I want to try dressing in mid-century style clothing for a week, a different outfit every day. Just for fun, to see how I like it and whether I can do it using pieces I already own. Enjoy watching!

My name is Lucy, I'm a Dutchwoman here to offer an alternative approach to beauty.
On this channel I do mostly hair tutorials where I show you how to braid, pin and style your own hair. I recreate hairstyles from movies, tv shows or history and I regularly come up with my own, which I love to share with you!
I really enjoy diving into history to find out how women went about their beauty and dressing rituals in days past. Vintage and history-themed videos are my little passion project.
You'll find a bit of lifestyle content here as well, ranging from cozy chats over a cup of tea (my beloved Tea Time videos) to personal vlogs and home & interior videos.
Enjoy browsing!

Rachel Maksy’s channel often shows how to make modern clothing look vintage. It’s been a ton of help to avoid spending too much money. She often wears modern shoes but still makes them work. Her go to color palette seems to be what you like and she just always looks good.

My favorite part about dressing vintage at work, I work in retail, are the reactions from elderly people, mostly women. They always tell me that they wore the same stuff when they were younger and that they are so happy to see someone my age appreciating it..

I've been dressing vintage for 2 years now. I use modern clothing and give it a vintage twist because reproduction clothing can be very expensive. I think you did great! Clothing needs to "spark joy" and if it doesn't, don't wear it. For winter I mainly use skirts with knitted over the knee tights. They are a lifesaver! And I only use ballet flats because 1: they are the most comfortable 2: they go perfect with 40s and 50s and 3: because I just can't do heels anymore! Ouch! Also, wool skirts with a slip underneath are super warm. I couldn't go back to jeans. I was afraid of getting stares when I first started but honestly I get more compliments than anything. This era represents me and I feel pretty and strong. You wear what makes you feel like that! You do you boo! You're great!!😘

Three months in. Vintage-y modern clothes (especially second hand ones) are a budget-saver. I try to dress in style every day now even if it's just curls and cigarette-pants with a modern T-shirt. I even kept it up on my trip to Krakow (although the 12 hour bus ride was not kind to my curls). I was also super warm (two skirts, cotton tights and wollen socks) outside but wouldn't feel hot on the bus (I'd lift the skirt up to my knees and roll the socks down, essentially only keeping one layer-the tights). I also got quite a few compliments, especially 'wow...you have a LOT od will' cathegory when people realize I wake up at 6:30 to do my hair.

I think reusing pieces is fine! When I'm looking for vintage stuff I try to find things that will work with multiple items that I already have! White/off-white blouses that pretty much match any skirt I pair with it, or finding skirts with colours to match the embroidery on my one blouse. It's helpful to have a colour scheme in mind! I have a lot of pastels for spring and summer, then more earthy colours for late summer/fall and early winter. For me, a piece is worth buying if I can match at least two items I already own with it!

Definitely. And they don't have to be bright colors or bold patterns. I liked the burgundy, and the blue of the jeans was a nice break from the earth tones. Some mellow blues and reds would add some variety and "pop" without straying too far from your preference for muted tones. :)

Nice video. The high neck, pencil skirt & straight hair looks very sixties imho. Some tight knits would work and is warm. You could also introduce some pattern like polka dot and houndstooth to mix it up and make it younger looking. You could add a trenchcoat to your wardrobe. That is classic, but also on trend and works with most vintage styles too.

a) LOVE your glasses- a beautiful modern take on a vintage aesthetic, perfect for being able to switch between modern and vintage dressing, and b) "vintage" is as extreme/ stylised as you want it to be - and if you don't want it to be true to a single particular era or style it doesn't have to be. For what it's worth, I thought you looked fantastic- vintage, but subtle, and certainly not anything out of the ordinary for any office I've worked in. Keep going! 😊

🥰 Adore Fran Fine for her highly color coordinated glamour style! That outstanding 90s wardrobe is still a feast for the 👀 eyes. That bold 🖤 black & white🤍 look combined with the 60s fringe & long locks certainly did capture Fran's fashion forward loving spirit, but the skirt was far too long to be a replica. After all, the mini-skirt showcasing lovely legs was The Nanny's signature style. Either that or her spectacularly slinky full length sparkling gowns. 💚 Bridget from Cali☘️ (using my pal's YT acct)

