It truly is amazing to look back and see how far you all have come in just nine months. You started out with a rusty, overgrown, dilapidated, and forgotten stretch of track and turned it into a functional line again and now you have a locomotive. This series of videos goes to show what a small but dedicated group of people can accomplish and I hope this channel inspires people to look into the possibility of doing similar things with unused lines in their area. May God bless you and keep you safe and I wish you much success in your adventure with the ETR.

Now THAT was COOL. I was expecting a huge crane. The running gear looks in great shape. That roll off reminded me of when I saw the CXS railroad drive an entire train across a trestle with 2/3 of the ties removed for maintenance. I never dreamed that could be done without the rails breaking, or the engines falling into the drainage canal in New Orleans. The trestle is near the eastern end of Recovery Way in eastern New Orleans. A friend and I used to go there to fire illegal fireworks and rockets I used to make. One day I was walking down the road and saw a racoon and 4 baby racoons following momma in a perfectly straight line, spaces exactly the same distance apart, as they crossed the road. The young ones were almost as large as momma. Too bad there were no smart phones back then. I can remember standing there and thinking ' look at that, you will never see anything like that again'. Great comets are more common than 5 racoons marching in a straight line while being spaced perfectly apart. One night I saw Formosan termites eating the center of the bridge timbers, where the creosote didn't reach. The nice Asian imports will eat the center out of utility poles. That is one tough termite! A spotlight at night reveals scores of alligator eyes in the marsh. Rattlesnakes love the embankments. The experts aren't kidding when they say wetlands contain the most varied life. Buckle up.

@charlessapp18352 жыл бұрын
As to the name, I think the number 2021 is good. However, I think your locomotive needs a proper name as well. You could go with the name of the county that you are in, the town you are in, or you can go with a historical figure. Or you can just go with a simple name that you like. That way your locomotive has a proper name. Just like with Thomas the tank engine. One historical name that would be great is the Samuel B Roberts. The USS Samuel B Roberts was a destroyer escort. (Basically a Great Value Destroyer). On October 25, 1944, the Japanese Navy surprised the US navy off Samar. All that stood between the US landings at Layte Gulf and the Japanese navy was 3 Fletcher class destroyers 4 destroyer escorts, 6 escort carriers, and around 400 planes. The USS Johnston led a charge to let off her torpedoes, firing her 5 5" guns. The biggest ship the Japanese had was the Yamato. Her main battery consisted of 9 18.1" guns! The captain of the Samuel B Roberts said to his crew before they attacked, "This will be a fight against overwhelming odds from which survival cannot be expected. We will do what damage we can." When the battle was over, the Japanese fleet was running, thinking they were fighting the entire US fleet. The USS Johnston was lost, the USS Hoel was lost, the USS Samuel B Roberts was lost, and 2 out of the 6 escort carriers. (One of them to a Kamakazie attack). I think that the Samuel B Roberts would be a great name for a little locomotive. Plus, it would honor the brave men who died for their country. If you want the best book about the Battle off Samar, check out James Hornfischer's book "Last Stand of the Tin Can Sailors."
@beeble20032 жыл бұрын
@@charlessapp1835 There was a strong tradition of naming express passenger locomotives in the UK. Common themes were cities and counties, as you mention. Senior staff on the railway (board members, chief mechanical engineer, etc.) would often have locomotives named after them. Military regiments, navy ships. The British Royal Navy had a lot of ships named after admirable qualities -- _Fearless,_ _Invincible,_ _Indomitable,_ _Courageous,_ _Dauntless,_ etc. Express locomotives were often named after fast things -- race horses, birds (e.g., the famous _Mallard),_ antelopes, etc. -- but that doesn't really suit a switcher. I'd be wary of naming the locomotive after a historical figure, just in case you discover something unpleasant about them. I'd suggest naming it after something small but dependable: perhaps a breed of dog. Actually, _Dependable_ wouldn't be a bad name at all. (Never a warship, but the Royal Navy does have a tug boat of that name.) Or _Independence,_ symbolizing both the founding of the country and the independence of ETR.

Good to see that you finally have an engine. Those were quite reliable, in their day. There should still be some years left in her. Now, just a thought for when you re-paint it. Put a different number on each side, so it looks like you have two of them to the casual observer. I saw this on a security guard car and it made many, even me at first, think that there was more than one security guard on patrol. Fixing the numbering is easy after you have acquired, and are painting the future second engine, but a good laugh until then. I'm very much enjoying watching your show and your work to make a railroad from almost nothing. Please continue. I would donate time if I was closer and not so old and feeble now. You have a good cause to be worth doing. It sure beats pushing money into a backyard toy railroad.
