I watched it in real time as it happened and I thought straight away I’d seen a piece of genius. As Arsenal fans we knew what Dennis was capable of, so when this happened there was an element of ‘that’s Dennis that’s what he’s capable of!’ But I think we had to watch it 10’times in slow mo to go woa!!! He instead goes completely counter to expectation: receives the ball with the inside foot, but flicks it back outside where the helping center-back can’t come across to cover, and then turns INSIDE and circles around behind the defender who’s caught flat-footed. Give Bergkamp a shitty pass and he'll doing something unbelievable.. by instinct. A touch which flicks the ball around his marker while he turns the other way and meets the ball in behind, uses his strength to hold off the center back and the next touch he finesses it into the corner against a rushing keeper.. as cool as you like. 10/10 goal in every way. That's what the best players in the world can do with nothing.. make it into something special.

Ive seen Lee Dixon interview somewhere, he was supporting this attack, seen all up close and couldnt figure out what exactly happened before few slow mo reviews after the game. Messi or Maradona skewing defenders from one box to another is one thing, it is amazing, but ive seen 12 year boys doing it in mid school game. Of course Dennis meant it!! You don’t do shit like that by accident, not even Dennis Bergkamp is that good. Every little nuance of his masterpiece was cold, calculated and deliberate. Try his 1998 World Cup goal v Hargentina and ask, deliberate? Of course it was. He was plotting that goal for the previous 100 mins, had spotted their weakness and was just begging for the big ball down that tunnel, when it came and he casually scored, he was like ‘at last! Thank you!’. Bergkamp was the most brilliant reader of a game I ever saw, and I’ve been watching Arsenal for 60 years. Mind you, we got a very promising apprentice called Odegaard currently, and he’s showing all the signs. But yes, everything Dennis Bergkamp did was deliberate! Even the pirouette.

The guy was a legend and a genius. By time he scored that goal to be fair he had lost his pace. Was never fast out the blocks anyway!!! But what he had was pure football brain. He saw it before it happened. And a touch like 'glass' so smooth. Was a pleasure to meet him. I personally own a signed Bergkamp testimonial shirt. Framed from his 2006 v Ajax testimonial.
