How to pin/lock the crankshaft/flywheel when changing the timing belt in NFU or TU5JP4 1.6L 16v 110bhp petrol Peugeot/Citroen engines.
The car is a Peugeot 307 (2007; 1.6L 16v petrol; 110bhp; ~47,000miles; TU5JP4 engine). This should be the same in Citroen with the same 1.6 petrol engines. Make sure that you have put the pins in the camshaft sprockets and the line at the bottom of the crankshaft is pointing down. Then you can wiggle the crankshaft tool to lock the crankshaft/flywheel. If it does not go smooth enough you can rotate the crankshaft (with camshaft sprockets locked) a tiny amount clockwise or counterclockwise, only a small amount so the tool can go in the flywheel. Do not turn too much counterclockwise.
The genuine tool is 6mm, but I had to file it to ~5.7-5.8mm. The hole gets rusty and the 6mm rod does not fit quite well. The length of the rod that goes inside of the hole is ~2.8cm.
The camshaft sprockets are 8mm, so one can use a drill for that purpose. Also, there is a U-shaped clamp to hold the new timing belt on the crankshaft, but it does not really work. I use cardboard that I stuck underneath the crankshaft to hold the belt in pace, much easier.
Here are a few very good videos of how to change the timing belt:
• Peugeot / Citroen 1.6 ...
The next two are in Russian, but they are really good to watch of how to replace it, even if one does not understand the language:
• Tu5jp4(NFU) ремнь ГРМ...

@moremolecules

Yeah, good question. I have not done it on my 1.6HDi, so difficult to give you a proper answer. I think the flywheel locking in the 1.6HDi is only to release the pulley bolt and not used for timing. The 1.6 petrol is used for timing.

Not too sure if my video will do it. Have a look at the videos listed in the description. One is in Russian, but pretty good. The other one is German, but with English subtitles. As long as the 3 match, there shoud not be a problem, i.e. the two camshaft and the crankshaft one.

Thanks for sharing your knowledge and expertise. I bought a timing belt (Bosch brand) for my Peugeot 206 sedan 1.6 two cam shafts. The belt has 134 teeth! I just want to make sure if it's the right one to my car? I intend to make the replacement my self.

It is fairly straightforward to change the belt + water pump and associated pulleys. I should have made a video, but thought not. I cannot quite remember if mine was 134 teeth. I bought this: www.autodoc.co.uk/gates/7024338 It was GATES KP15581XS belt + water pump and pulleys. The belt is Gates 5581XS with 134 teeth.

@@moremolecules Yes, I'll definitely change the water pump + pulleys. One more question please. 🙏 The belt I bought has no marks (I mean the three white marks) for the crank and cam shafts. Should I buy another one with those white marks, or may I count the number of teeth between the marks then make them my self??
@moremolecules

@@FIXnMIX.. The marks are extremely useful, but you do not need the marks, counting the teeth is also alright. If I were you I would get more reputable belt with white marks.

If you line up all the holes plus the bottom one, it should be timed. Do not go counterclockwise only clockwise.

Anyone know if flywheel is the same in all Tu5jp4 engines? I changed the engine in my 206 1st gen for one that was in a 307. After that change the engine lost power and sometimes at low speed there is no torque or became confused. I read in a forum someone changed the engine in a Xsara to one from a 307 as well and only after changed flywheel the problems were solved.

If you lock the camshafts with the belt on, but you try to remove auxiliary crankshaft pulley (one that has 3 screws), and if it by mistakes moves (spins), does that mean that the crankshaft moved aswell with it and that the engine is not timed properly anymore (even tho the belt was on - not removed yet)?
@moremolecules
@moremolecules Ай бұрын
How did it spin with the belt on? Unless I have not understood something. The auxiliary pulleys can spin on their own without a problem, but the crankshaft pulley at the bottom is timed with the teeth on the belt. As long as the belt was on, the pulley cannot move on its own without rotating the camshaft ones.
@Genakrul_93
@Genakrul_93 Ай бұрын
@@moremolecules You understood correctly. Thats what I asked, was it possible for something like that to happen? So basically what I did was "released" alternator so that I can remove the auxiliary belt, after I removed that belt, I removed top cover of the timing belt, afterwards I've locked the camshaft, marked it with the marker, afterwards wanted to remove the 3 screws on the auxiliary crankshaft pulley so that I can reach the bottom plastic cover of the timing belt, but when I've tried to unscrew the pulley it spinned, and I've shitted my pants. 😂 So my question was if that outer auxiliary pulley spins, does that mean that the crankshaft spins aswell because if im not mistaken middle screw would move/turn crankshaft? Major mistake was that I didn't know that you need impact pistol for thosse 3 screws, but I've tried with the wrachet and thats how the pulley spinned. ps. forgot to mention it is PSA 1.1 engine so it has only 1 camshaft.
@moremolecules
@moremolecules Ай бұрын
@@Genakrul_93 Not too sure about the 1.1 engine, and the three bolts, as the 1.6 has only the middle and no other bolts. The auxillary do not matter in any case, only the camshaft with relation to the crankshaft one. So, you pinned the camshaft (only one on the 1.1), then removed the belt and then the bottom crankshaft moved? You did not have the crankshaft pinned? Then the timing is off if the crankshaft pulley moved with the belt off. The other auxiliary pulleys do not matter. Maybe I still do not understand which auxiliary pulley moved.
@Genakrul_93
@Genakrul_93 Ай бұрын
@@moremolecules I've tried to link the video, but I asume it's not allowed. The timing belt was still not removed and only the camshaft was locked. And when I wanted to remove the crankshaft pulley for auxillary belt, because behind it is the lower portion of the plastic cover for the timing belt, it spinned couple of times.
@moremolecules
@moremolecules Ай бұрын
@@Genakrul_93 Ahh, that should not be a problem, as the timing belt was still on, unless it has slipped/skipped a few teeth, but you would see that slack in the timing belt. Post the link without the http and it should work.

Is this a reliable petrol engine in your opinion?
@moremolecules
@moremolecules Жыл бұрын
In my opinion, yes. It is pretty solid engine and that is why I bought it myself. It uses a bit more fuel, as it does not really have anything, like a turbo. The engine does not have much stuff in it anyway to go wrong and it does not suffer from headgaskets as compared to the 1.4 engine.
@HardiHolpus

@@moremolecules Thanks! So for C3 1.1 and 1.4 petrol engines are more economical, but less reliable than 1.6 engines.
@moremolecules
@moremolecules Жыл бұрын
@@HardiHolpus Yes, correct. The 1.4 (not too sure about the others) and the 1.3 (Citroen mainly) are economical, but very much prone to headgasket failure, so quite a bit of mixing oil/coolant. Not too difficult to repair, but it comes back again. For this reason there are great bargains to be had in the 1.3-1.4L petrol engines, but one needs to get hands quite a bit dirty.