I think the white top with a dark bottom is what's lending the outfits to looks more like a uniform. I feel like even muted tones of colors would help with that! Also, all of these looks so cute on you! You look great in so many different vintage eras! 40's, 50's, and 60's! Major Bridgette Bardot feels from the pencil skirt! The wool knee socks comment is gold, I live in them down here in Tasmania. Also, you can layer petticoats (cotton peasant style skirts are great, or make one out of flannelette!) under a circle skirt to be very warm. Just finish with a nylon or silk petticoat closest to your skin, so it slides nicely over your socks when you walk, without dragging. During this era, ladies wore a chemise or slip under their outfits, also, which is not only warmer, but prevents gaping bosoms on buttoned blouses. The key to looking fresh & young is a tight fitted blouse or turtle neck with a tight wide waist. A wide belt is great, or if you have a wide waistband go for a thin belt. You looked great, though, just have fun exploring your options!

These outfits were so cute and you look wonderful! I wear a lot of retro fashion but also mix in various J-fashions. It might help that people always tell me that I look like a high-schooler, but I don't have a problem with looking like an old-lady. I do use a lot of colours (think soft-summer palette) and patterns though along with ruffles and lace. I go swing dancing and a lot of people in that community wear retro or even vintage fashion, and I will say that colour and patterns help a lot. Vintage clothing oftentimes has a lot of lovely details and patterns. Embroidery, pleats, buttons, and trim can definitely help make an outfit more fun and youthful. Minimalistic, muted colours, and clean cuts give an air of maturity and sophistication, which is what a lot of your outfits were, but you still didn't look like an old lady in my opinion. It makes me so happy that retro fashion is more popular now.

I am new to your channel and really enjoy it! I am in the U.S.A. in Texas. My Mother was all about buying classics that she claimed never went out of style. . . . In the early 1980's My Mother, pulled out of her closet a couple of suits from the late 1940's, for ME to wear, (I just know they were before I was born, 1961) one was hunter green and the other black. Both had short jackets, cinched in just a bit at the waist, flairing slightly out from there and the skirt of one had inverted box pleats at the bottom of the narrow pencil skirt, to allow ease of walking. I was able to wear them in the 80's and no one knew they were 40 years old!

You are a very watchable vlogger - easy to watch, adding that bit of flare and much needed humility to lifestyle vlogging, something that, as you know, can be very self-replicating. But as a non-vlog watcher (for said reasons..and also for being a bit shit at navigating the sea out there) I dig your take. Also I like the fact that you don't 'imperfection' edit. Your editing is real and I love the fact you left in one of your least favourite outfits for example - it show's your process and generally better reflects life. My uniform at the moment is a pastel blouse or dark sweater, dark skirt, tights, loafers, and a roller set. It's pretty conservative but if you have a skirt that's the right cut (for me that's a circle skirt) and enough feminine detailing with your top and accessories, you CAN DEFINITELY make vintage-inspired super young and fresh-looking, without being obnoxious or grandma-y. Though personally, I've accepted that I was just born a grandma and wear what I want.

What a fun experiment. I enjoyed all of your outfits, even if some where a bit out of your comfort zone. I especially love the one with the pencil skirt. If you feel too much like an old lady in a blazer, you might try a cardigan. I've found that knits keep me more within my modern classic comfort zone, while still looking vintage, while blazers and blouses feel a bit fancier and more old fashioned. Not that that's a bad thing, but for every day, I am more likely to go with a knit top and cardigan over a blouse and blazer. I'm not sure what your every day wardrobe looks like, but you said it was mostly neutral colors. Perhaps adding some bright colors in with your vintage looks will help you feel more young and fresh and less conservative. You may also want to give 60's a try, as that decade has a lot of fun colors and shapes.

Sorry for the spam. I live in Chicago and we have very cold snowy winters here. I can still wear my skirts and dresses in the winter with no problems. I do wear a lot of layers even though it never looks like I am wearing layers. For my insides, I wear, underware, a cotton vest, a pair of fleeced lined leggings, knee high socks. Winter boots that go up to my knees, skirts and dresses that go up to or pass the knees, and a slip. A button down sweater or jacket to layer under my coat. Mittens, a hooded hat that I crocheted from a vintage patterned. A coat that goes up to my knees and a scarf that I crocheted. I am always very warm in the winter. Plus if I am wearing a dress that has no selves. I add a long sleeved plain t-shirt underneath (a long with a vest, 3 layers) or a long sleeved button down shirt (also with a vest underneath). For shoes. I bring my shoes with me to work and change out of my winter boots.

