I was in a C5 as a passenger while it did aerial refueling over Atlantic and it was better than most roller coaster rides!!!

Amazingly cool footage. A KC-135 Instructor, I left a qualified crew up front and joined the boom operator to watch a Galaxy refueling and lost my nerve, returned to the cockpit. It's like an office building sitting back there, in real life. A fellow IP had one drop away suddenly from her; she'd busted the AR block before regaining control, it pitched the tanker up so sharply. BTW, both of these crews are stellar, super proficient. Nice job, tanker and receiver!

The C-5M is Awesome looking! I lived at Westover AFB in Chicopee Massachusetts growing up in the 80s and now I see the C-5M from the 439th AIrLift Wing everyday....my dad retired from the 104th FW in Westfield Massachusetts after 26 years! Great Video!

Travis AFB to Tokyo...I was seated with others in that little bump just in front of the tail. We were being refueled....I was finally ready to lose my lunch when we leveled off. Best ride of my life.

Got to ride on the same tanker KC-135R from Ohio ANG to refuel C5.....student upgrades to aircraft commander (Military version for Captain). Took about three hours and two boom operators. Each time one student would get his plug, stay on the boom for the required time they would back off and let another student change seats. Instructor pilots were observing from right seat. We got about five-ten students upgraded that night. The tanker from this video is from Pittsburgh, PA. Air National Guard unit 171ARW. Even the engine start sequence was correct 3-4-1-2. The C5 commonly has two fuel trucks hooked up and can empty them fairly quickly.

I had a similar experience as a boomer while TDY to Altus AFB. Three hours with one of their C-5s. One pilot was getting a check ride to upgrade to Instructor. The other was a copilot getting a check ride to upgrade to Aircraft Commander. It was at night, and I was all by myself. The only break I got was when they changed seats and had to perform another rendezvous.

I think this refueling was done at somewhere over 20000 feet for I seem to hear about going down to 20000 feet at end of video. Awesome sight of the flight between and above layer of clouds!

Crystal Clear video! So much wing flex on it, it could benefit from those protype winglets that Lockheed made for the M model.

Just for clarification 436 airlift wing at Dover is the active duty wing. The 512 is the reserve wing. We always shared the same aircraft so often you wouldn’t know whether it is an active duty or a reserve crew flying airplane. I only mention it because of what was certainly a video description about the 436 airlift wing.

I remember back in the 80s when Col Kross (Wing Commander) flew the first C5B into Dover AFB. And was labeled the "City of Dover" I believe. I worked the CP and was able to take a couple of photos of him flying in. The C5 has evolved over the decades.

Wonderful video.. notice the turn at around 13 minutes, watch the boom shadow and the horizon at top left of viewers view… great job by both pilots! Hardest job was air refueling instructor before we got good simulators. Refueling from Kc135 was good, but slow… KC 10 was faster, passed much more fuel, but the exhaust his #2 engine hit our (C5) T-tail.

Great stuff! When the C-5 was done eating, it looked like a big whale going down into the deep. When you saw them from the side the KC-135 looked like a shark. At the same time it reminded me of a tow truck. Missing was yellow lights and beeps. Lol!

that c 5 fuel tank is bigger than the plane refueling it, seems like the c5 should just tow the other plane along sort of a self propelled fuel tank.

The C-5M has numerous upgrades, by far most notably the more powerful engines. (But they absolutely RUINED the sound, compared to that put out by the original engines.)

Can 1 kc135 completely refuel this huge c5?
@ernestgalvan90373 жыл бұрын
@Dennis Schreiber … A C5M has a fuel capacity of some 340,000 lbs of fuel. A KC-135 can off-load some 200,000 lbs of fuel. About 2/3 of a ‘full-tank’. So, while the -135 can not completely refuel a C5, it CAN do some serious ‘topping off’….
