If you heat up zinc you are sucking fumes. It doesn't even have to smoke, melt or burn. Since you breathe zinc fumes in at a molecular particle size it enters your blood stream. Nothing wrong with that, just a business doing what's necessary to maximize success.
@medes55975 жыл бұрын
While that's a popular thing to say Pyrex has always used Soda Lime glass for their cheap line and Borosilicate Glass for the expensive line. Always. Since the company was founded. Some idiots on the Internet broke some Pyrex, blamed it on "modern soda lime" and now everyone believes it. Its not true. You can still get both types of glass from Pyrex and they've _always_ sold both types since the company was founded. No one noticed this "not heat resistant Soda Lime" until recently and tests done by Time showed that most "old Pyrex" that people swear by and claim is the best ever and better than the modern stuff? Soda Lime.
@Auriam5 жыл бұрын
Every piece of Pyrex from before they sold the name I have seen is the characteristic borosilicate color, clear to slightly yellow. Every piece I've seen after they sold the name is that sickly green color of soda-lime glass. I'd never seen an older piece of Pyrex made of cheap soda lime glass.

I think he chose butane, and a tip which isn't designed for cutting, to demonstrate the weakest part of the lock specifically, but in doing so kind of exaggerated the lock... "oooh look, blue flames and red metal, must be really hot!" you might think... see, the brightest part of the flame isn't anywhere near the lock and isn't the right shape. If he used proper cutting tools and procedures (or heck, railway construction procedures), he'd go through all but his military locks like butter... which says something about this false confidence we have in our locks. @sebastianramadan83936 жыл бұрын
@@joshuasamuels4802 There does appear to be some kind of grease flame on the shackle at the end of the video, but much earlier than that, there are far more energetic flames shooting from the bottom of the lock starting not long after the fumes emerging from all around the lock, like that of a metal flame. My research tells me the flame of a zinc thermite reaction should be bright blue and the smoke should be white, but the parts of the footage that aren't swamped with white light are actually more in line with an iron thermite reaction, making me think a zinc thermite reaction triggered an iron thermite reaction...

Little tip. the hottest part of the torch head is actually where the darkest blue is. Where those mini 3 or 4 blue jets are, about 1cm off of the nosle's tip, those should be just touching the surface you are heating. Although you are directing flame onto the work surface, it is cooler part of it. It is like when you first light an oxy acetylene rose bud torch, when you are adjusting to the correct mixture of oxygen and acetylene, the flame first is very loose and can even stand off of the tip but as your mixture is brought into the hottest mixture possible, you get a very tight pattern of 4 or 5 mini bright blue jets with very little excess acetylene being burnt elsewhere. Basically it is the pattern you are seeing on this torch but everything is very clean and crisp.

The hottest part of the flame is the part at the tip of the light blue cones, that's where the combustion is complete, but no heat has yet been lost to environmental mixing. That means you can put the torch far closer and speed the process right up. Additionally it looked like there was something either partially blocking the gas nozzle in your torch or intermittently obstructing your air inflow ports at the base of the torch body this is causing the torch to flare and reducing the efficiency of the burn.

A proper oxy-fuel cutting torch, even a small one, would have cut through the shackle in about 30 seconds.
@egnaro-hm1bd5 жыл бұрын
@@aevangel1 I think 30 seconds including starting the torch and getting it adjusted lol

an oxy/acetylene torch is like an angle grinder. there is no answer to it. if the thief is using one of those, he's going to get what he wants.
@gabiold4 жыл бұрын
@@thomasjenkins7506 I am not sure. Angle grinder is good for steel alloys, but not that easy to cut soft metals, like aluminium. Or not good for concrete, you have to use diamond cutting wheel for that. Oxy/fuel won't cut through concrete too. Diamond wheels cut steel, but that's not fast. I think a layered steel/concrete/steel/concrete construction would keep someone out long enough. Not necessarily think in padlock only, but as a door panel, for example. If you use waved steel... Good luck replacing the discs at layers... 😉

I use this lock on securing my trailer. I am a little bummed how quickly it was destroyed. Thank you for your information.

At least I can take some comfort in that someone wanted to buy us out. *enters LPL* LPL: This is the Lock Picking Lawyer and today, I'll be purchasing your company. *cue Curb Your Enthusiasm ending theme*

Interesting video, I might buy a couple of those locks to play around with (destructively play around with). I think to melt it quicker you could try wrapping the lock with some insulation that could handle the heat, like ceramic fiber blanket or even a soft fire brick that had a lock-size hole cut in it. Even insulating it a little will make it melt much faster. Another thing to try is hydrochloric acid ("muriatic" acid from hardware store). I use acid to eat away zinc galvanization on parts before I weld and it works great.

The zinc alloy shell around it isn't a security feature, it's something called a "sacrifical anode" and it's designed to corrode first before the hardened steel parts do. These are used on boats and metal structures in contact with the water all the time!
