This seems like a really good book that I might pick up soon. Only disappointment is the lack of info on disc detainer locks since I live in Finland so the better locks available to buy tend to be from Abloy. Not a big issue since it will be a while before I'm ready to look at even the Abloy classic, nevermind the newer locks.
@NigelTolley
@NigelTolley 8 ай бұрын
That was a conscious decision, because there's not a single disc detainer competition (aside from an informal one at LockCon last year)

I have whole books on some of the topics. For example, the factory training manual for Medeco is about as long as this book. Certainly, a book on safe manipulation could be as long as this book or more. As you say, there are more locks to explore like the digital locks for doors and safes. Nice review.

The fundamentals on picking pin tumbler locks is very detailed. Definitely great for beginners. I wish it had more info on high- and ultra high security locks. There are no mention of really challenging type of security driver pins such as barrel pins, gins, shark fin, torpedo and christmas trees 🌲 and how those make picking a lock more difficult. The book just mentions lock mechanisms such as the one found in medeco and mul-t-lock, but doesn't go into details on how to defeat these locks. 😢 So, yeah not much info on anything above lpu green belt locks. Anyways the book is still worth reading. The safe cracking and key impresionning parts were completely new information to me.😅

I am definitely impressed with this book. As is indicated by the title, it has a strong emphasis on LOCKSPORT and even covers the psychology aspects (e.g. being nervous in a competition.) The section on safes is particularly intriguing and even though I am fairly sure I shall never try anything out, I always enjoy increasing my (theoretical) knowledge. Yes, there are thousands of videos on lockpicking on the internet, but it is nice to have a physical book to peruse - it contains many useful brand names and subjects which one can put into a web search. I'm definitely glad I bought a copy.

When this book arrives in mid-May (It's the 22nd of April today) I will edit this comment. I have bought loads of books and learning locks etc, has cost me upwards of £400 (probably a lot more if I actually added it all up) so really hope this book is as good as you said it is @Locknoob. Would hate for it to be anything less after following you for so long now.

I was a bit surprised by the price as well. Is it just a rehash of what's out there with "famous" names attached to it. Can you give an update now that you've had a month with it?
@randommadness1021
@randommadness1021 6 ай бұрын
@grokfro I wouldn't say it's a rehash of what's out there, there's obviously bits that are out there in the book, it is a training book after all. But there's loads of new stuff in there too and had this book been around when I first started picking, I would've saved a fortune. Just having it all, and I mean it ALL in the one book is brilliant. Probably worth the price with everything that's in it.

I don't like reading off a screen, but at that price, I probably should've paid for the kindle version. I would be able to read it now if I went down that route. Pity it isn't available on Audible, I guess you wouldn't get the pictures with it if it was available on Audible. I think the Euro and the British Pound are almost 1:1. You want a Lishi lock pick for doing cars, it needs ti be able ti do your make of car and there is a lot. You won't ever be able to start your car with them though. That's a whole new topic.

@@randommadness1021 You only want a Lishi for MAKING keys, not OBTAINING them from INSIDE the car.
@randommadness1021
@randommadness1021 8 ай бұрын
@ColtonRMagby You can still pick the door locks with Lishi picks if you have the correct pick for your vehicle model. The one I have does a lot of German cars, and I have personally had to use it on my BMW and they 100% work if you know how to use it. If your keys are in the car, the £40 or whatever it costs these days is a lot cheaper than getting a garage to send out their apprentice mechanics who not only take hours but struggle to get your door open if they don't have the skills to open the door of a £30k car.

@ColtonRMagby Agreed. Lishi is overpriced in my opinion. They are a lot better if you actually know how to use them though. Loads of videos make it look like you can open any lock in under 2mins which as I'm sure you are aware, isn't that simple unless you're the LPL.

I find every lock pick book to be really pricy. $75 in Canada. Books on every other topic, $20-$30. I got Deviant's books but used bank points to make it more affordable. If you want to sell more books, make them cheaper.

The ecopy doesn't cost as much. Sadly, small batch book printing (with color pages) is a pricy investment for a publisher. If only there were a million lockpickers that also purchased books, the price per each could have been closer to a mass market paperback.
@NigelTolley

The book was thousands of hours of work, every fact checked many times, with 5 authors, 3+ editors, multiple revisions, releases for every photo (or I drew the CAD figures) and then there's cover art, technical editors and more, before it even gets to print. Honestly, it's a bargain.
