GM used the side bar wafer lock for many years claiming it was unpickable Ive done it with pick sets and with other GM keys easily even used an Isuzu key an opened every GM work van on my lot 32 of them its the side bar that was said to make it un pickable

Rocking/raking/jiggling are all valid forms of picking in my book. Good "pick" on that. Oh, and for what it's worth, the us military used late 80's Chevy pickups and blazers as tactical vehicles for a while, called them M1008 and M1009 and they used ignition cylinders like the one you have. They all had the exact same keys for the doors and ignition. I carried a spare set in my pocket all the time when I was in the service in case we had to go "repo" a truck from a unit.

Thanks and thanks for the intestine comment too :-)

Lock Noob ha, intestine. You're welcome.
@NoctisMotus7 жыл бұрын
Certainly a valid attack yet not exactly picking, which i believe is why he said "jiggled" open and not "picked" open. Similarly, bypassing is a valid attack but not strictly picking. All other things being equal, an open is still an open though, of course.

GM/Chevorlet used that keyway and single sided bitting for a few decades ending in 1994 when they switched to a double sided key with the bitting on both sides if the key… at least on the light trucks.
@tonysudano7782 жыл бұрын
It's the old school gm 6 cut. They used em for years on Cadillacs, buicks ect. The door locks have sidebars too.

I was a mechanic back in the 7o's, and I still have a whole ring of try-it keys for GM products. I only ever used them for car doors for lock outs. I just used a slide hammer for ignition locks, and then only for repo work. much faster. Of course, there was nothing vintage about them back then... just another cheap wafer lock.
@LockNoob7 жыл бұрын
Really interesting. Slide hammer is a bit 'final' though, lol :-)
@RAkers-tu1ey7 жыл бұрын
as final as the mighty Ramset, via the LPL.... But one does not want to hang around waiting for the angry person who believes they still own the car they haven't paid for...
@JC-111115 жыл бұрын
My auto tech professor had a keyring full of try-its. It came in handy when I locked my keys in my truck one day, an '01 Chevy. That same exact key that opened my truck also opened 4 other trucks in the parking lot lmao 🤣😆 Yea, he locked that key in his desk after that 👎😆

i just spent like 2 hours trying this in the sun diein with my pick set. yea, my conclusion was the same you need a jiggler set. i raked, nd rocked with every pick i had. it was faster to just pull the steering wheel nd change it out than to pick it lol

A number of modern cars with remote unlocking have an 'emergency key' which turns out to be a slider-only key. One modern car I saw only seems to have 4 sliders in the keyway. Not very good for a lock which is supposed to be securing something which costs many thousands of Pounds, Dollars or Euros.

@@LockNoob Probably a combination of ignorance about security, laziness, and bean-counting, on the part of the product manufacturers, followed by relying upon the customers' ignorance. Many suppliers will tend to go for a tough looking, or stylish, lock which doesn't cost them much.

its not unlockable im honestly tired of people saying that.i make keys for these at work all you do is dril a 2m hole in the side of the casting where then side bar is then poke a small tool though the hole to apply tension to the side bar. then rake apply tension on the sidebar and also turning tension to the plug you will get it open every time.
@LockNoob7 жыл бұрын
Jackcc5 nice technique, but as you admit, you need to damage the lock housing to apply tension, which sort of goes against the lock-picking principals. Good for actual locksmiths though. Then again, as I have demonstrated here, it can easily be jiggled open so clearly I don't believe it's unpick-ble either...
@JC-111115 жыл бұрын
Maybe they should be more specific and say it's unable to be single pin picked without damage to the lock. Better? Geez. Go cry in your safe space. 😆

@Mudsuitable6 жыл бұрын
+Lock Noob just by pushing in the chrome thumb turn piece if that didn't work (depending on condition of the cylinder) an un-bent key ring wrapped on my thumb in the shape of the letter "P" on my left thumb as I used that hand to turn the cylinder picking with my right, I've gotten them open with carved popsicle sticks zip ties coat hangers other keys. my "customers" would usually pay me waaaay more if the car had no obvious damage

Lock Noob if you cut the tip off of a pic and bend it and do a little Half Moon looking thing you shove it into that Groove where the sidebar goes and that's going to be your tension you tension that as you would a tension wrench is very light menu rake both sides and you'll feel that side bar click down and turn with flat head

I think you've lost the plot on this one. Surely lock picking by it's very nature suggests you don't have the original key to compare your picks with?
@LockNoob4 жыл бұрын
Yes. But how long do you think would take in reality to try each jiggler? Not long. I focus on the techniques and tools in this video so showing the key and how the jiggler works is more important that showing me trying each jiggler in turn.