Often something like a beret, a brooch, a hairpiece/pin, and (as you mentioned) a belt will beautifully pull an outfit together. I think of vintage style as mostly added touches such as those as well as thoughtful, coordinated colors and flattering cuts for women. BTW you rock vintage fabulously! Really, you looked lovely-my favorite was the second outfit! I think 40's is great for you. 50's/60's too, but they can be a bit "sexier" as they emphasized womens' curves and were more "costumy."

I think the issue you had with the 5th outfit was that the shirt was a bit too baggy to go with that skirt and the skirt wasn’t necessarily high/long enough. For example the 7th outfit was much better. But a lot of it is silhouette, hair and makeup. And I think you could find your own type of vintage style that would fit your comforts. 💙

So interesting to see your little experiment! I’ve always felt best in Edwardian-type styles so started dressing as Edwardian as I possibly can when I began uni. One of the most interesting things I noticed is that most people are pretty okay with the outfits (maybe a weird look or two) but the thing that really pushes it over are the HATS. If I’m just wearing a beret in the winter there’s nothing, but put on a boater hat or large “picture hat”-almost guaranteed a comment! Wild. I’ve also been asked multiple times if I’m religious … which is kind of hilarious because most of the things I wear really don’t conform with any religious garb ideas … I’ll be very interested to see how comments change as I transition into more Edwardian-looking things than just the styling for now.

I thought the third outfit was nice, also kind of BB like! But pencil skirts are a pain, so yeah :P The 'grandma style' problem is so relatable! Most vintage repro pieces are floral or have bright polkadots or something like that, while I also really prefer more muted and darker tones with minimal prints. One of my favourite skirts is knee-length and black, and I always have to remind myself not to combine it with my favourite cardigan, which is a hip-length cream coloured cable knit, because together those pieces make me look like a stereotypical frumpy librarian!

my advice is to try high waited jeans and t-shirts, thats what I tend to wear a lot. I also use saddle shoes, ballet flats, doc martin boots and keds they tend to be cheap and comfy to wear. For hair there are so many lazy cute ways to do your hair. When I had longer hair I used a lot of chiffon scarfs and a lot of hair pins to make it look vintage quickly, and since you have bangs its even faster. As for makeup you don't have to put eyeliner on all the time, I don't, I usually go for mascara and a pink or natural lip and no one notices that my appearance is half assed. a lot of people who first get into the vintage style tend to over complicate it but you can make it lazy. Look up PInupdoll Ashleymarie, Rachael Makey, cherrydollface, miss Miriam these are great vintage youtubers that are super helpful. Hope this helps.

I hear you about being lazy when it come to doing hair and make up. And picking out my clothing. I just want to hurry up and be done. For my clothing to combat with having to pick out what to wear. It no longer takes me a ton of time to get ready. That is why I only have a 3 colors in my wardrobe. I can pick anything and it will go together no matter what, no thinking for me required, woo hoo! I am super lazy with hair but it looks like I spent ages doing it, nope I go for quick and easy and stick with it. I explain all about this in my easy vintage hairstyles series on my channel. As for my make up. I do not even bother with foundation. I go for a bare face. And I do use a tinted bb cream under my eyes to cover up my dark circles. A setting powder on my forehead, under my eyes and nose. Eyebrow powder, liquid eyeliner no wing (to time consuming), flesh colored eyeshadow only on my lids, mascara, and lipstick in red or pink. It takes me about an hour and 15 minutes to get ready in the morning. I shower at night which saves loads of time in the morning. Add in a extra half hour to eat breakfast.

To me these outfits looked more business casual/business formal than vintage. That was my first thought as to why you didn’t end up getting loads of attention when out and about. If I saw you, I’d think you were a businesswoman or that you worked somewhere requiring a professional look (which is most businesses here in Canada!). That may just be a country culture thing or my lack of vintage knowledge 😅

You put them together so well, I honestly think they don't look outdated at all, but at the same time they are definitely vintage.

I really like the conservative look and teacher vibes are my favorite; Its nice to see young women dressing in away the is both attractive and flattering. I think you looked great in them all, and the pencil skirt was nice!

How wonderful! I wear the vintage style almost everyday, and it was so fun to see what outfits you came up with. Yes, people stare and it's annoying, but sometimes people are staring not because they dislike it but they are just curious. As for the time and style problems, I have found the more you practice the quicker you become and the outfits look better. Once you find your look, it can take 15 - 20 mins to put everything together. :) You did a great job, and I'm glad you had fun trying it.

