What am I missing here? If they can't trade Kirk just put him as the backup for next year. Who cares if he doesn't want to be a backup! He doesn't dictate that. I am pretty sure a lot of the players don't want to be a back up but there they are. Don't give Kirk more leverage by releasing him just because he wants to. Why would we pay his salary to play for somebody else next year? Keep him and there could be a team who needs a QB to start and if he really wants to start, he will waive is no trade clause.
@erickd336016 күн бұрын
Totally agree! I've been saying the best thing about having Kirk is knowledge of the game. The cap is the cap. The money is already spent and accounted for, why cut him and you not get anything back.
@KyleConfer16 күн бұрын
Because of respect. Hold Kirk hostage all season, and imagine how next year’s free agents feel about potentially coming here. Show other players that you will show them respect regardless of how things go, and more free agents will see this as a better place to sign. Keep Kirk against his will and waste one of the last 2-3 years he feasibly has to play football, and the rest of the league will take note in a bad way.
@erickd336016 күн бұрын
@@KyleConfer I disagree, we showed respect by paying him 100M guaranteed for what ended up being 14 games. He should have been benched after the SD game but we were going to play Minnesota the next week and kept him as a starter so he could play in that game...that was respectful also. The opposite of your proposition could happen too. Free agents could begin to think that ATL will pay big guarantees and they can play badly and get out after one or two years. It's a delicate situation for sure but one that Kirk and the organization needs to have a full understanding from both sides. I would hold out for at least a 5th that he cost us for speaking about tapering or a 6th and some salary back off his contract.

I don’t like all of the Terry slander simply because he doesn’t coach and he doesn’t play and the people who do are the ones that didn’t hold their end of the bargain. If anyone needs to go it’s Jimmy Lake. Without Rah and Jerry Gray holding his hand his defense looks horrible and it isn’t because the players aren’t good. It was because when left to his own devices Lake didn’t put them in the position to be successful. Also there needs to be accountability for the decisions Morris made by not pulling Kirk and Koo earlier and not having an adequate kicker behind him. That’s the reason we missed the playoffs

If Kirk wants to play, he has to agree to a trade. The Falcons own him. He’s a professional. To say that he holds all the cards is based on the massive egos of other players and franchises.

@@bryantsturgis3333 Agreed, but I'd rather have that money on my bench than paying him to sit on another team's bench!. Gotta pay him either way. Kinda like having a BMW that has AC problems, but you have not finished paying off the note. You wouldn't set it on the side of the road for someone else to come get and drive around while you still pay the note! May be kinda expensive only to drive in the winter, but until you pay it off, or can get a reasonable trade for it, it's yours!

I've said this numerous times .. there is no need to cut or trade him.. He will be an expensive back up... But basically play REVERSE UNO.. same plan... You have two good quarterbacks on your roster as you wanted to plan and you have a capable backup if something happens 🤷🏾♂️

As far as Cousins, maybe, just maybe he wants to be in Atlanta to finish his career. His wife's home town, family here, kids in school here. I feel like the better play is to keep him as a very overpaid QB2 and then offer him a front office position when he steps away. But that's only if Cousin's can come to terms with his NFL mortality.

Where Kyle Pitts is concerned I really feel that if we’re going to get average TE production then we might as well trade him and sign someone who is considered to be just a “good” TE and recoup some draft capital. Initially I wasn’t onboard with trading Pitts but then I asked myself if Pitts was traded would the offense miss him? When I came to the conclusion that the answer was no it became a lot easier to see us moving on from him. Another thing I noticed during the Raheem Morris presser was that he referred to Penix, London and Bijan as the “Big 3” with no mention of Pitts. I’m thinking the team has already moved on from him mentally and it’s just a matter of time before he’s gone.

a lot of fans in these comments seem to think the team can make Cousins be the backup next year. but Aaron is right - Kirk can just sit out the entire season if they refuse to cut or trade him, and then we'll still have to find another backup. holding a season veteran player hostage like that is also a bad look to other veterans, not just in our locker room, but across the league. the only way Cousins is our backup is if he WANTS to stay in Atlanta and backup Penix.
