing that seems to never come, while Pearl relies on her faith in God to stay positive throughout the hard reality of prison life. Finally, T.A.'s larger-than-life outlook serves her well, whether she's fighting for greater access and rights for prisoners or composing and performing her own country-tinged musical compositions. While the film doesn't idealize these flawed characters, it also advances the notion that those who have committed crimes deserve to be treated with dignity.

Exactly. In America you sure do not have the freedom to come and go as you please. Prison means you stay in prison until you are released. And you sure do not have these private nice accommodations lime on this show in Canada. Of course they said it is federal prison so that is more comfortable...even federal prison in US is better than state prisons. But still not as comfortable as on here.

Most of the people are non violent criminals, why wouldn't you want to try restorative and supportive (like Sweden does) over punitive for minor crimes? Why wouldn't you want to have a better pension, better social equity and better support programs for everyone rather than letting people slip through cracks in the first place? There is a big reason as to why the US has the largest prison population on the planet and the highest recidivism rates, locking people up for 30 years for substance abuse, or 5 years for voting because private prisons make a kick back is barbaric.

@drsylvietourigny5428

Yes, Canada has a significantly lower recidivism rate than the U.S. In fact, this is true of most first world nations. If you read most of the comments, you can see how much resentment U.S. viewers display towards Canadian detainees, because Canada refuses to adopt the "kennel" model of incarceration so popular in the U.S. Because the environment is humane, Kim's relationship with Corinna is gradually easing despite the difficulties introduced by the parole board. T.A. is simply asking that her medically-validated allergy to smoke be honoured; she does get hot under the collar, but a detention officer brings things under control. I am Canadian Australian and worked in the U.S. criminal justice system for several years. This doco may antagonise some viewers who believe in the "lock them under the jail" school of thought, but i would suggest thinking about the emphasis on rights. Canada is doing a humane job!

They need to clarify why these women are in prison, first of all. 1) The way Kim's parole hearing keeps getting delayed is outrageous, very sad. 2) The woman who killed her friend needs to accept responsibility for what she did & stop seeing herself as a victim. She also needs anger management I believe; she has a lot of rage, which justified or not causes her to be dysfunctional.

I very much wanted to feel sorry for these women but the only one I feel sorry for is Kim. T.A. is hopelessly hostile and manipulative. She cleaned the room and said "ready for the next victim", no--ready for the next convict! They live in a prison state because they committed a crime! They took something or someone from society. WE, the taxpayers are paying for them to live in a dignified "condominium style" home with food service included. The blonde lady comes across as quite the spoiled brat considering she's doing time for breaking the law, but I do sympathize with her regarding the smokers she has to live with. I live in a nursing home and it's supposed to be a non-smoking facility, but until recently they were sill admitting smokers. They would gather right outside my window to smoke, so that even with the window closed it still seeped in and gave me asthma attacks. There was a designated smoking area, but nobody did anything to enforce it so the smokers jut got comfortable doing whatever they wanted. Finally they stopped admitting smokers to the facility, period. Now if you're looking to move in they make you quite smoking first, so as the old smokers who already lived here pass away or move on, it becomes less and less of a problem. But it was still really maddening for the first few years, not even being able to breathe in my own room after I was told specifically I would be moving into a non-smoking facility.

Kim aimed for an innocent looking persona and even hid behind a language barrier, "no English, no understand," but this behaviour did not fool the authorities. Many psychotic people fake feelings to charm their captives into liking or feeling sorry for them. The sociopath plays the classic victim to deflect any ridicule, harsh punishment and condemnation. Your argument is weak lady, and unrelated. There was no evidence for planting, false identity or guilty until proven innocent law enforcement strategies. Kim knew how to play the unwitting victim of what looked like an abusive system but do not be so sure, remember the crime was dealing CRACK COCAINE over a significant period not unknowingly thus accidentally selling something lethal to the unsuspecting public. Fun fact the incarceration rate in Canada is only 139 per 100,000 whereas in the US it is 698 per 100,000, which is more than 5 times lower.

I watched this intently with objectivity and empathy. We have to understand that these women are incarcerated because they committed a crime. They have no appreciation that this facility is far more humane than being in a US prison. Kim, while being a 'sympathetic' inmate, was a tried drug dealer. TA, is never going to accept responsibility and needs serious 'anger management' treatment. She's a 'poor pity me', always being the victim, never the perpetrator. Many of us have faced that fork in the road; pull of your boot straps and make the decision 'what is YOUR right path' and take ownership for your decision.

The lady complaining about smoke is a Karen if I ever saw one! Geez she’s got a lot of gull when she is so unbelievably privileged to be in such a facility. She’s not in charge or running the show!

I live in the university dorm when I was in university. I live there for four years. In my room I had a sink, a desk, a wardrobe/closet and a bed. It was cinderblock walls with cheap linoleum tiles. We had a communal bathroom on each floor. These "prisoners" live in much better accommodations than I ever had as a starving student. Just saying. They can sit in their home and read or study all day without having to work? I can hardly think they are hard done by.

I don't even understand this documentary! The famous fashion designer in Winnipeg that trafficed young women and raped them never had to pay for his crime's and then you have this documentary and what I was hearing which wasn't much, these women should not be in for as long as they are. Are there different laws in Ontario versus Winnipeg or different laws between men and women or he didn't get charged because he was famous??? I thought Canada was a great country, but I'm having second thoughts.

My heart really breaks for Kim. It does seem like they are not only trying to keep her longer and longer on trumped up charges, but they are also keeping her on a roller coaster ride of emotions. I have no idea what is behind their cruelty to her. It's just obvious that they are being deliberately cruel.

@@chuckbeedle1983 - Yeah, but the time she was supposed to spend was six months in the prison. She end up having her time doubled for what seems to be BS. So she did her time plus she did more than her time. That’s why it’s not fair. And that’s what it seems you’re missing.

@@iMatti00 no im missing nothing. I feel what this young girl went through and unless your in her situstion yourself you in no way understand what shes gone through, through out her life. scars dont need to be visable, wounds dont need to grow., but the hurt in ones mind can never go away. Make no mistake, she sees the gravity of her situation and this will live in her mind no t going any where just only festering. Every one deserves a chance so who are we to judge. I got a second chance myself and now have a lovely life but the nightmares and hurt still fester in me i just choose not to show it.

The simple fact that the majority of you all are watching this one video and are assuming that this is the only part of this institution. If you know ANYTHING about Canada and it's Provincial and Federal Prison system you would understand the difference between minimum security in a females facility vs a men's facility - which is what Blondie was talking about. A male minimum security it's a half way house or group home like set up. From personal experience of dealing with this system myself it isn't as lollipops and roses as they make it seem. Take this with a grain of salt. Quality of life in a federal vs provincial is 100% better yes, but let us not forget that THIS IS JAIL. So people are going to try to make the best of a horrible situation. Not every crime is justified with a prison sentence. This system will lock you in on a foolish charge and sink your whole battle ship from there on.