The blazer in outfit 2 was super cute but with that combination the outfit reminded me of the teacher in the movie clueless. I think with a heavy knit or just a long cardigan it would be great but maybe not as vintage

Hi Lucy. I have been binging your videos and just love your channel. I find your style lovely and charming. I love your accent and eloquent way of speaking. Also love your confidence. I’ve always loved period movies and television of days gone by wondering how ladies and gentlemen kept up such formal beautiful dressing makeup and hair!! You bring this to life god me. Also I am half Dutch and just discovered you are too when reading your description. How wonderful. Thanks for all you do. 😍😍😍

I love the last two outfits! I think with vintage skirts it's definitely helpful to wear a tighter top. Vintage skirts were typically long and would show a lot of fabric, so with that burgundy sweater it looked perfect, whereas with the button ups it can seem like there is too much going on. Love seeing videos like this!!

That first outfit blew me away!! You looked so good and I LOVE that Book of Kell's scarf! Now I want one too! I think a different color blazer would work with outfit 2. Maybe a bright modern color would help with the grandma feeling? I gotta get me some paperbag style trousers cause I am loving that look! I also love that you added in a look that steps away from the typical 50's and 40's. They sometimes get forgotten in the vintage community which is a shame cause they are very lovely too. Loved this video & am looking forward to more!

Oooooh I loved this! Clicked this so fast when I saw it. Please do more videos like this! I really like your take on vintage, I feel like I could definitely adopt some of your looks using the pieces I already have in my own wardrobe. Awesome! If you are going to go shopping some time in the future, I wouild definitely recommend investing in a nice pair of sturdy (vegan) brogues in a neutral colour. I have the Dr. Martens ones, and I can pair them with almost anything without being uncomfortable cycling through rain and wind while still maintaining the vintage-y vibe to my look. Keep it up!

In 50-s young people - 15 to 45 years old - were often wearing pastels. If you use neutral palette like black, white, brown, beige - in combination with cuts, typical for the middle of 20-s century, you will unavoidably look conservative and kind of "old lady". Nothing wrong with that, actually, but since you said yourself, that you wanted to look young,- pastels would be your best friend. At the same time, since they are strongly associated with 50-s fashion, they would look even more "costume-like" and hence attract even more attention to you.

I struggle the same way with wanting to dress vintage but not wanting to spend all the time. I get uncomfortable with a lot of the things that I feel make an outfit “vintage”. Like you said the cinched waist, pantyhose, pencil skirts, etc. I also struggle with the line between cute vintage and I look like a frumpy old lady 😂

Have you ever partnered with an online magazine or fashion blog? It seems like you would cross-over with the modern/retro pages really nicely. Overall your channel is so adorable and you have such a nice, cohesive style. Have you considered getting yourself an (international) publicist?

For your warmth problem: I’ve noticed that adding underpinnings can really help, even as simple as a slip/petticoat to a skirt to keep your legs warm! (I wear tank tops under all of my sweaters too)

To change the tone of a vintage outfit I use shoes. If I want to wear something vintage-style but give it a modern edge I'll wear converse with it. I have lace and satin converse that look cute with anything. I also wear slouch boots or knee boots. The clothes may say 1940, but the shoes make me look modern-vintage. A fun handbag, satchel or cute jewellery also helps. If I don't want to look too serious I add a fun bangle or Winnie the Pooh earrings. There's no rulebook on what you should wear, just add things until the pattern clicks in your head and you're happy.

As a woman who wears vintage every single day. You did really well on all of your outfits. Also remember back then especially the 1940s it was the mend and make do era. And why when you look at high school year books from that era you'd see a lot of the same style worn nearly every day. Plus teenagers are the ones (in my experience of watching fashion evolve throughout the 1980s-2000s) do tend to go for trendy clothing. I'd totally wear these outfits myself, minus the pencil skirt, turtle neck, and the jeans. Do to my body shape. I'm smaller on top and from my hips to my knees I am plus size. The last outfit made me think of Audrey Hepburn 👍👍 The only thing I would suggest to make your outfits more young looking is to wear more brighter colors. I'm not talking about anything to bright. I myself only stick to monotone colors in my wardrobe. Such as every shade in the blue family. I do however stay away from teal and orange, its not my cup of tea. Every shade of red and I only recently started adding the color pink and I always go for a bubble gum pink color. I'm 44 years old and have been told I look ten years younger. When I tell people my age they are surprised. One guy would not believe me and I gave him some info only a child who was alive in the 1980s would know about and his eyes went so wide,🤣
