I've had locs since 1999. At one point they were below my waist. It was not heavy to me. But after my divorce I cut over 24 inches. In the last 10 years I have cut them several times in to a bob or just shorter but not getting rid of them or starting over. Every person has to do what is best for them.

Your last statement is very true. People have had locs hundreds of years before these so called “locologist” and influencers came along and they were just fine. Do what suits you

People who say this usually can’t stand not having a retwist like shawty give your hair a break or be honest with the fact that you yourself may not like locs fr

Tracy Chapman has had her locs for over 3 decades so I would say its based on the persons hair biology. As hair grows and locs are not limited whats limited is our perception of locs.

24 years loc'd; best hairstyle i ever had. at first i planned to keep them shoulder length and i cut them regularly, but the longer it got, the more i liked it. now they're waist length and extremely heavy when wet but otherwise not too bad. my hair is extra fine and dense so i found an undercut is helpful to alleviate the weight. the easiest way to wear it is piled on top of my head in a tornado of locs...it takes 2 minutes. i don't retwist often, but just heard in these internet streets that if your locs have loose hair, the best remedy is a braid out or twist out, so i will test this theory. thank you for your perspective.

I had traditional locs for 2 yrs and they became too heavy and I noticed some thining . I combed them out and went with Sisterlocks. My hair is now thicker, and I don't experience heaviness even when washing my hair. My locs feel light, and I make sure that when I get a retie, it's not too tight.

I’ve been locd 5 years and I love them. I did cut them but it was necessary. To be honest, thinning can happen regardless of the style if it is too tight. Not just locs. And I believe locs can be maintained if taken care of properly and trimmed when necessary. Just like any other style. #loc’d&lovely

I love the style. I have been locs for about 18 months. I love having them. I would see people wearing them and admired them . I didn't know how to get started but, I finally made the leap and it was the best decision ever. I think it is important to do what works for you when it comes to your loc journey.

I’m about to comb mine out and start my journey again using the tips I’ve learned in recent times. Over the 14 years I’ve had locs I have tested their strength!!! Bleach, braids and everything you can think of which caused the condition of my hair to deteriorate. I haven’t seen my loose natural hair in decades so I’m looking forward to that experience despite how short it may be 🙂 of all the things I’ve done to my hair, I really love having locs but I have to take better care of them!

I can see cutting it but why start over? Also people who use products can end up with heavier locs because some products are designed to absorb moisture, so if there is build-up in the locs, it might absorb moisture from the air and end up heavier.

OH NICE , your locs flourished ! I was wondering od you deal with lint buildup / dandruff build up. I have sebderm. I wash frequently but I'm worried that one day I'll all of a sudden see build up. Worse case scenario , would black/ brown dye cover ???? I don't think product build up will be a major issue . Just possibly lint and skin/ dandruff from sebderm flare ups. Had it for 15 years almost but with loose hair.

That loctican had locs and had to cut hers so she is biased. These commercialized locs with the mandatory reties that make you have to manipulate and put tension on your follicals cause thinning. That along with not getting trims when they are too heavy. Avoiding lint. Etc. People can have locs for decades. She wasn’t one of the lucky ones and apparently not her clients aren’t either. Red flag.

Exactly what I was going to ask, can they be cut/trimmed if they get too heavy. 😆 I personally don’t want to change having locs. Loose hair became too much maintenance for me. I’m approaching four years so I guess I’ll have to see. Thanks for the info.

Good Loc talk❣️ I am one of them who always said I would be starting a new Loc Journey after ten years… but now that my locs are where they are at (going on 7), I may start it sooner. I want to platinum bleach blonde my locs AFTER I cut it and cut it into a Bob with this set before I start over though lol. 🤍
