This is exceptionally good. As a former resident and regular visitor I know the city very well. Not only did you do a fine job of covering many of the key points (too bad about Leith...) but you articulated and clarified everything so well. 🙏⭐👍 One thing I always suggest to visitors is that they 'do' the High Street and shopping spots on Princes and George streets, then explore residential areas including the New Town, the Grange, Stockbridge and Bruntsfield (the latter two are villages with great eats and independent shops etc.). All are within walking distance of the Royal Mile. There is also the village of Portobello (take a bus) with its beach promenade (Shirley Manson, singer of band Garbage has a home down here; her family home is just minutes walk from the Scran & Scallie in Stockbridge). Of course there is so much more, which is why you must return. Maybe and Edinburgh and Glasgow (45 mins. by train) video would be a winner. Once again, a fine job.

Hello @MrCherryJuice, Do you have anywhere you can suggest to stay during the very busy time of the Tattoo and the Fringe festival? I am thinking out of town along a train or bus line but not sure if there are some prettier places you may suggest over others? I'm finding, even a year in advance that it is really expensive to stay in the City itself though I wish we could especially as we're going to the Tattoo. We're Celebrating our 40th wedding Anniversary, though we are fit 😁Thank you for any help 🙏
@MrCherryJuice3 ай бұрын
@@Geblues10Thank you for asking. I am shocked to see prices during festival times. Some are ludicrous. The Festival is a worthy attraction, for sure. But it is, in terms of tourist density and inconvenience, the worst time to be there. You didn't suggest what constitutes 'really expensive' nor how many days or what days you would like to be there. So I have arbitrarily searched for 4 days in the middle of August. The place linked here is on Queen Street in the New Town, right in the city centre, though not in the centre of the action. Though Queen Street is a primary route, across the street are private gardens for the full length. And and from this location you can walk down the hill to Dean Village, Stockbridge, the Galleries of Modern Art, the Water of Leith Walkway and the Botanical Gardens...as well as the streets of the fabulous New Town. I LOVE this part of the city. You mention the possibility of staying outside the city centre, though even then some pricing is ridiculous. So let me know if this or something like it fits the bill or not. This is a prime location at a - based on other prices I'm seeing - a ridiculously good rate. Some specifics would be useful for me. It seems this booking site also offers an additional discount if you register with them. NOTE: THESE ARE CANADIAN DOLLARS. www.booking.com/hotel/gb/queen-charlotte-guesthouse.en-gb.html?aid=355028&sid=384517e011d4f30387c005542f6e2c2b&all_sr_blocks=1134466908_386110640_2_0_0;checkin=2025-08-11;checkout=2025-08-15;dest_id=-2595386;dest_type=city;dist=0;group_adults=2;group_children=0;hapos=1;highlighted_blocks=1134466908_386110640_2_0_0;hpos=1;matching_block_id=1134466908_386110640_2_0_0;no_rooms=1;req_adults=2;req_children=0;room1=A%2CA;sb_price_type=total;sr_order=popularity;sr_pri_blocks=1134466908_386110640_2_0_0__153000;srepoch=1726327182;srpvid=4dd96bacefb605a2;type=total;ucfs=1&

@@adriennef6961 It can be very pleasant, but we do have weather. It can change. It can get very damp. So bring waterproofs. As an example, since March this year I have worn heavy boots around Edinburgh perhaps 5 times. The rest of the time I'm out in canvas Vans without socks. As for visitors, the Festival is the batty time but there are lots here a lot of the year; they do tend to stay indoors during the horizontal sleet (which is fine if you are properly dressed. Quite exhilerating, if you like that sort of thing)

Take a bus from city centre to Silverknowes for an amazing sea front walk with great views across to Fife. A really chill way to spend half a day. So relaxing. Do the walk from the west end of Princes St down thru Dean Village and onto Botanical Gardens. On a sunny day it's wonderful. Just got back from Edinburgh two days ago myself. From someone who has never traveled, or even been on a place prior, there were a few things that surprised me. I read / watched a ton of videos on how to survive there as a tourist and one of the biggest things I read about was the lack of public bathrooms. I stayed there a week and never ran into that issue. Almost every store, gas station, pub had them. Some though, require you to make a purchase to use since they're for customers only, but being from the US, that's how it is here, so nothing new to me. Don't worry about having a place to go. If you're wondering if you should rent a car, I highly recommend against it. The parking situation in Edinburgh is an absolute nightmare and I wasn't even there during tourist season. I used the taxi service and Uber to get around to places that were too far to walk and that was just fine. Another thing I read and heard about before going was to try to use a card instead of cash, which made no sense to me. Money is money. They accept cash there, but be prepared to be turned down if it's not coins. At least last week, most stores told me there's a serious coin shortage so they can't make change on bills. One thing I did that wasn't mentioned, was the Edinburgh Zoo. I did that on a whim and was so impressed. The animals were so well taken care of with so much space, and the entire zoo is on a massive hill that overlooks Edinburgh. It was worth every penny. Also, try the haggis. :)

April 28 - May 1! And for your NY weather reference, it was pretty on par with our early spring. I was wearing a light jacket each day. Only one moment with light rain. I thought it was beautiful and really comfortable to walk around in! Probably mid 60s (F°).

Edinburgh weather is quite variable, so anticipate change on any given day, particularly once summer is over. For starters, it tends to be breezy and can be cooler than you might anticipate. This is because it is located on the same latitude as where James Bay meets Hudson's Bay and has the North Atlantic to the west and the North Sea to the right. In short, it is unlikely you will feel too warm unless you are climbing the various stairs of the Old Town (try the News Steps for a workout). I typically wear an undershirt under a long-sleeve t-shirt or light pullover with a high neck. Over that there is a light jacket or hoodie-style pullover. I also always wear a slim Rains brand 'Backpack' (it is named that) - stylish, waterproof and reasonably priced, these are available online or in Edinburgh, in the menswear dept. at Harvey Nichols). In that I carry a compact umbrella and a light rain jacket (also Rains, available per the backpack). Wear comfy shoes as you will not only be doing a lot of walking, but it will at times be on cobbled streets, which can be hard on shoes and feet. Once again, the weather is variable. And because the city is hilly there can be microclimates that differ from area to area. Also, there can be a lot of grey clouds but they don't necessarily mean rain. They tend to blow over. I love them because they add to the drama of the scenery. They also block the sun so one doesn't get too hot walking those steps and hills. Worth noting that Dean Village and the Water of Leith Walkway are only about 10 minutes walk from Princes Street. Dean Village, the Stockbridge (village) area, Glenogle Road and the Royal Botanical Gardens are definite must-dos. If you like art, the Gallery of Modern Art (now named Modern One, with Modern Two across the street) is a good place to start your day (great café). Then get on the Water of Leith Walk at nearby Belford Bridge and head left toward Dean Village. I do hope this isn't too late to be useful for you. Have a wonderful time.

Leith isn't run down. It's just a working class area. Don't disrespect it like that.

Oh & please don't forget, that YOU were a "visitor/tourist" too, so you were just an added extra to that large tourist crowd. No different to anyone else that chose to visit this city & rightfully so!

If you are both referring to my experience at Edinburgh Castle, I am fully aware that I’m a visitor and I had a great time there! As someone who really doesn’t like crowds, I felt - for a paid attraction - they could do a better job at staggering entry times and/or reducing the amount of people they let in at a given time. If I’m paying to see the sights, I’d actually like to see the sights.

Just looked it up! Thanks for the suggestion. :) I’m really curious to explore other areas off the Water of Leith walkway next time I’m there, so this would line up perfectly with that.
