I finally got to see one of these in person over the summer and I was quite surprised to find it was actually smaller than I thought it would be compared to the Corsair or Thunderbolt (which were sitting next to it). It’s really just one long thin wing with a tiny cockpit and engines. Seeing pictures or videos of it from an above or below aspect always made it appear much larger than what it actually is.
@JosephArata2 жыл бұрын
It's a pretty fast aircraft for it's size and weight. No where near the flight ceiling as the P-51, but that's not what it's role was. Still a really great aircraft that can carry a few bombs and has some pretty powerful machine guns mounted to it.
@josephk13422 жыл бұрын
Saw a b17 recently, it was way smaller than I expected. I think a lot of ww2 fighters look larger than life.
@lawrencezimmerman87692 жыл бұрын
@@josephk1342 I don’t know, the Corsair that I saw next to the Lightning just kind of dwarfed it so much that it took me a bit before I noticed the P-38. I wasn’t shocked by the Corsair, but that girl is just about as big as the Thunderbolt, just maybe a tad more streamlined. Thunderbolt’s a THICCC girl! Agreed on the B-17, although I don’t know if “small” is the right word. I’ve climbed through a couple of them and I’d call them more “tight” than they initially appear. Like the guys that flew them were definitely several inches shorter than me.
@lawrencezimmerman87692 жыл бұрын
@@JosephArata I don’t know what the weight of it is, but just judging it by my MK 1 eyeball I would say it’s probably lighter than the P-51. I’ve seen those a few times in my life and I was surprised by how big they are for their performance. I’m not saying they’re huge or anything, but it’s like comparing the size of a muscle car versus an F1 car. It’s the size of fuselage and cockpit on the two. I think just about any average person could climb in a Mustang, but the Lightning would probably have to take someone a bit smaller.
@RT420692 жыл бұрын
Weird, because more modern jet fighters are the opposite: way bigger than most would imagine. F-14s, F-15s, and F-22s absolutely dwarf the P-38
@JonNo862 жыл бұрын
P-38 is one of my favorites of all time. Such an underrated fighter compared to the Mustangs and Spitfires. She was so well designed though. Heavily armed with that central firing platform, extremely survivable, and the thing was FAST! On top of all that, it was an extremely effective tactical fighter-bomber. There was a reason why the highest scoring American Aces in WWII flew P-38s! It was so good at just swatting planes out of the sky, as you just demonstrated! Really loving the IL-2 content, please sprinkle it in more and more. Have you ever considered doing the perma-death single player campaign??

In a worst case scenario P-38 can very well turn tighter than any German fighter when using the Fowler flaps. Late variants (J-25 and up to) could follow them in dive using any time the dive recovery brakes. Also having hydro-boosted ailerons could roll very well (much better than any single engine fighter except maybe the FW190).

The unique shape of the P-38 was a mixed blessing. I remember reading in the Mediterranean, the Navy shot down a bunch of C-47s in a blue on blue incident. After that, only Lightnings were allowed to fly over fleets, in the Med. The Germans appreciated that Lightnings were easy to identify, allowing more time to decide whether to attack or fly away.

Ain’t it crazy how a absolutely UNIT of an aircraft like the Lightning can just tangle with single engine fighters so well?
@echodelta21722 жыл бұрын
When you look at the layout of a Lightning, the designers made immense effort to minimize the plane's mass and volume. When you remove the booms, the plane isn't big at all and the booms are very slim.
@debbiestimac51752 жыл бұрын
But it was miserable to fly at high altitudes, it was an icebox, because it had no engine in front of the cockpit. In the Pacific, they would use them to get the beer cold and looked forward to getting low after long patrol missions, to warm themselves back up. The ETO guys suffered greatly on those long escort missions, their suits could not keep up.
@Chio_OB2 жыл бұрын
@@debbiestimac5175 It also had terribly unreliable engines and could easily kill pilots due to compressibility, if I remember without googling they kinda sorted it with an airbrake? Best for Pacific theatre (2 engines), lower altitude and it was warmer, lol
@remingtonwingmaster69292 жыл бұрын
It wasn't the engines that were unreliable, it was the props; depending on the variant, they had a tendency to run away
@smittywjmj2 жыл бұрын
@@Chio_OB The dive recovery flaps aren't airbrakes, like the name suggests, they function as a form of high-speed flap. Compressibility was also not the problem, although it was suspected by Lockheed for a long time, which is why the real fix took so long to be implemented. What happens in steep dives is that the center of lift (CoL) moves aft and actually off of the wing, effectively meaning the wing stops flying and the flight controls will no longer work.

probably if i had to guess, i can see a pro and a con; Pro: You're able to exert more force on the stick, and in an age of cable driven flight surfaces, that's a big deal Con: less responsive in that you need to kinda rapidly flick it like a steering wheel. you can see in the video that the inputs are made by a flightstick, so you can see the yoke going crazy. it's humanly impossible to twist it that much that quick
